Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As related in "X-Men" #38-42, the first recruit to the team was Cyclops. What name did the antagonist of this story arc go by?

Answer: Jack O'Diamonds

Jack Winters had a wide array of powers, including telepathy and limited teleportation. After exposing himself to radiation, he was able to make his body into nearly indestructible diamond. He was conniving and power hungry and would have made for a great returning villain, but he was killed off when Cyclops aimed a vibration ray at him until he shattered. Like most comic book deaths, later writers found a way out and he ultimately went on to fight another day.
2. The first person to join the X-Men after the original five members wasn't even a mutant. What name did he go by?

Answer: Mimic

In "X-Men" #19, we find that Calvin Rankin gained his powers via some chemical mix-up in his dad's lab (as Silver Age as it gets!), and could mimic the powers of mutants close to him (hello, Peter Petrelli). While he needed to be within just a few feet of someone to gain their powers, he could retain them for some distance before they disappeared.

He was a bit of a narcissist and sociopath, so it's unclear why Professor X would have let him join the team, but drama is drama!
3. In "X-Men" #4, we are introduced to Magneto's counter to the Xavier's X-Men, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. What four made up this team in its original incarnation?

Answer: Mastermind, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Toad

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were brother and sister and ultimately bail on Magento in "X-Men" #11. Mastermind eventually joined with the Hellfire Club and played a role in the Dark Phoenix saga. Toad left the group when he realized that Magneto didn't really care for him.

The group of Frenzy, Stinger, Timeshadow, and Tower were the team of Apocalypse's Alliance of Evil. They first appeared in the comic book "X-Factor", which starred the original X-Men. You'd think that from just a PR perspective, people would shy away from throwing "evil" right in their name, but there you go.
4. "X-Men" #50 introduces a new character to the X-Men story. This green-haired mutant will go on to appear in several mutant books. Who is it?

Answer: Lorna Dane

Though her background has varied, Lorna Dane is generally written as being the daughter of Magneto (that guy got around!). For a long time, she had a relationship with Havok, the brother of Cyclops.
5. Before he joined the X-Men as Beast, Hank McCoy showed some incredible talent while playing what sport in college?

Answer: Football

While Beast no doubt would have excelled at all of those sports, he gained attention dominating on the gridiron and even stopped some thieves as they attempted to rob the ticket office of all of its cash during a big game! Also, Beast's tale is a throwback to Professor X's story told in "X-Men" #11.

There, the professor noted that he was once a star quarterback, but much of his success came from the fact that he could read the minds of his opponents and knew what they were going to do. Eventually, he gave up playing sports because of his mutant advantage.
6. Banshee was a member of the "new" X-Men with the publication of "Giant-Size X-Men" #1. However, he was originally a foe of the team when he first appeared in "X-Men" #28. At that time, what was the nefarious group with which he was associated?

Answer: Factor Three

All four groups faced the X-Men at some point. Factor Three was an odd creation and sadly, despite its role in a major story arc in the series, it never quite caught on like major antagonists from other Marvel titles, like the Kree and Skrull from the Fantastic Four and Avengers, or Daredevil's The Hand.
7. Of the five original members Professor X recruited to his team, who was the last one added to the group?

Answer: Marvel Girl

Cyclops was the first, as detailed in "X-Men" #39-42. Iceman was second, and his story appears in "X-Men" #44-46. Third was Angel, whose story is told in X-Men #54-56. Interestingly, we are told at the end of "X-Men" #47 that Angel's was the next origin story to be told, but in fact the next was the origin of Beast, whose story was told in "X-Men" #49-53. Nevertheless, at the end of the Beast story, it is clear that Angel was already a member of the team.

The origin of Marvel Girl (Jean Grey) is not told in the initial "X-Men" run (the series ended original runs with #66 and did reprints after that-- it didn't start anew until "Giant Sized X-Men" #1 and "X-Men" #94).
8. The Sentinels first appeared in "X-Men" #13, and are a recurring foe for the team. Who was responsible for their creation?

Answer: Bolivar Trask

Trask finally realizes that the X-Men were fighting the good fight and give his life to help them escape his evil creation in "X-Men" #16. Worthington is Angel, and Marko is Xavier's half-brother known as the Juggernaut. Hydra was an antagonist organization that battled Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D.
9. In "X-Men" #31, the team battles Ralph Roberts, who took the moniker Cobalt Man. What company did Roberts formerly work for?

Answer: Stark Industries

Roberts left Stark Industries because the company wouldn't turn over its Iron Man design to the government. He was pretty smart, though, and designed a new battle suit using a cobalt alloy when he started his own Roberts Robotics company. Unfortunately, he had previously suffered some brain trauma and ultimately turned hostile towards Jean Grey (who was briefly dating Ralph's brother Ted) and the X-Men.

The other answers are companies that appear in other Marvel titles, usually associated with nefarious activities.
10. "X-Men" #66 was the last issue of title's original run before it switched to reprints. Who was the antagonist in this issue?

Answer: Hulk

The X-Men needed technology from Bruce Banner to help an ailing Professor X. While they managed to get the necessary equipment from Banner's secret Nevada lab, they had to battle his green-skinned alter-ego first.
