Bob Dylan first recorded "All Along the Watchtower" on November 6, 1967, and the song was released by Columbia Records on December 27. Hendrix recorded his version during the summer of 1968 and released it September 21, 1968. The song reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was admitted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.

"All Along the Watchtower" has been covered by many artists over the last forty years. Some of the most prominent include Richie Havens, The Dave Matthews Band, U2, Neil Young, the Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh and Pearl Jam.

For the record, Hendrix did not write the song, but did do the famous cover of it. Following Hendrix's cover, Dylan would perform it in the style of Hendrix.
"John Wesley Harding" was the name of the Dylan album the song first appeared on and Albert Grossman was Bob Dylan's agent.
