Hair can actually be cloned by taking a hair whose follicle cells are capable of growth, reproducing it in vitro, and when implanting the new hairs into the scalp. The technique, although quite new, is very promising and may even someday provide a cure for baldness and thinning hair.

Layering refers to the practice of cutting hair in different lengths to achieve both longer length and fullness. It works well in many cases, especially if a person'a hair is curly or wavy, however, thinning straight hair may be better styled with a blunt cut.

"Plugs" were composed of groups of hair follicles a few millimeters around. They were somewhat successful in replacing hair in areas where it had stopped growing, but the results somewhat resembled the appearance of dolls' hair-small clumps at regularly spaced intervals on the head. Surgeons have spent much time and effort on reducing the size of each group of hairs to be transplanted, resulting in smaller individual incisions in the scalp and a more natural appearance once the transplanted hair grows out.

Teasing hair used to be an everyday process for millions of women back in the mid-20th century. Beehive hairdos are created by teasing the hair, then combing the hair smoothe on the top of the teased area. The teasing creates knots of hair and causes follicles to split, resulting in significant damage, but it is effective in making it look like the person has more hair than they really do, and it's inexpensive and can be done at home.

"Doughnuts", or "bun rats", are circular forms used to create buns-basically, the hair is put into a high pony tail, the doughnut is positioned at the top or the back of the head, and the hair is wound around it, covering the doughnut. Hairpins are used to secure the doughnut in place.
