Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The late Gordon Jump (station manager Arthur Carlson) was involved in an infamous jump-the-shark moment in 1983, when he was featured as a pedophile in a two-part "very special episode" arc of what popular sitcom?

Answer: "Diff'rent Strokes"

In the two-part arc "The Bicycle Man" (originally broadcast February 5 and February 12, 1983), Gordon Jump played Mr. Horton, the outgoing and friendly owner of a bicycle shop. Arnold (Gary Coleman) and his pal Dudley (Shavar Ross) became friendly with Horton, but he has sinister plans of his own.

A versatile character actor who had a background as a television producer and weatherman, Jump is also well known for playing Ol' Lonely, the Maytag Repairman, in television and print commercials, from 1989 until shortly before his death in 2003.
2. Actor Frank Bonner (sales manager Herb Tarlek) has been successful behind the camera, working as a director on a number of well-known TV shows. Which of the following shows did Bonner NOT work as a director on?

Answer: "Designing Women"

"The Doctor's Daughter" (originally broadcast February 18, 1980) was the first of six episodes of "WKRP" that Bonner directed between 1980 and 1982. He also directed fellow "WKRP" alumnus Tim Reid in an episode of Reid's series "Frank's Place" in 1988.

He was most prolific, however, as the director of the young adult series "City Guys", which was part of NBC's TNBC Saturday-morning programming block from 1997 to 2001.
3. Gary Sandy (program director Andy Travis) has extensive experience on soap operas, in addition to his work on "WKRP". Which of the following soaps did Sandy NOT appear on before he joined the "WKRP" family?

Answer: "The Young and the Restless"

Although Gary Sandy did appear on the popular "The Young and the Restless", in the role of Terrence Kelley, it wasn't until 2001, almost 20 years after "WKRP" was cancelled. After "WKRP", Sandy remained busy as a guest star on various programs, including "Diagnosis Murder", "L.A. Law" and "Murder, She Wrote", and worked extensively in theatre.
4. Before joining the "WKRP" cast, Jan Smithers (traffic manager Bailey Quarters) was discovered when she was featured on the cover of what major American magazine, in 1966?

Answer: Newsweek

Reporter David Moberg did a story that ran in the March 21, 1966, edition of Newsweek focusing on typical American teenagers. The photograph of Smithers sitting on a friend's motorcycle, taken by Julian Wasser, led to commercial work while she was a student at the California Institute of the Arts. "WKRP" creator Hugh Wilson reportedly picked Smithers to play Bailey Quarters because she was both beautiful and shy, qualities that Smithers shared with Wilson's wife.
5. Richard Sanders (news director Les Nessman) not only logged plenty of guest appearances on TV after "WKRP", he also provided the voice of the main character in which computer game?

Answer: "Day of the Tentacle"

Designed by Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer for LucasArts, "Day of the Tentacle" was the sequel to the the successful "Maniac Mansion". In "Day of the Tentacle", Sanders voices the nerdy Bernard Bernoulli, who works with Dr. Fred Edison and his friends, Laverne and Hoagie, to prevent Purple Tentacle from taking over the world.
6. After the cancellation of "WKRP" in 1982, Tim Reid (late-night DJ Venus Flytrap) spent five seasons playing Detective "Downtown" Brown on what successful dramatic series?

Answer: "Simon & Simon"

Tim Reid enjoyed success after "WKRP", including his stint on "Simon & Simon" and in two starring roles--as college professor Frank Parish on the critically acclaimed "Frank's Place" (1987-88) (reuniting him with "WKRP" creator Hugh Wilson) and as limo-service owner Ray Campbell on the popular "Sister, Sister" (1994-99).

He has also produced films through his Virginia-based production company along with his wife, actress Daphne Maxwell Reid.
7. Howard Hesseman (morning DJ Dr. Johnny Fever) prepared for his role on "WKRP" by working as a DJ at a radio station in which U.S. city?

Answer: San Francisco

"WKRP" creator Hugh Wilson drew on his experience in a radio station in Atlanta to come up with the characters and premise for the show. But Hesseman worked on the West Coast to sharpen his skills for the camera. After "WKRP", Hesseman starred on the sitcom "Head of the Class", as the unorthodox honors-class teacher Charlie Moore, for four seasons (1986-90).
8. While "WKRP" was hitting its stride, Loni Anderson (receptionist Jennifer Marlowe) took on the challenge of playing what famous woman in a 1980 made-for-TV movie?

Answer: Jayne Mansfield

Despite her stunning good looks and her acting ability, Loni Anderson was never a regular player on a true hit beyond "WKRP". She appeared on a number of short-lived shows after "WKRP", including "Partners in Crime" (with "Wonder Woman" star Lynda Carter) and "Easy Street" (with Jack Elam and Lee Weaver).

She also made appearances as hospital administrator Casey MacAfee on both "Empty Nest" and its spin-off, "Nurses", working as a regular on the latter show during the last of its three seasons (1993-94). And, of course, there was that messy divorce from fellow thespian Burt Reynolds.
9. The late Carol Bruce (station owner Mama Carlson) enjoyed a career in film and television that stretched over six decades. In 1951, she starred opposite the late Jack Palance in "The King in Yellow", an installment of which famed television anthology series?

Answer: "Studio One"

Carol Bruce was actually the second person to play Mama Carlson on "WKRP". The late Sylvia Sydney played the character in the pilot episode in 1978. Bruce made her film debut in 1941 in the movie "This Woman Is Mine" alongside Academy Award nominee Franchot Tone and Academy Award winner Walter Brennan.

After "WKRP" she made numerous appearances on TV and in films, including "Too Close For Comfort" and "Jake and the Fatman".
10. Edie McClurg (Herb Tarlek's wife, Lucille) did extensive work as a cartoon voice-over artist during and after her time on "WKRP". Which of the following cartoons did McClurg NOT provide a voice for?

Answer: "Pinky and the Brain"

In addition to her work as a cartoon voice, Edie McClurg is well known for playing Mrs. Poole, the friendly, sweet-natured neighbor on the popular sitcom "Valerie" (later "The Hogan Family"). She's also been in a number of feature films, including "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Mr. Mom", and "A River Runs Through It". McClurg did not work on the popular "Pinky and the Brain", which featured Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche as the voices of the two nutty lab mice.
