Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This breed is small, about 10-15 inches (25-38 cm). To be this breed it should be 50% white colored, with black/brown spots in areas. Bred for fox hunting originally, that energy level is very prevalent in the breed today, in addition to its chest size which is narrow to fit in foxholes. Examples in pop culture are Moose who played Eddie Crane, Martin Crane's dog on the television show "Frasier", and Soccer the dog who played Wishbone on PBS. What breed is this?

Answer: Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russells are usually short-coated if well kept. They are not nearly as recognizable with a rough coat. They are full of energy and need space to let that energy out. The breed originated from Father John Russell, who found a small white terrier and began the breed from him, as the dog was very in tune with fox hunting, a favorite pastime of Russell.

Moose the dog gave way to his son Enzo at the end of the show, but Moose had a longer tenure. The dog in the painting called "His Master's Voice" was also thought to be a Jack Russell Terrier.
2. This breed has some size to it - about 2 feet (60 cm). They have heavy coats in the combination of tan and black, although other colorings are evident at times. Generally happy and playful and known for being extremely intelligent, the breed is the most popular dog in police K-9 units. Examples in pop culture are one of the first celebrity dogs, Rin Tin Tin, and the elusive dog on the 1970s Saturday morning program, "Run, Joe, Run". What breed is this?

Answer: German Shepherd (Alsatian)

German Shepherds are very devoted to their owners, and are an ideal breed to train. Evidence shows German Shepherds can be trained to do tasks after only five repetitions of the trick. Often very feared due to footage of K-9 German Shepherds viciously attacking fleeing criminals, their disposition is rarely this if trained properly, and those K-9 dogs are always very friendly and often treated as equals on police forces.
3. This breed is typically sable (medium to dark tan) and white, with hints of black. The coat is heavy, and stays heavy around the neck area. The snout is very long. The breed was bred to herd, but is usually a very friendly breed around even young people. They stand about two feet (60 cm) tall. A line of this breed has played the dog known as Lassie for over two decades starting in the 1940s. What breed is this?

Answer: Rough Collie

The movie and television show "Lassie" and its varieties sparked a surge of Rough Collie pets in the 1960s and 70s. Collies can be vocal, although not very aggressive, which makes them great dogs for farms: a herding dog when they need livestock work, and a living alarm that lets owners know of anything out of the ordinary.
4. This breed, if human, would be perfect for playing Rugby. Breed requirements have them at least 100-110 pounds (45-50 kg), and they seem to be all muscle. They are entirely reddish tan. Their incredibly large heads and faces feature wrinkly skin and droopy jowls. Beasley, the celebrity of this breed, had a marquee role in the movie "Turner and Hooch". What breed is this?

Answer: Dogue de Bordeaux (French Mastiff)

Dogue de Bordeauxs originated in France and are relatively new in the Americas. In fact, prior to "Turner and Hooch" most of the general public had never heard of the breed, and seeing the movie didn't help them identify it. The breed's height runs about 23-27 inches (58-69cm).

While the faces also may be brown or black, the continual redness is most common and desirable. Their coats remain very short and very soft. The large head lends to troubles with breathing issues, and the massively dense bodies are precursors to hip dysplasia, unfortunately.
5. This breed is typically red and white, and VERY large, standing close to three feet (91 cm) in cases and weighing often over 200 pounds (91 kg). While their size often requires some special training for the dog, the general temperament is very subdued and friendly. Examples in pop culture are in the movies "Beethoven" and "Cujo", where both dogs were played by multiple dogs due to the fact that they grow so fast. What breed is this?

Answer: St. Bernard

St. Bernards are one of the most famous breeds due to their size. Often featured in animated films and shorts for their opportunity for comedy, they are rarely shown as aggressive. A key exception is the Stephen King-penned novel and movie "Cujo", where the family St. Bernard contracts rabies and terrorizes the secluded neighborhood.

The media is a reminder to get your pets vaccinated. St. Bernards were bred in the Alps for rescuing victims of the cold and snow, and are named for the St. Bernard passes that they originated in.
6. This breed is most identifiable from the egg shape of its head. The top of its head slopes in an arc-like fashion to its nose, and they also feature triangular-shaped eyes. While no real common colors occur in the breed, white and red are frequently seen. The dog stands about twenty inches (51 cm) tall. One of the breed, named Honey Tree Evil Eye, played Budweiser's mascot Spuds McKenzie in the 1980s, and the singer Rick Springfield owned one and put the dog on his first two album covers. What breed is this?

Answer: Bull Terrier

Rick Springfield's dog Ronnie appeared on his albums "Working Class Dog" and "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet". The Bull Terrier was bred for somewhat sadistic reasons, being used in bloodsports early in its history. Later the breed was bred to have a good disposition, so they would avoid starting a fight, but be very able to finish one. That made them good safety dogs for business owners who liked having a friendly companion that could mix it up when provoked.
7. This breed is known primarily known for being small. VERY small. They average only eight inches (20 cm) in height. The breed have "apple-shaped" or "deer-shaped" heads. One of the oldest breeds, with archaeological evidence dating back to B.C., all colors are accepted in the breed. In the 1990s one breed member named Gidget played the mascot for Taco Bell. Which breed is this?

Answer: Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are the smallest breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. Due to this it's the most common breed featured in celebrities' purses. Gidget the Chihuahua brought the American public catch phrases such as "Yo quiero Taco Bell" and "Drop the Chalupa", and sales spiked considerably during the campaign. Chihuahuas are named for a region in Mexico, and are thought to originate from the Toltecs. Quite often the breed becomes loyal to one person, and can be easily provoked to attack, so small children are not recommended as companions, as the cuteness level of Chihuahuas does not match their temperament.
8. This breed comes in varieties of sandy grey, and is groomed to have a rough wire coat. The breed stands nine to thirteen inches (23-33 cm) tall. They were bred to hunt rats in the Scottish Highlands. The most famous dog of this breed was one named Terry, who acted with Shirley Temple in "Bright Eyes", which led to the Holy Grail of dog roles, Toto in "The Wizard of Oz". Which breed is this?

Answer: Cairn Terrier

Cairn Terriers don't shed much and generally don't experience many health problems, so they are popular indoor pets. The wire coat also repels water so they stay dry during daily walks. Fans of the television show "Mr. Robot" will recognize a Cairn Terrier named Flipper as the main character's companion.

The name comes from the breed chasing prey in the "cairns' of the Scottish Highlands.
9. While this breed comes in various colors, it is its physicality that sets it apart. Standing at 12-16 inches (31-40 cm), they come in at a stocky 40-55 pounds (18-25 kg). The breed has short hair and have a prominent underbite, and they feature a wrinkly face with a large fold (sometimes called a "rope") across the bridge of the nose. An example in pop culture is found on the football fields of the University of Georgia, where a series of the breed, named Uga, have stood as mascot for the home games. What breed is this?

Answer: Bulldog

Whether they be English or American Bulldogs, the appearance is relatively the same. The American standard in weight is about 5-10 pounds (2 to 5 kg) lighter than the English equivalent. British dog clubs are working on improving the health of their breed, recommending more exercise, as they are realizing many are overweight.

The breed has short nasal cavities which means they can't cool themselves off well naturally. This makes the breed susceptible to hyperthermia.
10. This breed is a light tan with a black face. The face is the noticeable feature, being very wrinkly and seemingly pressed in. They are small, high-energy dogs, ranging in height from 10-14 inches (25-36 cm). They also are susceptible to breathing problems due to the smashed in quality of their face. Prominent appearances in pop culture are when Mushu played Frank in the Men in Black series of movies, and a few of the breed played Otis in "The Adventures of Milo and Otis". What breed is this?

Answer: Pug

Pugs have a lot of energy and are rarely aggressive, which makes them good children's pets. They also have sturdy bodies so the occasional grabby toddler is tolerated well. They do have higher rates than normal of encephalitis, and spinal cord issues, due to their differently shaped heads and vertebrae.
