Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Amos Halftrack
Answer: Beetle Bailey
Brigadier General Amos T. Halftrack is the commanding officer of Camp Swampy, which is the setting for the "Beetle Bailey" comic strip. Halftrack is not the brightest of generals, and might well be a better golfer than he is a soldier. He takes orders from his wife, and occasionally pines for his pretty young secretary, Miss Buxley.
"Beetle Bailey", created by Mort Walker, was first published in 1950 and Walker remained involved in its production until his death in 2018. His sons, Neal, Brian and Greg have continued to produce it since then.
The eponymous Private Carl "Beetle" Bailey is a lazy soldier, always trying to avoid any sort of work or drilling. General Halftrack is mostly oblivious to this behaviour.
2. Orville Snorkel
Answer: Beetle Bailey
Sergeant First Class Orville P. Snorkel is Beetle Bailey's main adversary at Camp Swampy, in that he would prefer it if Bailey didn't goof off all the time, and do some work instead. He has been known to beat Beetle into the ground to drive home whatever point he might be trying to make that day. Occasionally, he finds himself at Bailey's mercy, needing the latter's help to avoid falling from a cliff (or a branch extending from it).
He's not really a villain though, and he and Beetle have a love/hate relationship.
3. Otto
Answer: Beetle Bailey
Otto is Sgt. Snorkel's bulldog, who also wears a sergeant's uniform and insignia (since 1958). He walks on his hind legs, is antagonistic to Beetle Bailey, and could be seen as Snorkel's "mini me".
4. Dagwood Bumstead
Answer: Blondie
Dagwood is the titular Blondie's husband. (As a child, I thought the funny was called "Dagwood".) He works for Mr Dithers, likes to nap on the couch, and creates enormous sandwiches for himself. He and Blondie have a son, Alexander, and a daughter named Cookie. He's a bit of a bumbler, often running into the mailman as he dashes off to work.
Cartoonist Chic Young created flapper Blondie Boopadoop first, and Dagwood Bumstead was her rich boyfriend. When they married in 1932, his parents disinherited him and he was forced to go to work. When Chic Young died in 1973, his son Dean took over writing the strip.
5. Herb Woodley
Answer: Blondie
Herb Woodley and his wife Tootsie live next door to Dagwood and Blondie, and are their best friends.
Herb is prone to forgetting to return tools he has borrowed from Dagwood, while Tootsie and Blondie have opened a catering business together, starting in 1991.
Other recurring characters are Alexander and Cookie, son and daughter of Blondie and Dagwood; Cora Dithers, wife of Dagwood's boss; Elmo Tuttle, an annoying neighbour kid.
6. Daisy
Answer: Blondie
Daisy is the Bumstead's dog, of indeterminate breed, who is particularly attached to Dagwood. She is also mother to pups. In the movie series made in the late 1940s, Daisy was played by a spaniel/terrier/poodle mix named Spooks.
7. Jon Arbuckle
Answer: Garfield
Jonathan Q. Arbuckle, to give him his full name, is Garfield the cat's human companion, in charge of supplying Garfield with lasagna (his favourite), pizza and other necessities of life. Jon is not the brightest of people, and Garfield can pretty much run things around their home.
Created by cartoonist Jim Davis, both Garfield and Jon first appear in 1976 in a strip called "Jon", but by 1978 the emphasis has shifted to the feline and the strip becomes "Garfield".
8. Liz Wilson
Answer: Garfield
Dr Liz Wilson is the veterinarian who looks after Garfield and Odie, who has become Jon's girlfriend, somewhat inexplicably! She is tolerant of Jon's shortcomings and also of Garfield's antics.
Other animal characters in the strip, who might need Liz's attention, are Nermal, Jon's parents' cat and Garfield's girlfriend, Arlene (also a cat).
9. Odie
Answer: Garfield
Odie is Jon Arbuckle's dog, and the object of many of Garfield's pranks. This is probably because, like Jon, Odie isn't all that bright. He's a pleasant character though, always seeming to be happy.
10. Sally Brown
Answer: Peanuts
Sally is Charlie Brown's little sister, who has a huge crush on Linus van Pelt, who is oblivious to this. Although Charlie is older, Sally shows him little respect. She made her first appearance in the "Peanuts" funny in August 1959.
The strip created by Charles M. Schulz ran daily from 1950 to 2000, and in Sunday papers from 1952 to 2000, when Schulz died. Since then it has run in syndication, continuing to delight readers.
11. Linus van Pelt
Answer: Peanuts
Linus, known for always carrying his blanket with him, is Lucy's brother and Charlie Brown's best friend. His first appearance is in 1952. He's thoughtful and rather sensitive, unlike his sister and friend.
Charlie Brown and Lucy van Pelt are probably the best known of the "Peanuts" gang, which is why they haven't been presented for you to sort. Probably the best know running gag involving the two is the set up with Lucy holding a football for Charlie Brown to kick...
12. Spike
Answer: Peanuts
Spike is a beagle, brother of Charlie Brown's pet Snoopy. Spike lives in the desert near Needles, California and makes occasional appearances when he visits with Snoopy, having made his first appearance in 1975. Snoopy, of course, is known for day dreaming about fighting the Red Baron, sleeping on top of his doghouse, and being friends with a bird named Woodstock.
13. Jeremy Duncan
Answer: Zits
Jeremy Duncan is the perpetual high school student who is the main character of "Zits". He drives a rather dodgy van, aspires to be a musician and takes on various summer jobs. His mother despairs of the state of his room, while his dad, Walt, is often just bemused. Every so often, Jeremy surprises them both by doing something unexpectedly mature or kind. He is basically a good kid.
Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman write "Zits", which launched in 1997. In that time, Jeremy has aged two years, from 15 to 17.
14. Hector Garcia
Answer: Zits
Hector is Jeremy's best friend, and is a member of the latter's band, along with their other friend Pierce. Hector and Jeremy intend to restore Jeremy's VW van, but talk about it more than they work on it.
Jeremy's mother, Connie Duncan, appears to be friends with Hector's mother, as Jeremy has been seen to school her about texting Mrs Garcia instead of calling her to talk on the phone.
15. Clapton
Answer: Zits
Clapton is Jeremy's cat, adopted by the Duncan family in 2020. She (?) is able to sleep through most things (similar to Jeremy), and is often seen sitting on Jeremy's head.
Other characters include Jeremy's sometimes girlfriend Sara Toomey, who tries her best to tame him a bit, not always successfully.
