The original Rin Tin Tin was born in France on September 10, 1918, to Betty des Flandres and Fritz de la Chasse Royale. During World War I, on September 15, 1918, the dog kennel where he was born was bombed and the litter of five and their mother was rescued by Corporal Lee Duncan, an American soldier who led his troop to the bombed kennel in Lorraine, France.

Corporal Lee Duncan kept two puppies, a male he named Rin Tin Tin and a female he named Nannette. Unfortunately, Nannette died from distemper a few days after arriving in America. Eventually, Duncan brought Rin Tin Tin into the movies, and history was made.
