Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What word comes after 'glue', but before 'bug' and 'in the mud'?

Answer: Stick

Though adhesives aren't a new invention, the first glue sticks-- push-up tubes containing a solid adhesive substance-- were made in 1969.

Stick bugs, meanwhile, fall into the animal order Phasmatodea and are common insects, evolved into a form that allows them to blend in with their natural surroundings and avoid predators. They're found on nearly every continent.

Being a 'stick in the mud' is an old saying referring to someone who'd prefer to be obstinate and vocally averse to change.
2. What word comes after 'foot', but before 'ladder' and 'sister'?

Answer: Step

All basic compound words on this one! A footstep is a pace made while walking, and visually, it's often depicted by the print left behind by a shoe or boot. A stepladder is a device used to climb a low height, often constructed on an angle so as to emulate a small staircase.

A stepsister, meanwhile, is a sibling you're related to through marriage, but not biology; they're the daughter of your stepmother or stepfather.
3. What word comes after 'center' and 'battle', but before 'mouse'?

Answer: Field

A field is an open expanse of space, so in the case of all three of these created words, you're looking at the area. Someone who is at centerfield is in the middle of said space, and this is a term that's used in sports quite a bit as it applies to games like baseball. A battlefield is a site where a great fight has occurred (during war, for instance).

A field mouse is a small rodent found around the world, normally making its home in a small burrow or nest in fields. In North America, they'd be referred to as voles.
4. What word comes before 'M.D.', but after 'Animal' and 'Terrace'?

Answer: House

All three options here are pop culture focused!

"Animal House" is a 1978 John Landis comedy about a college fraternity. Starring John Belushi, it would become a bit of an American classic over time.

"House, M.D.", meanwhile, is a TV show from the 2000s-2010s starring Hugh Laurie. Across nine seasons, it followed a problematic diagnostician at the top of his field solving medical mysteries out of Princeton-Plainsboro Hospital.

"Terrace House" is another show. Filmed in Japan, it followed groups of Japanese strangers who would become housemates for the duration, living together in a "Real World" style reality production. It aired on Fuji Television starting in 2012 and moved to Netflix shortly after, airing until 2020.
5. What word comes after 'nest', but before 'plant' and 'heads'?

Answer: Egg

A nest egg refers to money or resources squirrelled away for a future event or purchase. The phrase derives from the way that birds and other animals take care of their own eggs, keeping them safe and stowed away until they hatch.

Eggplants, meanwhile, are also known as aubergines. An edible nightshade, it's harvested in a distinctive purple colour and commonly found in various Asian cuisines.

"Eggheads" is a British quiz show in which participants face off against trivia masters for cash. It premiered in late 2003.
6. What word comes after 'card' and 'surf', but before 'walk'?

Answer: Board

Cardboard is a paper-based item made of either a thick stock or a corrugated stock designed to hold its shape and withstand damage. Generally, it's quite easy to recycle in the way of packaging options.

A surfboard, on the other hand, is an item used by athletes and enthusiasts allowing them to ride out into ocean waves, stand, and ride along the surf.

Thirdly, Boardwalk is the final square you can visit on a Monopoly board. It references the actual Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, an oceanside tourist spot.
7. What word comes before 'wood', but after 'book' and 'Earth'?

Answer: Worm

Wormwood, or artemisia absinthium is a strong-smelling plant that creates a bitter oil. Notably, wormwood is a key ingredient in absinthe.

Worm also follows 'book' to create bookworm, a word that refers to someone who is an avid reader. Unfortunately, it refers to a real insect larvae which can eat its way through the pages of old books.

It wouldn't be too dissimilar to an earthworm, a long, tubular invertebrate that crawls through and eats dirt.
8. What word comes before 'Game', but after 'screen' and 'pen'?

Answer: Name

You're likely using a screen name right now-- it refers to an account name used for an online service or the name you choose for yourself to maintain semi-anonymity on a website or video game.

Similarly, a pen name is given to authors who choose to go by a pseudonym when writing a published work.

"The Name Game", however, is a song popularized by Shirley Ellis in the mid-1960s. The song takes a common name and gives it new starting letters to create its rhyme scheme throughout. Because of its relative simplicity, it's evolved to be a popular kids song.
9. What word comes after 'night', but before 'house' and 'sandwich'?

Answer: Club

A nightclub is a facility where patrons can go for a night of music, drinks and dancing if they so choose; it'll typically operate after sundown and the party won't stop until late. A clubhouse would be another facility-- a meeting space for a designated group.

A club sandwich might be served in a club. Allegedly first made at the Union Club in New York City, it's a sandwich made with toasted bread and filled with layers of sliced chicken or turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo (or a variation of similar).
10. What word comes after 'food', but before 'reaction' and 'mail'?

Answer: Chain

The food chain is the operation through which creatures of the world eat one another to survive with predators at the top leading to their prey or non-living meals of choice. The animals further up the food chain are the apex predators.

A chain reaction occurs when events cascade, one after the other, due to an initial event. The chain in this case refers to the linked occurrences. Similarly, chain mail involves links intertwined together to form a strong, armored barrier; it was often worn by knights.
