Sal's Sob Story Trivia Quiz

It's a family joke that I laugh and cry at the drop of a hat. I suppose it's just a matter of adjusting the medication. This is a light hearted quiz about various forms of entertainment that have made me have a good weep.

1. The song "Grocer Jack (Excerpt from a Teenage Opera)" reached No. 3 in the UK Charts in 1969. I'm usually welling up by the time the first line is sung. Who performed the song? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Next, a comedy series. "Blackadder" kept me in tears of laughter over the years, but the last episode of "Blackadder Goes Forth" ("Goodbyeee") was almost too poignant for tears, although I managed a few. When the men are waiting to go "over the top" and the shelling stops, which character says "Thank God! We lived through it! The Great War: 1914-1917."? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The TV series "All Creatures Great and Small" was an adaption of the books by James Herriot, a Yorkshire Vet. One particularly sad episode was when James' own elderly dog had to be put down. James took the dog for one last walk through the fields before the deed was done. I went through the best part of a box of tissues. Which actor played the part of James Herriot in the TV series? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The 1983 film "Champions" stars John Hurt as jockey Bob Champion. The film tells the story of Bob's battle against cancer and his riding the winner to victory in the 1981 English Grand National. His horse had overcome his own injuries to win the race, and needless to say I was in floods as they galloped up to the finishing post. What was the name of the horse? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The closing scene of "Midnight Cowboy" where Dustin Hoffman's character "Ratso" Rizzo dies as the bus approaches Miami claims a few tissues. John Barry won a Grammy for Best Instrumental theme, but the song most people associate with this film is "Everybody's Talking at Me". Who performed this song? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "Ring of Bright Water" is a charming story with a very sad ending. What type of creature is Mij, the central character? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Confession time - I've never been that fond of the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's". However, the scene where Holly Golightly lets the cat out of the car and then changes her mind and rushes off to look for it in the pouring rain gets my tear ducts working overtime. What was the cat called? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Although I already have a quiz online about the book "Black Beauty" I make no apology for dragging it into this quiz! It's a very sad book throughout, but it does have a happy, rather bittersweet ending, that causes a certain degree of lachrymal leakage. However, the part that really makes me sob is when Black Beauty briefly meets up with an old friend whilst working as a cab horse in London. What was the name of that friend? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song "Grocer Jack (Excerpt from a Teenage Opera)" reached No. 3 in the UK Charts in 1969. I'm usually welling up by the time the first line is sung. Who performed the song?

Answer: Keith West

"A Teenage Opera" was commissioned by EMI as a series of songs based in a fantasy village. "Grocer Jack" was the first song to be released, followed by "Sam", which didn't do so well. EMI then cancelled the project. Producer Mark Wirtz continued with it on his own, and a CD of the completed work was finally released in 1996.

Answer: Captain Darling

Blackadder's reply is that the guns have stopped because they are about to attack, and "Not even our generals are mad enough to shell their own men. They think it's far more sporting to let the Germans do it.". Lord Melchett of course was at HQ, well out of reach of the fighting.

Answer: Christopher Timothy

Robert Hardy played the part of James' boss and later partner, Siegfried Farnon. Peter Davidson played the part of Siegfried's younger brother, Tristram. John Alderton played the part of James Herriot in the 1975 film "It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet".

Answer: Aldaniti

Aldaniti was trained by Josh Gifford and his name was derived from the initials of breeder Tommy Barron's grandchildren -Alistair, David, Nicola and Timothy.
5. I've never seen the film "Born Free". There's no need really, a few bars of the theme music gets the tears flowing. Who composed it?

Answer: John Barry

John Barry has won five Academy Awards: two for "Born Free" and one each for "The Lion in Winter", "Out of Africa" and "Dances With Wolves".
6. The 1985 film "Mask" is a positive and inspiring story, but is ultimately very sad. Who played the lead role of Roy "Rocky" Dennis?

Answer: Eric Stoltz

The others co-starred with Eric Stoltz in the 1990 film "The Memphis Belle". "Mask" was based on a true story about a boy born with a severe facial deformity. His mother, a biker played by Cher, is determined that he will lead as normal a life as possible.

Answer: Harry Nilsson

"Midnight Cowboy" was the first (and only) X-rated film to win an Academy Award (in fact it won three - Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay). "Everybody's Talking" won a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and the theme music ("Midnight Cowboy") by John Barry won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Theme.
8. "Ring of Bright Water" is a charming story with a very sad ending. What type of creature is Mij, the central character?

Answer: Otter

I was only a child when I saw the film and the scene where poor Mij gets whacked with a spade left me utterly traumatised. At least in "Old Yeller" there was some warning of what was coming! Incidentally, the beautiful theme song from "Ring of Bright Water" was performed by Val Doonican.
9. Confession time - I've never been that fond of the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's". However, the scene where Holly Golightly lets the cat out of the car and then changes her mind and rushes off to look for it in the pouring rain gets my tear ducts working overtime. What was the cat called?

Answer: Cat

Holly refuses to name the cat on the basis that she doesn't own him and doesn't have the right to name him, so just refers to him as "Cat".

Answer: Ginger

Both Black Beauty and Ginger have come down in the world since they first shared a home together. However, while Black Beauty at this stage has a kindly owner, Ginger has been passed from one cruel owner to another and hasn't been treated very well. Her health, looks and spirit have gone. Shortly after their meeting Black Beauty sees a dead horse being transported on the back of a cart. The horse strongly resembles Ginger, and Black Beauty fervently hopes it is because it means she is no longer suffering.

Thanks for taking this quiz - I'd like to say that I enjoyed writing it but as I'm now a blubbering heap I'm not sure that "enjoyed" is the right word!
