Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Angus
Answer: Cattle
Internationally known as just Angus, the fully named Aberdeen Angus breed of cattle is from the Scottish counties of Aberdeen, Banff, Kincardine and Angus. This original breed is either black (the dominant colour) or red, and can have a white udder. It is a popular breed of cattle that has been transplanted around the world, and some common Angus breeds have been developed from the original Scottish stock, including American Angus, Red Angus, and German Angus.
2. Charolais
Answer: Cattle
The Charolais (or Charolaise) is named for the Charolais region of France, around the Charolles commune. It is among the heaviest of breeds, and is raised for beef. Their colouring ranges from white to cream-coloured, and always with pink noses.
3. Holstein
Answer: Cattle
The Holstein, also known by Holstein Fresian, Fresian, or Black and White, originated in the region of Frisia, which straddles the border of the Netherlands (North Holland) and Germany (Schleswig-Holstein). As the fourth name listed above suggests, Holsteins are generally a mix of black and white in patches, although red and white is also possible.
This breed is used for both dairy and beef, depending on the region where it is bred.
4. Limousin
Answer: Cattle
The Limousin breed of cattle hails from the Limousin and Marche regions of France. Originally used as a draught animal, it changed over time to become a beef cattle breed. It is considered a 'blonde' breed, with a bright, wheat-coloured coat. Any blemishes to this colouring render it unacceptable to the breed standard.
5. Hereford
Answer: Both
Hereford cattle hail from Herefordshire and are known for their red coat and white switch and wholly white face. They are used as beef cattle.
Contrastingly, the Hereford hog is an American breed that earned its name due to its colour pattern similarity to its bovine counterparts. The breed was first developed in Missouri in the early 20th century. It is medium in size, has a curly tail and lop ears.
6. Gloucester
Answer: Both
Called both 'Gloucester' and 'Old Gloucester,' this breed of cattle was named for (you guessed it) the Gloucestershire region of the West Country of England. It was originally raised for beef, dairy, AND as a draught animal, but has since dropped in population until it has become considered 'at risk.' It is generally brown with black legs and white finching along the spine, tail and belly.
The swine breed Gloucestershire Old Spots are also known as 'Gloucester,' 'Gloucester Old Spot, 'Gloucestershire Old Spot', or just 'Old Spots.' Also named for the county of Gloucestershire, they are generally white in colour with black spots. It earned the name 'Old' since the breed had been around for so long, that they didn't know when it originated. It is considered the oldest breed of its type in the world.
7. Berkshire
Answer: Swine
Berkshire pigs originate (as you would imagine) from the Berkshire county of England. Its colouring is generally black with white at its extremities (feet, nose, and tip of the tail), and it is of medium size. While it has been exported to different countries around the world, it is now quite rare in the UK.
8. Duroc
Answer: Swine
The Duroc is a medium-to-large American breed of pig was developed in the early 1800s in New England from African stock. It is typically golden to dark reddish-brown in colour.
Interestingly, the name is purported to have come from a racehorse that was itself named for one of Napoleon's generals.
9. Hampshire
Answer: Swine
The Hampshire is an American breed of pig that originated in Kentucky, but took its name from pigs imported from the Hampshire county of the UK. This medium sized pig is recognizable for its colouring, which is black except for a white band around its back and forelimbs.
10. Tamworth
Answer: Swine
The Tamworth breed of pigs is from the UK, believed to have first appeared in the region around Tamworth in Staffordshire. It is the only red breed of pig in the UK, and its origins are not actually known. Theories are that it was introduced from a foreign country, with suggestions of India, Ireland, the West Indies, West Africa, and Barbados as possibilities.
