Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I nearly required medical assistance when I first saw the film "A Fish Called Wanda". With what language did Archie (John Cleese) romance Wanda (Jamie Lee Curtis)?

Answer: Russian

Otto (played by Kevin Kline) uses Italian in his "romantic" scenes with Wanda. When she asks Archie to speak Italian to her, he declares it to be an ugly language, and proceeds to speak Russian whilst stripping off. Archie's full name is Archibald Leach, which was actor Cary Grant's real name.
2. I find most novelty songs pretty dire. However, a favourite that has stood the test of time is "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)" by Benny Hill. What was the name of Ernie's love rival?

Answer: Ted

"Now Ernie had a rival, an evil looking man, called Two Ton Ted from Teddington and he drove the baker's van." "Ernie" spent four weeks at No. 1 in the UK charts in 1971. Only Benny Hill could have made an innocent list of baked goods sound quite so rude. If you're not familiar with the song, do try and listen to it - it's guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
3. In my opinion, this man is one of the greatest stand-up comedians of all time. In fact, I find him "tattifilarious". He was born in 1927 and used to perform on the club circuits under the name of "Professor Yaffle Chuckabutty, Operatic Tenor and Sausage Knotter". By what name is he more commonly known?

Answer: Ken Dodd

Ken earned himself a place in the Guinness Book of Records in the 1960s for the longest joke telling session ever - he told 1,500 jokes in three and a half hours. I've seen him live and he doesn't seem to pause for breath! He is also a gifted singer and his ballad "Tears" spent five weeks at No. 1 in the UK hit parade in 1965.
4. Bill Bryson is one of my favourite authors. The first of his books that I read was "A Walk in the Woods". Unfortunately I started reading it on a train and it made me laugh out loud. I put it away but still carried on laughing, which made matters worse! Where did Bill take his "Walk in the Woods"?

Answer: Appalachian Trail

Bill Bryson was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1951 ("I come from Des Moines. Somebody had to."). "A Walk in the Woods" is an account of his attempt to walk the Appalachian Trail in the company of his old boyhood friend, named in the book as Stephen Katz. Like most of Bill's books, it is crammed full of interesting information and is very, very funny.
5. Victoria Wood has always tickled my funny bone. In the 1980s she starred in her own TV series with which actress?

Answer: Julie Walters

"Wood and Walters" appeared on our screens in 1981. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Victoria Wood, she is a talented comedian, writer and actress. She very often uses the same actors in her shows, notably Susie Blake, Celia Imrie and Duncan Preston. In May 2007 she won two BAFTAs (Best Actress and Best Single Drama) her adaptation of and performance in "Housewife, 49".
6. Stand up (or rather sit down) comedian David Tynan O'Mahoney was better known by what name?

Answer: Dave Allen

Dave Allen (1936-2005) had a very relaxed style, and delivered his monologues whilst sitting on a bar stool, sipping a drink and smoking a cigarette. He also did some wonderful sketches. He had a strict Catholic upbringing and the Catholic Church was often the butt of his jokes. Dave had a great sense of the absurd - something that always makes me laugh.
7. This comedian was also a writer, musician and artist. He is famous for creating "The Goon Show", but I found his written works much funner. His headstone bears the inscription "Duirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite". Who is he?

Answer: Spike Milligan

"Duirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite" is Gaelic for "I told you I was ill". When Harry Secombe died, Spike said "I'm glad he went before me, I didn't want him to sing at my funeral". A recording of Harry Secombe singing "Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer" was played at Spike's funeral.
8. The tagline "A motion picture destined to offend nearly two thirds of the civilised world, and severely annoy the other third" came from which film?

Answer: The Life of Brian

Did you know that Spike Milligan had a cameo role in "The Life of Brian"? Apparently he was holidaying Tunisia, where the film was made. He played the part of a prophet. The film seems just as funny now as when it was first released in 1979.
9. "Not The Nine O'Clock News" was a sketch show that aired in the UK from 1979 to 1982. Which of these people was not one of the four regular cast members?

Answer: Billy Connolly

Billy Connolly did make a guest appearance on the show. Pamela Stephenson (the fourth regular cast member) interviewed him whilst impersonating Janet Street-Porter. Billy and Pamela married in 1989.
10. "Airplane" is possibly the most succesful spoof movie of all time. What was the name of the inflatable autopilot who helped save the day?

Answer: Otto

I think it probably took me about half a dozen viewings to catch all the gags in this one. I can never hear "Staying Alive" without thinking about this film. Did you know that the working title for "Airplane" was "Kentucky Fried Airplane"?
