Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In high school Matt Groening was the student body president, but lost this title when he did what?

Answer: Tried to amend the school constitution to make himself dictator for life.

Groening was certainly a non-conformist. When he became a First Class Boy Scout, he refused to cut his hair. Matt did actually redact the Bible once, but it wasn't the school's copy nor was it related to the incident in the question. (It was actually one of the Gideon Bibles he stole from a motel room; he said he thought it was free.) This combined with the hair got him kicked out of Scouts too. All in all, it's a good thing he turned out the way he did, or we might not have "The Simpsons" and "Futurama"!
2. Seth MacFarlane narrowly escaped death one fateful morning when he did what?

Answer: Missed his plane, which was one of the four used in the attacks of September 11.

According to Seth in an interview, he thought the flight was scheduled to leave 30 minutes later than it actually was. That, combined with being hungover, caused him to miss his flight by only one minute. According to Seth, he was not traumatized by the event in any way, instead joking that this event proved that alcohol saved lives.
3. Which of the four animation gods has a bachelor's degree in mathematics?

Answer: Matt Stone

Yes, we math majors have sleeper agents everywhere. One minute they're entertaining you with a poop joke, and the next minute they've blown you away with a startling corollary of the Taniyama-Shimura Conjecture. Matt Stone graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder having completed a double major in Mathematics and Film.

Disclaimer: Matt Stone was not actually the person who proved that Fermat's Last Theorem followed from the Taniyama-Shimura Conjecture.

** Don't worry about it if you have no idea what I'm talking about.
4. Matt Groening was the original creator of a comic strip originally entitled what?

Answer: Life In Hell

The title was changed to "Life Is Swell" in 2007. The story followed the lives of two humanoid rabbits and a gay couple. Groening originally paid for and published the comic himself, but it was eventually noticed by the "Los Angeles Reader", who began publishing it weekly in 1980. Groening was eventually asked to turn the strip into an animated series, but Groening decided to create a new show instead, and thus "The Simpsons" was born.
5. One of these voice actors, Trey Parker, is a force to be reckoned with. In what combat skill does he hold a black belt?

Answer: Taekwando

Trey actually did his own fighting in a movie called Orgazmo, but said in an interview that he had to relearn most of his skills, seeing as he earned his black belt when he was in his teens. He still considers it a hobby, but does not regularly take lessons anymore.

Not recommended for children.
6. Seth MacFarlane had a prominent role as a voice actor in which fantasy action film?

Answer: Hellboy II: The Golden Army

He did the voice of German psychic Johann Krauss, whose body was destroyed but whose "ectoplasmic spirit" resided in some type of suit that contained it. The voice he used for Krauss was very similar to the one he used for Klaus, the talking fish on "American Dad!". Seth remarked in an interview that it was tough to bring a character to life who had no facial expressions, but also said that he had a blast playing the part.
7. All four people in this quiz have graduated from college.

Answer: False

Trey Parker started out at Berklee School of Music, but transferred to the University of Colorado. He was a music major, but never graduated. When UCB offered him an honorary degree, he said he wouldn't accept it unless it was in Astrophysics. Matt Groening got his education at The Evergreen State College in Oregon, which he said was "a hippie college...that drew every weirdo in the Northwest." Seth MacFarlane attended the Rhode Island School of Design, and was part of the RISD Movie Club. Matt Stone received his two degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
8. Matt Groening is part of an eclectic rock band called "Rock Bottom Remainders". Which two famous authors are also part of this band?

Answer: Steven King and Mitch Albom

The band was formed in 1990 and has many members, including Maya Angelou and Barbara Kingsolver. They have concerts occasionally and at time have even had famous musicians such as Bruce Springsteen play with them. Their biggest gig was perhaps the time they played at the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in 1995. Said Matt Groening, "People are throwing panties at you.

They certainly never do that at my book signings."
9. In June of 2006, Seth MacFarlane delivered the class day address at which Ivy-League university?

Answer: Harvard

His 20-minute speech took him through three well-known voices: Peter, Stewie, and Quagmire, in which he parodied public figures and celebrities, while insulting Yale and other colleges. A big topic for him was the stereotypical elitism of Harvard students. Peter focused on the wonderful inventions (like spray cheese and band-aids) that must have been created by Harvard students, while Stewie commented on how they were all going to compromise their values for money.

The speech was very funny and can be found on YouTube.
10. What did Matt Stone and Trey Parker do at the 72nd Academy Awards in 2000?

Answer: They wore dresses made populer by Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Trey Parker wore the green dress that Jennifer Lopez wore, and Matt Stone wore the pink dress that Gwyneth Paltrow wore. One of the other choices is based on reality. After the "South Park" episode "Trapped In The Closet" aired and they took a lot of heat for it, Trey and Matt made a statement in which they stated they were "servants of the dark lord Xenu".
