Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The New Forest pony comes from an area of the same name, but where is this?

Answer: Southern England

The New Forest is in the county of Hampshire on the South Coast of England. The forest is a National Park and the area includes heathland, ancient woodland and sand dune areas.
2. While New Forest ponies come in a wide range of coat colours, the breed register has very strict guidelines in relation to what is acceptable. The society is unusual in that the allowable colours are dependent on the sex of the animal in question. Which of the listed coat colours are allowed for registered mares and geldings but not for stallions?

Answer: Palomino

Palomino (and pale chestnut) males are not allowed to be registered unless they are castrated. The roan gene is not present in the breed at all. Skewbald and piebald ponies occasionally crop up, however the foals are disqualified from the breed registry based on colour alone.
3. There are many ponies that roam the New Forest today - they are quite the tourist attraction! The animals are not feral but owned by individuals making use of a historic right of grazing. According to law all NF ponies must be marked but how is this done?

Answer: Branding and tail trimming

The brand is to show breed registration and ownership details. The tail hair is trimmed each year in a personal pattern to show that the grazing fee has been paid.
4. Every year the ponies are rounded up in a 'drift' for selection and sale. What time of year does this take place?

Answer: August to November

As with other animals it is at this time of year that stock selection is made. The main sales are held at Beaulieu Road. Although the drift only happens annually, individuals may be rounded up throughout the year if veterinary attention or similar is needed.
5. If shown in the UK, New Forest ponies are entered into the Mountain and Moorland class. However which division should they take part in?

Answer: Large Breed class

Currently all M+M classes require that a New Forest pony is judged against other larger native ponies. However the breed registry is campaigning for a rule change that will allow smaller breed individuals to enter the Small Breed class instead. Watch this space!
6. Each year forest-bred ponies take part in a special competition within the bounds of the Forest itself. What is the nature of this challenge?

Answer: Point-to-point racing

The race is run across the forest and thus the rider must depend on his/ her mount's local knowledge of the area. The route taken is changed each year and is not made publically known until a day or so before the race.
7. Are New Forest ponies suitable for adults to ride?

Answer: Yes

Despite their small size the ponies are compact and strong. They are just as suitable for an adult as they are a small child. Many people also break their ponies to harness due to their loose but even stride.
8. The New Forest pony is regarded as one of the most versatile native breeds. What sort of temperament should be expected from the ponies?

Answer: Calm, intelligent

The New Forest is an ideal family pony given its placid temperament without losing spark. They are also quick to learn.
9. Is the New Forest pony a gaited breed?

Answer: No

This breed of pony exhibits the standard walk/ trot/ canter/ gallop pattern. However forest-bred ponies favour an enduring jog for slow movement as the walk is very uneconomical in regards to energy use - a prime concern for a roaming animal.
10. In the UK the Rare Breeds Survival Trust maintains the registry for endangered farm animals. Is the NF pony listed as an endangered breed?

Answer: No

Along with the Shetland and Welsh ponies, the New Forest breed is not on the endangered breeds watchlist as composed yearly by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. While the NF pony isn't endangered, it was placed on the RBST's 'Watchlist' in 2014, as the number of breeding females has declined to under 3,000.
