Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chow chow
Answer: Asia
The big and beautiful chow chow dog is famous for its big head, small ears, black tongue, and bushy hairy body. The breed originated in Northern China and many link the breed to Chinese legends told of large black tongued dogs found during the time of Marco Polo.
2. Lhasa apso
Answer: Asia
Probably the easiest match on the quiz. Lhasa is the capital of Tibet so it's fitting that the tiny breed is from Tibet in Asia. The Lhasa apso has been around for over one thousand years and they were used as watchdogs in the Himalayas at Tibetan monasteries.
3. Pug
Answer: Asia
Who can resist the wrinkly short muzzled face of the pug? The breed originated in China and was brought to Europe in the sixteenth century. During the Song dynasty in China, the pug was seen at the imperial court. While the breed originated in Asia, the name "pug" came from Europe.
4. Havanese
Answer: North America
The capital of Cuba is Havana so you should have spotted that the Havanese came from that beautiful island in the Caribbean. The national dog of Cuba is actually called the Havanese Cuban bichon and was crossbred between a blanquito, a now extinct type of bichon, and subsequently with other bichon breeds and possible with the poodle.
5. Labrador retriever
Answer: North America
The Labrador retriever was bred in North America when Canadian St. John's water dogs were bred with British hunting dogs. Labrador is a region in Newfoundland, Canada. In the Western world, Labrador retrievers are consistently one of the most popular breeds of dogs.
6. Chihuahua
Answer: North America
Taco Bell chose the Chihuahua as its 'spokesdog' for a prominent commercial campaign. It's only fitting that the small dog gets its name from a state in Mexico. The first sightings of the dogs dates back to 1520, in which, a letter from the explorer Cortez spoke about small dogs being raised and used as food by the Aztecs.
7. Dalmatian
Answer: Europe
The Dalmatian dog originated in Croatia and has become the dog most associated with fire houses in the United States. The Dalmatian was classified as Croatian by the International Canine Federation and is associated with a region of that name in Croatia. Paintings from the 16th Century by Croatian artists also link the dog to the European country.
8. Border collie
Answer: Europe
The popular herding dog has been classified by many as the world's smartest breed of dog. The Border collie originated in the United Kingdom. The name "collie" is a Celtic word meaning helper and the breed has been linked to the Anglo-Scottish border.
9. Bloodhound
Answer: Europe
Known for their incredible sense of smell, the bloodhound was a popular dog in Europe in the Middle Ages and often used for search and rescue missions. Many of the hound breeds saw their origin in France so this could be where the bloodhound originated.
Others believe that the black hounds sent to France's king by monks at the Saint-Hubert Monastery in Belgium were bloodhounds, meaning that could be the country of origin.
10. Golden retriever
Answer: Europe
The golden retriever was cross-bred between the Tweed water spaniel and the flat-coated retriever in Scotland in an attempt to create the ultimate retriever. Scotsman Sir Dudley Marjoribanks, in the late nineteenth century, is credited with originating this dog breed.
