Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Braided hair forms two plaits on each side of the head

Answer: Pigtails

The most common description of pigtails refers to hair which is divided at the back of the head to form two separate bunches which are then plaited (braided) to form two plaits on either side of the head. Pigtails are a way of keeping the hair tidy and are often worn by schoolgirls. The plaits can also be tied up and worn on the top of the head, but that's a different style.
2. Hair is teased to form a high rounded shape

Answer: Beehive

Particularly popular in the 1960s, the beehive hairstyle involves a lot of backcombing to tease the hair into a high bouffant style. The more hair you had, the higher the beehive would become forming a cone like shape which resembled the shape of a traditional beehive, giving the style its name. A large dose of hairspray was needed to keep the style in place. Although primarily a sixties style, it is still seen occasionally - Amy Winehouse sported this hairstyle.
3. Early twentieth century style of short hair

Answer: Bob

The bob became popular in the early part of the twentieth century. Before then, long hair was favoured although usually worn braided and styled around or on top of the head rather than hanging loose. The bob is particularly associated with the flapper era when women rebelled against the traditional behaviour expected of them.

The bob also cut down dramatically on the time needed to style the hair.
4. Business at the front, party at the back

Answer: Mullet

The mullet hairstyle was particularly popular during the1980s and is mainly, though not exclusively, sported by men. The style keeps the hair short at the sides and on the top of the head, but long at the back, giving it its popular description used in the question. Versions of the style were worn prior to the 1980s, with David Bowie and Tom Jones both pictured with a style similar to the mullet before its heyday. Billy Ray Cyrus may be the best known man to sport a mullet, but he was far from alone as many well known actors followed the trend.
5. Style to keep long hair neat

Answer: Bun

A bun is a way of keeping long hair neat and tidy and involves pulling the hair away from the face and forming a coil either at the nape of the neck or on top of the head. Queen Victoria, in her earlier days, wore her hair in a bun and coins issued when she first came to the throne had her image with this hairstyle. Bun pennies were issued between 1860 and as late as 1894. The 'man bun' is a style adopted by long-haired men and is usually worn as a topknot.
6. Punk style of spiked hair, often dyed

Answer: Mohawk

The style has been around longer than you'd think but was particularly prominent during the punk era of the 1970s. The most common style involves shaving the sides of the head leaving a longer strip of hair through the middle. This strip is sometimes left particularly long and gelled to form spikes and/or dyed various vivid colours. Mr. T, who appeared in the television series 'The A-Team' wore a fairly modest version of this style.
7. Modern style but dating from Middle Ages

Answer: Pageboy

The pageboy hairstyle is named after the style worn by young boys in the mediaeval era. The hair is generally kept all one length and styled to turn under, towards the face, at the ends. The length can vary from short to shoulder length, although level with the jaw is the traditional length. Anna Wintour is particularly known for her pageboy hairstyle.
8. Men's style from 1950s, named for its appearance from behind

Answer: Ducktail

The ducktail is mostly a hairstyle sported by males and was popular in the 1950s. The hair is greased and slicked back away from the face before a parting is made at the back of the head to divide the hair into distinct sections. The resemblance to the rear end of a duck gave it its name, variants of which may not get past the Fun Trivia filter. In the UK, the style was associated with teddy boys while in the USA the likes of Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers adopted the style in their early days.
9. Short cut sported by Twiggy

Answer: Pixie Cut

The pixie cut is a very short hairstyle with the hair cut short at the back and sides and left a little longer on the top. It became popular in the 1950s with actresses such as Mia Farrow and Audrey Hepburn sporting it. The style has never gone particularly out of fashion and has regular returns to popularity, particularly for women who like a gamine look..
10. Tight plaits worn close to the scalp

Answer: Cornrows

Cornrows are a form of plaiting the hair very close to the scalp forming tight, raised rows of hair. The style is believed to have originated in Africa and was brought to the Americas and Caribbean area during the dark days of slavery. Cornrows, once complete (a process which can take hours) can be left in place for weeks, provided the hair is washed carefully. They can be worn by both men and women and are a way of keeping the naturally curly hair of those with African heritage under control.
