Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting with the meme that inspired this quiz, what does it mean when someone says "Haters to the left"?

Answer: Negative people should leave

This meme started in 2007 when the phrase was used in an episode of the TV show "30 Rock". The character Kenneth said "Don't let no one in who's not on the list cause this mess is gonna get raw like sushi. So, haters to the left."

According to Google Trends searches for the phrase suddenly jumped up in mid-2009, peaking in January 2010.
2. The meme "I don't want to live on this planet any more" involves a still shot of a frowning character from which cartoon?

Answer: Futurama

The meme features Professor Farnsworth with accompanying text which is a quote made by the character in a 2010 episode of the show. The image is often used in comments threads and forums to express disgust at what a previous contributor has said. The meme shows up in Google Trends about six months after the episode was originally aired, peaking in late 2011.
3. "Ermahgerd!" What emotion does this bit of internet onomatopoeia express?

Answer: Excitement

"Ermahgerd" is the transliteration "Oh my God!" exclaimed in the mock-accent of someone with an orthodontic retainer. The "Ermahgerd" meme is based on a photo of a girl apparently very excited about having received three new books from the Goosebumps series, which was submitted to the website Reddit in March 2012. Copies of the photo with various creatively spelled exclamations were quickly created and shared, and the term also spread to other photos including animal pictures.

According to Google Trends the term "Ermahgerd" peaked in search terms in august 2012.

PS: While checking this quiz I discovered that spell check does not recognise "Ermahgerd". I am shocked, I say, shocked.
4. What is the phrase used in internet memes to indicate that something has been, or is about to be, badly botched?

Answer: Epic fail

"Fail" -- never "Failure" -- somehow became the term of choice in internet slang to describe something that ends badly. It is often thrown out as an interjection (Fail!) or slapped over pictures of some mishap. According to knowyourmeme.com the likely origin of the meme is the end-of-game message from a late 1990s Japanese video game:
"YOU FAIL IT!
YOUR SKILL IS NOT ENOUGH-
SEE YOU NEXT TIME- BYE BYE."

Various offshoots have become memes of themselves, including: Epic Fail Guy; Full of Fail; and Learn From My Fail. Naturally, the opposite of an Epic Fail is an Epic Win.
5. There are many varieties of this meme, but arguably the most famous features Star Trek's Captain Picard. What is it?

Answer: Facepalm

"Facepalm" is about as literal as a neologism can get. It describes the action of burying one's upper face in the palm of the hand as an expression of disbelief. In online culture the facepalm is often used in reaction to something considered unbelievably stupid.
6. If I post a comment to an online forum saying simply "tl;dr", what does this mean?

Answer: Too long; didn't read

This acronym can be used in two ways:
1. As a smackdown to a previous commenter whose contribution was wordy and repetitive.
2. Less commonly, it may be added to the end of one's own comment to preface a brief summary of the longer text.

According to Google Trends the abbreviation (both with and without the semi-colon) first emerged in search terms in significant numbers in early 2005. I am a punctuation nerd so I insist on the semi-colon myself.
7. What is most prominent in a picture of someone doing a duckface?

Answer: Their lips

"Duckface" is the word mockingly given to photographs (most often associated with self-portraits of teenage girls) in which the subject has an exaggerated pout, so that their lips take on the shape of a duck bill. The popularity of such poses in photos shared on the intranet was first noted on MySpace, and so the meme was initially called "myspace face".

"Duckface" made its debut in the online Urban Dictionary in 2006; however, the term has social currency well before then. For example, a minor character in the sitcom "Full House" was known as "Duckface" - shown in an episode airing in the 1980s.
8. According to the wildly popular "I can has" meme, what food is an unexpected favourite of cats?

Answer: Cheeseburgers

It all started with people emailing each other pictures of their cats. The weblog "I Can Has Cheezburger?" had its genesis in 2007 and in less than a year was sold for $2 million. It has since grown into the "Cheezburger Network": a whole series of blogs devoted to sharing photographic memes and promoting the lolcat language. If you are an refined lover of linguistics and haven't heard of this particular dialect...delve into this world at your own risk!
9. Name the action that this sound conveys: NOM NOM NOM.

Answer: Eating

Specifically, this phrase indicates that what is being eaten is delicious. It originated in the tv show "Sesame Street", as the sound Cookie Monster would make while ravenously devouring cookies, other food, or any material substance. Hopefully the table manner at your house are such that you don't hear this sound except in jest!
10. In internet culture, what word describes a member of an online community who regularly reads other people's comments but rarely posts their own?

Answer: Lurker

There is a whole field of academic research into the psychology of online behaviour, including what percentage of regular forum visitors are lurkers, and why people choose to lurk rather than participate.

Many online communities have a strongly held but unwritten culture and etiquette, and it can't be assumed that what is OK in one forum will be acceptable in another. So lurking is often a good way of getting to know the community norms before jumping in. If you violate the etiquette of a self-monitoring community you might find yourself being slapped down with the advice to "lurk moar". Essentially this means you should keep quiet until you know how to behave yourself :)
