Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After many years as a child actor, followed by movie bit parts, Ryan Gosling earned his first major role in "Murder By Numbers" (2002), where he received third billing behind Ben Chaplin and an actress so big at the time she did not need a major male lead to help her carry this movie. Who was this actress?

Answer: Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock needs no introduction. From her breakthrough role in "Speed" (1994) to winning a Best Actress Oscar for her role as Leigh Anne Tuohy in "The Blind Side" (2009), Ms Bullock has been the critics' darling and the the public's poster girl. In 2014 she received another Oscar nomination for Best Actress in "Gravity" (2013). Her character in that movie was called Ryan.
The other options in this question were Oscar nominees for Best Actress in the same year as Ms Bullock won (2009).
2. Ryan Gosling's second movie as male lead (his first was in 2003's "The United States of Leland") was playing opposite Rachel McAdams in "The Notebook" (2004), an adaptation of Nicolas Sparks' novel of the same name. What is unusual about the two leads in this movie?

Answer: Both were born in London, Ontario.

Both Mr Gosling and Ms Adams were born in London Ontario, with Ms McAdams being almost exactly two years older (12 November 1978) than Mr Gosling (17 November 1980) making these two Canadian citizens 26 and 24 respectively when "The Notebook" was released. Prior to this movie, Ms McAdams had a lead role in "Mean Girls" (2002) where it could be argued that Ms Adams was cast against type.
3. In "Fracture" (2007), Gosling starred in a legal thriller with Anthony Hopkins. Gosling was a lawyer whose love interest was his future boss. This actress' breakthrough role was as Miranda Frost in "Die Another Day" (2002). Since then she has had several starring roles including "Pride and Prejudice" (2005), "An Education" (2009) "Made in Dagenham", (2010), "Barney's Way" (2010) and as another lawyer in "Jack Reacher" (2012). Who was she?

Answer: Rosamund Pike

Ms Pike is a British national and was born in London on 28 January 1979, England to two opera singers. She is an only child. If you would like to hear what Ms Pike's normal clipped British accent sounds like, see her role as Lisa in the UK production "Made in Dagenham" (2010).
In "Fracture", while Ms Pike's character as Mr Gosling's character's love interest is a crucial part of the plot, the DVD version of the movie emphasised the relationship with extra, more "energetic" scenes.
There was a chance that Ms Pike and MR Gosling may have worked together again in 2012 when Mr Gosling's name was considered for the title role of "Jack Reacher" (along with (Jamie Foxx, Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Vince Vaughn) before the role was given to Tom Cruise).
All the other answer options are exceptional Australian actresses who did not get an opportunity to work with Mr Gosling over the 2002-2014 period that covers this quiz.
4. "Lars and the Real Girl" (2007) was a quirky movie about a very shy young man named Lars, played by Gosling. Who played the "Real Girl" of the title?

Answer: Nobody, the "Real Girl" was an inflatable doll

The concept that a man could fall in love with a life size doll (her name was Bianca) that had, in time, the acceptance of his entire community sounds incredulous, but Gosling pulled it off.
The other three real actresses in the answer options all play parts in this movie with Kelli Garner, being the hopeful contender for Lars' affection once his relationship with Bianca had run its course.
5. In the multi-award winning "Blue Valentine" (2010), Gosling and his co-star explore the difficulties in maintaining a marriage when there are external forces acting. Up until this point, Gosling's co-star was best known as the (Best Supporting Actress' nominee) partner of Heath Ledger's character in "Brokeback Mountain" (2005). She was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in "Blue Valentine". Who was she?

Answer: Michelle Williams

Both Ms Williams and Mr Gosling appeared in 2003's "The United States of Leland" but did not share scenes. "Blue Valentine" was a heart-breaking film about the slow breakdown of a relationship and was notable for, apart from some excellent acting from the two leads, Mr Gosling singing a song he wrote himself.

The movie was shot in scene order to amplify the eventual break-up. The other actresses who were answer options were all nominees for the Best Actress Oscar in the year that Ms Williams was nominated with Ms Portman winning the Oscar for "Black Swan" (2010).
6. In 2011, in "Crazy, Stupid Love", Gosling does comedy. He plays a likable womanising rogue who tries to teach Steve Carell's character, (newly separated from Julianne Moore's character), how to pick up women in bars. Gosling's Jacob eventually falls for Hannah, played by whom?

Answer: Emma Stone

It must be hard acting in the same comedy movie as Steve Carell, but Mr Gosling is an accomplished comedic actor, and in "Crazy, Stupid Love" he held his own against comedian Mr Carell. The twist, is if there is such a thing in a comedy, is that the woman Mr Gosling has been chasing throughout the movie, played by Ms Stone, turns out to be Steve Carell's character's older daughter.
The other answer options are all actresses who have played opposite Mr Carell.
7. "Drive" (2011) was adapted from the 2005 novel of the same name by James Sallis. In the novel the love interest of Gosling's unnamed character was hispanic. This had to be changed to accommodate the director's first and only choice to play this role. Who was she?

Answer: Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan, a quintessential British actress, came to international attention as she played a middle-class English schoolgirl in "An Education" (2009), a role which allowed her to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. In the "Drive" role she proved her versatility by playing a poor American single mother.
The other female actresses mentioned as options have all played in the same movies as Ms Mulligan: Ms Hendricks played in a small role in "Drive"; Ms Pike (that name again) also had a role in "An Education" and Kiera Knightley was in 2010's eerie "Never Let Me Go".
In "Drive" (2011) Mr Gosling was allowed to pick the director. He chose Nicolas Refn. The director then cast Ms Mulligan as Irene even though he had not seen "An Education".
8. "The Ides of March" (2011) might have starred George Clooney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman but Gosling stole the show. The actress who was sixth billed is better known for her Oscar winning role in "My Cousin Vinny" (1992). Who was she?

Answer: Marisa Tomei

Marisa Tomei surprised everyone when she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "My Cousin Vinny" (1992). However she backed that up in 2001 when she was again nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "In The Bedroom" (2001) (Sissy Spacek won the Best Actress Oscar for the same movie) but Jennifer Connelly won Best Supporting Actress for "A Beautiful Mind" (2001). Tomei wasn't nominated for "Drive" in 2011.

Her character, Ida, may have flirted with Gosling's character, Steve, but there was no romantic connection between them in the movie. With such big names in "The Ides of March", it is not unexpected to find that Gosling's romantic interest (who played a major role in the twist in the plot) was Evan Rachel Wood who was billed as a low fifth behind Clooney, Seymour, and Paul Giamatta.
9. Gosling's character, Luke, is a motor-cycle stunt-rider in a travelling fair in "The Place Beyond the Pines" (2013). He catches up with an old girlfriend and is surprised to find out he is a father. Which actress, of Cuban-American heritage, plays Romina, the mother of his child?

Answer: Eva Mendes

Ms Mendes plays an emotive but underplayed role in "The Place Beyond the Pines" (2013) where she is caught between two men. Ironically, in Ms Mendes' previous best known work, 2007's "We Own the Night", she also chooses a partner (Joachim Phoenix) who is on the wrong side of the law. Ms Mendes is also a singer, model and a media spokesperson for many products.
10. In "The Gangster Squad" (2013), an over the top film-noir, Gosling plays a cop trying to win the affection of the female lead character, Grace, played by an actress who has already starred with Gosling in a previous movie. Which actress plays Grace?

Answer: Emma Stone

Emma Sone and Ryan Gosling had such good screen chemistry together in 2011's "Crazy, Stupid Love", that it is no wonder, they were cast together in this periodic, gangster film-noir that seemed at times to parody the genre. The movie got mixed reviews though there was consensus that Ms Stone's and Mr Gosling's screen presence was a feature of the movie.
The other actresses were all co-stars of Mr Gosling and indeed were answers to three of the other questions in this quiz.
