Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Martha Stewart was her usual gracious self while she served time in prison. What company's stock was at the center of her legal troubles?

Answer: ImClone

Ms. Stewart's jail sentence wasn't actually for insider trading, but instead for obstructing justice because she lied about the insider trading. ImClone stock was about to plummet because clinical trials of their new drug didn't succeed, and it was expected that the Federal Drug Administration would respond negatively. Ms. Stewart sold about $230,000 worth of stock to avoid a loss of about $46,000, but did not tell the truth about where she had received the information to sell right before the announcement of the clinical trial results.

She served five months, and even built a nativity scene in prison while she was there. Her reputation miraculously survived the scandal. This question was provided by player pusdoc for Phoenix Rising's Red Crew.
2. Which Beatle sued the other group members and Apple Corps in 1970 to beg for dissolution of the band?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Paul was expressed concerns about a business manager, Allen Klein, that the band had brought in over his objections. He had wanted to hire Lee Eastman, father of wife Linda. (Of note, the rest of the band also became disenchanted with Klein shortly thereafter.) There was an agreement they had signed years before that locked them in for 10 years, and McCartney didn't want to stay bound to Klein that long, and was advised that he couldn't actually sue the manager but would need to sue the band and their company, Apple Corps.

The suit was successful, and the rest, as they say, is history. Sir Paul returned to court in later years for a very acrimonious divorce from second wife Heather Mills, which cost him nearly $49 million. Player pusdoc added this question for Phoenix Rising's Red Crew.
3. Due to a history of arrests and bad behavior, one country denied Justin Bieber from performing in 2017. Which country was it?

Answer: China

Justin Bieber had multiple arrests and charges for driving under the influence, reckless driving, and vandalism over a period of several years. His request to perform in China was subsequently denied. The decision to ban his performance on mainland China was widely reported across the globe by the BBC in England, NBC in the US and SBS in Australia, all citing the Beijing Municiple Bureau of Culture as saying he would be a bad influence on the people of China.
But no news is bad news, and ironically, in 2021, Bieber shattered the record for the most-viewed single-artist livestream in TikTok's history with his performance of his 2013 album "Journals". TikTok is a social media platform and Chinese-owned video hosting service.

Red Crew's jaknginger got this question into the team quiz.
4. For what criminal offenses was Bill Cosby, the star of the 1980s hit 'The Cosby Show', charged and convicted in 2018?

Answer: Aggravated indecent assault

Bill Cosby was charged and convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault. He was sentenced to 3-10 years and ordered to pay a $25000 fine along with the prosecution's attorney fees. He entered a Pennsylvania prison on September 25, 2018 and was released June 30, 2021, after a Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling overturned his original conviction. He was released on a technicality, that of a prior District Attorney's spoken, not written, promise of not criminally prosecuting him in 2005. The overturning of the conviction did not mean that Cosby was innocent, but it did mean that even if further evidence should be tendered in the future, that particular case could not be retried.

5. True or False: Boxer Mike Tyson spent time in prison for biting through Evander Holyfield's ear?

Answer: False

Mike Tyson did spend three years in prison for the rape of Desiree Washington, an 18 year old beauty queen, in Indianapolis. He denied the charges but was sentenced to six years imprisonment and four years' probation in 1992. Tyson did bite off part of Holyfield's ear in 1997, but this only resulted in a disqualification and the loss (temporarily) of his boxing licence.

6. "Desperate Housewives" star Felicity Huffman was arrested in 2019. What was the charge and subsequent conviction?

Answer: Conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud

Felicity Huffman was arrested, charged, and eventually pled guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in a college admissions scandal. Huffman paid to have her daughter's incorrect answers on a SAT corrected, to enable her to get into her choices of college. The workings of the scheme were that parents paid money via a charity for services to assist their children to get into colleges they otherwise would not be admitted to on their own. The self-confessed mastermind of the scheme, Rick Singer, netted millions through the scheme but, still on bail, he is allegedly assisting the FBI to convict the parents caught in the scheme, and due to this, he could be afforded lenience when his case is tried.

Huffman was ordered to spend 14 days in prison, 12-months of supervised release, pay a $30,000 fine, and provide 250 hours of community service.

7. Who played Phil Spector and his defense attorney in the 2013 film 'Phil Spector' the story of the murder of Lana Clarkson?

Answer: Al Pacino and Helen Mirren

American actress Lana Clarkson was found dead at the home of record producer Phil Spector in February 2003. Spector's chauffeur later claimed he had heard a gunshot and saw Spector leave the house carrying a gun. After an initial mistrial, Spector was found guilty of murder in 2008 and was sentenced to nineteen years in prison. He died in 2021, of a covid-related illness, after serving twelve years.
Spector was a renowned music producer who was considered to one of the most influential people in pop music working with acts such as Ike and Tina Turner, The Beatles and The Righteous Brothers.
In 2013 a biographical dramatisation of Clarkson and Spector was released on television. It starred Al Pacino as Phil Spector and Helen Mirren as Lana Clarkson.

8. R & B singer/songwriter R. Kelly was convicted on nine counts on September 27, 2021. The convictions were eight 'Mann Act' violations and one other conviction. What other conviction was it?

Answer: Racketeering

Kelly had legal troubles dating back to the early 1990s, allegedly with child pornography. In 2008 he stood trial and was acquitted of those charges. Years later a new case was brought against him and he was arrested in 2019. In 2021 he was found guilty of one count of racketeering and 8 violations of the Mann Act and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. After years of accusations, pay-offs, and civil suits, he was found guilty in September 2021. Kelly allegedly had elaborately planned, schemed, and mistreated females for over 25 years. Evidence heard in his trial proved he had schemed to use females, some underage, for sexual favors, marriage, abuse, and making videos. Under the Mann Act, (previously called the White-Slave Traffic Act), Kelly was found guilty of three counts of transporting across state lines for sex, four counts of coercion, and one count of transportation of a minor.

9. Which Paralympic sport celebrity was convicted of murder in July 2016?

Answer: Oscar Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius was a South African Paralympic champion. His feet were amputated at 11 months old and he ran using specially designed 'blades'. On Valentine's Day 2013 Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, as she left the bathroom. Pistorius claimed he thought she was an intruder. He was initially convicted of culpable homicide, but that verdict was overturned by an appeal panel and he was then convicted of murder. His sentence was extended from 6 years to 15.

10. Sean Combs (AKA P Diddy), appeared in court accused of firing a gun in a club in December 1999. He was at the club with his protégé Jamal Barrow, his bodyguard Anthony Jones and his girlfriend. Who was his girlfriend at the time?

Answer: Jennifer Lopez

All the ladies mentioned have dated Mr Combs at some point. Singer Jennifer Lopez and Sean Combs began dating in 1999, after he was involved in producing her debut album "On The 6". In December 1999, quite early in their relationship, they were at 'Club New York' in Times Square when an argument provoked Jamal Barrow into firing a gun three times, wounding four people. Sean Combs was accused of firing once into the air. Jennifer Lopez was considered to be a witness but was not called to give a statement in court. Barrow was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment but Sean Combs was acquitted. Combs and Lopez's relationship continued in a tumultuous fashion before coming to an end in 2001.
