Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which singer's opening routine at the 2007 "MTV Awards" caused a media furor when it showed her not quite at her best, as she performed her song "Gimme More"?

Answer: Britney Spears

Britney's dance routine lacked her usual style and grace, to the dismay of her fans, and caused much media comment. Her personal troubles were such that in 2008 she was made a ward and her father was given control of her finances and other legal business. In spite of her obviously troubled personal life, Britney Spears was the most successful female artist, in terms of sales, for the first decade of the 21st century, and has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
"Gimme More" made the Top Ten in the singles charts in eight countries, and was a number one hit in Canada.
2. Tim Commerford, from the band Rage Against the Machine, actually ended up in jail for 24 hours after he climbed up part of the stage set at the MTV Awards in 2000. He went up there to protest at another band's winning an award. Who was the object of his insults?

Answer: Limp Bizkit

Rage Against the Machine lost out on the award for Best Rock Video to Limp Bizkit that year. Bassist Commerford scaled some scaffolding at the side of the stage in protest, and refused to come down. He was eventually forcibly removed by security personnel and spent the night in jail.
Rage Against the Machine have won at least two Grammy Awards in their career, and in 2008 were entered into the "Kerrang!" magazine Hall of Fame. Their single "Killing in the Name" was the Christmas number one on the UK Singles Chart in 2009.
3. Which singer was left red faced after Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction during their live half time performance at Super Bowl XXXVIII?

Answer: Justin Timberlake

Janet Jackson was wearing gold jewellery under her clothes and was exposed for a very short time, but the incident, famously referred to afterwards as a "wardrobe malfunction" led to over half a million complaints to the American broadcasting authorities. TV company CBS was later fined $550,000 for offending public decency.
During her career, Janet Jackson has won several Grammy Awards. She is among the most successful female recording artists of all time.
Justin Timberlake first found fame as a member of the boy band N'Sync, and then went on to have a successful solo career, selling over 16 million albums worldwide.
4. At the MTV Video Music Awards, held in New York in 2009, which star stormed the stage and spoiled the moment for Taylor Swift, as she was presented with her award for Best Female Video?

Answer: Kanye West

West burst onto the stage and took the microphone from Taylor's hands to declare that he thought Beyonce Knowles had a better video. When Beyonce won the award for Video of the Year later in the evening, she called Taylor back to the stage to finish her speech.
President Obama was later reported as having called West "a jackass" for his antics.
Kanye West is a music producer and rapper who has sold around 12 million records worldwide. Among an extensive list of awards and accolades, he has MOBO and Grammy Awards.
5. This was not quite "The Man who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo", but the man who figured out how to beat TV game show "Press Your Luck". Who was the man who won over $100,000 after he figured out a successful system in 1984?

Answer: Michael Larson

The game depended on contestants pressing a button to stop a flashing light on prizes, cash, free spins, or "whammy". In 1984, Michael Larson figured out the patterns of the light and was able to hit whichever square he wanted to, during the game. He eventually won a total of $110,237 worth of cash and prizes.
6. Which singer suffered a broken nose when part of the scenery fell and hit his head during the televised presentation of the Tony Awards in 2009?

Answer: Bret Michaels

Michaels and his band Poison were at the ceremony to perform with the cast of musical "Rock of Ages" when the scenery fell. As well as his broken nose, Bret had to have stitches in his lip.
Poison were at their most successful in the 1980s, and have sold over 25 million records worldwide. Their best known song is perhaps "Every Rose has its Thorn" which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1988.
7. During a live performance at the 40th Anniversary Grammy Awards show, Bob Dylan was distracted and interrupted by a man who burst onto the stage and danced around wildly. What was written on the dancer's chest?

Answer: Soy Bomb

Michael Portnoy had actually been hired as a dancer in the background of Dylan's performance, but managed to take centre stage with his antics. Bob tried to keep singing and ignore the distraction, and in the end Portnoy was led from the stage by a security man.
During a career spanning over half a century, Bob Dylan has won many Grammy Awards.
8. The live ceremony for the Brit Awards in 1989 went down in the annals of British television history as a superb example of how not to present a show live. Which unlikely pair gave us some of the most excruciating moments of all time in awards presentation?

Answer: Samantha Fox and Mick Fleetwood

Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac fame, and Samantha Fox made an unusual pair to say the least. The whole live show degenerated into a shambles of missed cues, mixed up lines, and at least one video acceptance speech (from Michael Jackson) was lost completely and never shown.
Mick Fleetwood is the drummer with Fleetwood Mac. The band's album "Rumours" has sold more than 40 million copies since it was first released in 1977.
Samantha Fox first found fame in the UK as a glamour model, and later as a pop singer. She has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and her debut single "Touch Me" reached number one in the singles charts of five countries when it was released in 1986.
9. Which singer will be forever remembered for getting the words of "The Star Spangled Banner" mixed up at Super Bowl XLV?

Answer: Christina Aguilera

Christina has sold at least 50 million albums worldwide during her career, and is one of the most successful female recording artists of all time. During her performance of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl in 2011, she sang the wrong line at one point, and later said that it was because she was nervous and overwhelmed at the occasion.
10. One of the first televised instances of "wardrobe malfunction" on American TV came in 1977, when Yolanda Bowersley's tube top slipped down and exposed more than she intended to the cameras. On which game show was she a contestant at the time?

Answer: The Price is Right

As the show announcer Johnny Olson said at the time, "She came on down, and they came on out"!
It took some minutes before anyone realised what had happened, and Yolanda was oblivious, only adjusting her top when one of her fellow contestants pointed it out to her.
Johnny Olson's career as an announcer began in 1958 when he worked on "Name That Tune", and he worked on "The Price is Right" from 1972 until he passed away in 1985.
