1. Worm snake

The snake does resemble a worm, lives underground and very rarely makes an appearance. It feeds on earthworms, spiders, slugs and snails.
2. Dwarf snake

The dwarf snake is a small, thin and harmless snake which likes to hide under rocks during the day. It feeds mostly on insects and lizards.
3. Dahl's whip snake

Also known as the slender whip snake, it is not venomous and likes dry land surroundings. Dahl's whip snake eats insects, lizards, small birds and mammals.
4. Coin-marked snake

It is called the coin-marked snake because of the markings on its back that resemble coins. It is not venomous, but if provoked it will bite and its bite is rather painful. It feeds on rodents and insects.
5. Cyprus grass snake

Endemic to the island, this grass snake likes wet areas and is normally found near streams and dams. It is very rare and is a protected species. It feeds on frogs and fish.
6. Cyprus whip snake

A very rare snake that is native to Cyprus and it is totally harmless. It prefers wet and shady surroundings and feeds on lizards, frogs, insects and other snakes. It is very good at climbing walls.
7. European cat snake

This is a venomous snake, but doesn't pose any danger to humans because its fangs are located at the rear end of the jaw. It feeds mainly on lizards and other snakes.
8. Montpellier snake

This snake is venomous but not very dangerous to humans. It likes to live in places where there is a concentration of the lizards on which it feeds. It also eats other snakes and rodents.
9. Cyprian blunt-nosed viper

This member of the viper family is highly venomous and a real danger to humans. It feeds mainly on other snakes and rodents and likes stony hillsides with shrubs to hide in.
10. Black whip snake

The black whip snake is not venomous and can be found all over the island. They are a very welcome sight to farmers because they mainly feed on rodents, They also consume small snakes, birds and insects. It is known locally as "therkon", meaning the beast.
