Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Underwater equipment; Old calculating apparatus

Answer: Scuba Abacus

Scuba, aqualung or Aqua-Lung is a device that allows divers to breathe under water. Scuba is an acronym for 'self-contained underwater breathing apparatus'. To learn more about the development of this device, it is interesting to read something about Captain Yves Le Prieur (1885-1963) and Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1910-1997).

An abacus is an old counting device, used to make manual arithmetical calculation; it consists of two vertical stems, which hold several parallel rods, on which are movable beads. Each rod has a different denomination like units, tens, etc.
2. Translation of a text from another language; Intense dislike

Answer: Version Aversion

The word version has several meanings, one of them being the translation of a work from one language to another. For example, there are numerous versions of the Bible, one of the most famous being the King James Version. Also, when different observers of a fact describe it differently, we say that there are several versions of the same fact. Version is also a variant of something, for example: an updated version of a computer program.

An intense dislike, antipathy, repugnance, distaste, repulsion for one situation, person, or fact is named aversion. The noun comes from the Latin averting, from avertere "to turn away". As early as the 1650s this word appears in the figurative sense of "mental attitude of repugnance or opposition".
3. An iron alloy; Any of several plants of the genus Dipsacus

Answer: Steel Teasel

Steel is a modified form of iron; it is a strong, malleable, hard substance consisting of an alloy of iron and carbon, and other elements such as copper, manganese, cobalt, and nickel in amounts that depend on the desired properties. This mixture of iron with carbon and other elements aims to increase its strength and fracture resistance.

A teasel is a plant of the genus Dipsacus, represented by 15 species in the honeysuckle family; they are tall plants with prickly leaves and flower heads. Also, a teasel is a device used to produce napped surfaces on cloth.
4. The interpretation of written language; A plant of great beauty and perfume

Answer: Reading Gardenia

Reading is the process of looking at written symbols and understanding their meaning. Reading can be silent or aloud; when we read silently we receive information; when we read aloud to other people, we not only learn but also transmit information. History tells us that Charles Dickens, besides being an excellent author, often promoted reading sessions of his own works.

A gardenia is an exotic flower, originating in Asia, especially in China. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family, with the scientific name Gardenia jasminoides. It is a shrub with glossy dark green leaves and its flowers, mostly white, are waxy and fragrant. Gardenias are flowers that symbolize kindness and purity and are associated with the power of attraction and positive energy.
5. Confection made of nuts; Vehicle that is capable of flight

Answer: Praline Airplane

Praline is a confection of nuts with caramelized sugar. Almonds, hazelnuts, and pecans are stirred in boiling sugar syrup until turning brown and crisp. The powder made by grinding up the caramel-coated nuts is called praline and is used in other confections. The French and American pralines are slightly different.

"Airplane" is the name given to heavier-than-air winged vehicles, driven by propellers or jet engines, that are able to fly. Man has always dreamed of flying. Leonardo da Vinci elaborated studies that resulted in the "Ornithopter", the flying machine that showed that man could fly, but his machine was never built in his lifetime.
6. Animal that has feathers and most of them can fly; Plait

Answer: Bird Braid

Birds, which belong to the Aves class, have feathers as their main characteristic; they are vertebrates and warm-blooded, their forelimbs are modified into wings, they lay eggs, and have keen vision. Birds have always aroused man's interest and many real or imaginary powers have been attributed to them. The Bible says that Noah used the raven and the dove to bring him information about the Flood.

A braid or plait is a hair-do or hairstyle made by weaving three sections together. A braid is also a piece of ribbon or cord composed of three or more strands woven together. Braiding in many parts of the world is a social art; while braiding, people socialize.
7. Metric unit of capacity; To sell in small quantities to consumers

Answer: Liter Retail

Liter, also called litre (abbr. l, L, or lit) is a measure of volume in the metric system. A liter is equal to a cubic decimeter, equivalent to 1.76 British pints or 2.11 American pints.

"Retail" is the sale, by individuals or companies, of goods and services in small quantities, directly to customers for their own use. It differs from wholesaling which is the sale of goods, in large quantities, to business or institutional customers.
8. The first pope; Say another time

Answer: Peter Repeat

Saint Peter, one of Jesus's original apostles, was the first pope of the Catholic Church. His original name was Simeon or Simon, but Jesus Christ named him "Cephas", from Aramaic Kepa (rock). Petros is the Greek translation of Kepa.

To repeat is synonymous to iterate, reiterate, and restate; it means to do something again, to say something again, or to occur or happen again. Sometimes when we don't understand a question we say: "Could you repeat the question, please?"
9. An arachnid; Absorbent material used by babies

Answer: Spider Diapers

Spider (order Araneae or Araneida) is one of the numerous arachnid species; they differ from insects because their bodies are made up of two parts (instead of three) and have eight legs (instead of six for insects). Their rounded unsegmented body consists of the abdomen, where silk-secreting spinnerets are located, and a cephalothorax bearing eight legs.

A diaper (diapers) or nappy (nappies) is made of absorbent material, placed between babies' legs, and fastened at the waist, to contain excretions. Diapers can be reusable or disposable depending on the material they are made from. It should be noted that diapers are also widely used by adults, especially the elderly, who suffer from incontinence, which occurs with a significant percentage of the adult population.
10. Substance used to cure a disease or condition; Member of the group of Swiss men protecting the Pope

Answer: Drug Guard

A drug is any chemical substance, natural, synthetic, or semi-synthetic, used in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of diseases. Drugs have both beneficial and harmful effects and their use implies an analysis of risks and benefits. The use of drugs as medicine is regulated by laws and their sale can be done with a doctor's prescription or over the counter.

The Pope and the Apostolic Palace are protected by the Swiss Guard, with origins dating back to the 15th century. The guard is made up of armed Swiss Catholic men, trained with the Swiss Armed Forces. They are equipped with both traditional weapons such as the halberd and modern firearms and have to swear an oath of service.
