Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Take an occurrence - add the 21st letter of the alphabet - and finish with a friend. This will give you another word for ultimately.

Answer: Eventually

Solution: An occurrence is an "event"; the 21st letter of the alphabet is "U"; and a friend is an "ally" - giving you the answer "Eventually". The meaning of this word is to describe some occasion, or anything or anyone due to arrive, which is bound to happen sooner or later, in its own good time, or when it's ready. You could bear in mind the saying that "A watched pot never boils" for this to take place, but be assured, it will - eventually.
2. Take a preposition - add an outdoors shelter - finish with a charged particle. You will have a purpose or goal.

Answer: Intention

Solution: The preposition you need is "in"; an outdoors shelter is a "tent"; and a charged particle is an "ion" - giving you, altogether, the word "Intention". An intention describes a plan, or an objective, or a goal, good or bad, to reach some time in the future, or that has been achieved in a previous time. With some people, however, that objective may never be achieved.

The proverb, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" could apply in some cases here. Did you know that, medically speaking, "intention" once described the healing of a wound?
3. Take the chemical symbol for rhenium - add anything comprised of severe rules - finish with Wilbur Post's horse. The result will be only available to certain individuals.

Answer: Restricted

Solution: The chemical symbol for rhenium is "Re"; Anything comprised of severe rules is described as "strict"; and TV's Wilbur Post's horse is "Ed" - giving you, altogether "Restricted". If anything has been restricted, it's been closed off to all but the authorities or anyone with approval to proceed. An army base, for example, is restricted to all but army personnel, unless specific steps have been approved and followed.

The original meaning of this word comes from the Old French, when it meant "confined or bound".
4. Take the opposite of out - add the face of a cube - finish with the 18th letter of the alphabet. The answer will be someone with special knowledge of any organisation.

Answer: Insider

Solution: The opposite of out is "in"; the face of a cube is a "side"; and the 18th letter of the alphabet is "r"; giving you, when added together, the word "Insider". An insider is anyone in any group or organisation with special information about same, that is not available to the general public.

This word originally applied to the Stock Market, but its meaning has since expanded to include various other organisations.
5. Take a pointer on a clock face - add a judicial legal document - add the longhand equivalent of the Roman numeral X. You will end up with something inscribed manually.

Answer: Handwritten

Solution: The pointer on a clock face is a "hand"; a judicial legal document is a "writ"; and the longhand equivalent of the Roman numeral X is "ten"; altogether giving you the word "Handwritten". Anything that has been handwritten is that which has been inscribed by someone using a pen or a pencil, a crayon or chalk or any other writing implement. Humans, it is believed, started out by drawing on the walls of caves, then moving to creating symbols (letters) to represent various sounds, which when added together, created meaningful words which were inscribed on paper - and on and one we progressed.
6. Take the country code for India - add an objective feminine pronoun - finish with a third person neuter pronoun. This is to take possession of something as your right.

Answer: Inherit

Solution: The counry code for India is "In"; an objective feminine pronoun is "her"; and "it" is a third person neuter pronoun, altogether equalling the word "Inherit". If you've inherited something valuable, you're in luck - but then again, Aunty Clara could have willed you her collection of 18th century dentures - then you're not. Inherit is an old Middle English word, derived from the French, meaning "to receive as a right". Heir itself is an old French word meaning "successor".

Usually that would mean the eldest child in a family, particularly if a boy (girls weren't that fortunate for many centuries past), but of course that isn't always the case, as a disgruntled parent could choose to "disinherit" his expected successor. An example of an heir in our modern age is the UK's Prince William. He is the heir to the English throne, and his son, in due course, is expected to be his heir.
7. Take everyone - add the first person singular - finish with scrambled acne. This will give you a union of interests between organisations or countries.

Answer: Alliance

Solution: Another word for everyone is "all"; the first person singular is "I"; and scrambled acne ends up as "ance" - giving you the answer "Alliance". An alliance is some type of union or agreement between people, or organisations, or countries for the mutual benefit and/or protection of all concerned. If you're a fan of "Star Trek", for example, the United Federation of Planets could be considered a mighty alliance of various planets under the one umbrella of justice, protection, and equality for the worlds who are members within the Federation - a type of futuristic idealistic League of Nations.
8. Take an abbreviated college brotherhood - add a hospital's accident section - finish with a goddess in Norse mythology. The answer will be related through a brother.

Answer: Fraternal

Solution: An abbreviated college (fraternity) is a "frat"; a hospital's accident and emergency section is known as an "ER"; and "Nal" is a goddess in Norse mythology - altogether providing you with the answer "fraternal". That word can refer to a male sibling in a family, or any organisation (Fraternity) of men for the purposes of friendship, brotherhood and the development of mutual goals.
9. Take the internet TLD for Tonga - add a verb meaning to obtain or acquire - and finish with the possessive form of the pronoun she. The answer will be everyone gathered at the same time and place.

Answer: Together

Solution: The TLD for Tonga is "to"; "get" is a verb meaning to obtain or acquire; and the possessive form of "she" is "her" - all up with the meaning "together". Together is derived from the Old English and West Germanic word "gather". A meeting place is an example of where everyone could be gathered together, either for business or enjoyment, in the one area.
10. Take a reference to something - add an amount of paper - and finish with the 4th letter of the English alphabet. This will give you something that is needed.

Answer: Required

Solution: The word "re" is a short term indication used when referring to anything under discussion; a "quire" is an amount of paper comprising 25 sheets of the same size usually for typing or photocopying or scanning; and "d" is the 4th letter of the English alphabet - altogether giving you the word "required". If any object or goal is required, it is needed or wanted to achieve a particular goal or purpose. Required is derived from the old Latin word "requirere" with the meaning oft "to seek".
