- Sidney Poitier (Miami) was the first African American actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Lead Role for his work as Homer Smith in "Lilies of the Field" (1963).

- Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (Tampa) was an American jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. His nickname "Cannonball" is actually derived from "cannibal", a reference to Adderley's large appetite in high school.

- Jim Morrison (Melbourne) was an American singer, songwriter, and poet who was the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the rock band, "The Doors" He died roughly nine months after Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix had succumbed to drugs. They became members of the musicians' "27 Club" upon their deaths.

- David Robinson (Key West) is an American former professional basketball player who played for the San Antonio Spurs in the National Basketball Association (1989-2003). Nicknamed "the Admiral" for his service with the U.S. Navy, Robinson was a 10-time NBA All-Star, the 1995 NBA MVP, and a two-time NBA champion (1999 and 2003).

- Stepin Fetchit (Key West), whose real name was Lincoln Perry, was an American comedian, vaudevillian, and film actor of Jamaican and Bahamian descent. He is considered to be the first black actor to have a successful film career.

- Tom Petty (Gainesville) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. In addition to being a successful solo artist, he was the frontman of the rock bands "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" and "Mudcrutch" and, in the late 1980s, a member of the supergroup "The Traveling Wilburys."

- Frances Langford (Hernando) was an American singer and actress who appeared in films and television for over two decades. She has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one at 1500 Vine Street for her contributions to motion pictures, and one at 1525 Vine Street for her work in radio.

- Dwight Gooden (Tampa), also known as "Doc," is a legendary figure in the world of baseball. He won the 1984 NL Rookie of the Year Award, the 1985 NL Cy Young Award and Triple Crown and two World Series Championships (1986 and 2000).

- Steve Carlton (Miami) is a former American professional baseball player. He was a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball for six different teams from 1965 to 1988. Most notably, he was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, with whom he won four Cy Young Awards, as well as the 1980 World Series. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.

- Joseph W. Stilwell (Palatka) was a United States Army general who served during World War II. He disagreed with his superiors on American policy in China and was removed from his post by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His name was given to a prominent road in the Chongqing region of China, and a Chinese museum was also established in his honor.
