Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What country did the Thoroughbred originate in?

Answer: England

The Thoroughbred originated in 17th century England. The Thoroughbred is a product of English racing mares and Arabian stallions. Most people are familiar with the three founding stallions, the Godolphin Arabian, the Byerly Turk and the Darly Arabian.
2. The Jockey Club has been the only registry since the beginning of the Thoroughbred in the United States.

Answer: False

The first Thoroughbred registry in America was the General Stud Book. In 1896, the Jockey Club took over the registration. Col. Sanders Bruce heavily researched pedigrees of the American Thoroughbred, and successfully published the first volume of the American Stud Book in 1873.
3. The Thoroughbred can be any color or pattern.

Answer: False

The Thoroughbred can be most colors, but they cannot be Appaloosa (spotted) unless they are crossed with Appaloosa (or any spotted breed.) Thoroughbreds can come in many paint colors, roans, grays and any solid color.
4. The Thoroughbred is known as a race horse, but are they the fastest race breed?

Answer: No

In a short race (a quarter of a mile), the Quarter Horse can beat the Thoroughbred. Other breeds have races that are breed-exclusive, including the Quarter Horse, the Arabian, Paints and Standardbreds.
5. Which of these can the Thoroughbred NOT do?

Answer: It can do all of these

The Thoroughbred can do nearly any sport. It may be most well-known as a race horse, but it can also excel in many different disciplines, from Western riding (trail riding, barrel racing and pole bending), to endurance riding, to three-day eventing.
6. Thoroughbreds are often crossed with other breeds. Which of these does the Thoroughbred contribute to?

Answer: Appendix Quarter Horse

The Thoroughbred is also responsible for the Anglo-Arabian (half Arabian, half Thoroughbred.) There are also many other crosses available, from warmblood crosses, to cold-blooded crosses.

The National Show Horse is a product of the American Saddlebred and Arabian, the Welara of the Welsh Pony and the Arabian and the Morab is a Morgan and Arabian cross.
7. The Thoroughbred is known as a racing horse. Which of these can happen after it retires?

Answer: All of these are possible

Horses that are successful racers may be sent to a breeding farm. However, some may be sent to auction, sometimes sold as meat. One such case is the story of Ferdinand, the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner. He was sold, and ended up in a slaughterhouse in Japan.

There are several organizations that deal in retraining (or selling/placing them to be retrained) ex-racers. One such organization is CANTER (the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses.)
8. Which of these famous Thoroughbreds was never a race horse?

Answer: Show of Heart

Show of Heart is an eventing horse, owned by Apple Knoll Farm. He has several wins to his record. Phar Lap was the famous Australian race horse. Exterminator was the "wonder horse" of the 1930s. Afleet Alex was a Preakness winner.
9. Many breeds allow horses to be registered if the foal was a product of artificial insemination. Is the Thoroughbred one of those?

Answer: No

To register a horse with the Jockey Club, the foal must be the result of a live breeding.
10. There is an albino Thoroughbred.

Answer: False

There is no such thing as an albino horse. There is, however, such thing as a sabino. The white Thoroughbred you've seen is not an albino, it's a extreme sabino. Before you send a correction notice about a white Thoroughbred, such as White Fox, "He is the 16th white non-albino thoroughbred to be registered with The Jockey Club. The White Fox was sired by Overbrook Farm's Pioneering."
