Gnasher, who first appeared in 'The Beano' in 1968, is an Abyssinian Wire-Haired Tripehound. He was created by David Law the original artist, with contributions from Ian Grey, who was a writer and dog enthusiast. Gnasher is Dennis's faithful, mischievous sidekick who loves sausages. Renowned for his black, wiry hair and razor-sharp teeth, Gnasher has the strongest teeth in Beanotown.

His name is derived from the British slang term 'gnash', which means to grind one's teeth. Gnasher is the proud father of Gnipper (his son) and his five daughters Gnatasha, Gnaomi, Gnanette, Gnorah and Gnancy.

He remained a popular character up to 1984.

These were always hilariously foiled in some way. The character was originally created by its original artist, T. Bannister and was later written by Roger Kettle. Dick appeared in the comic until 1975.

'The Beezer' character, Colonel Blink, was known as 'the short-sighted gink'. He was a portly, ex-military-style gentleman who was extremely short-sighted. Created by the artist Tom Bannister, he first appeared in 'The Beezer' comic in 1958. His myopia led to extremely funny and chaotic adventures and misunderstandings.

Despite his far-from-perfect eyesight, Colonel Blink was always well-intentioned and completely oblivious to the trouble he caused.

Desperate Dan, who was created by Dudley D. Watkins, first appeared in the debut issue of 'The Dandy' comic in 1937. Dan is a larger-than-life cowboy character who loves to dine on enormous cow pies (complete with horns sticking out) which are baked for him by his Aunt Aggie. Dan, who lives in Cactusville, has enormous strength and can lift cars and bend lampposts.

He uses a blowtorch to shave his tough stubble. Like Minnie the Minx and Dennis the Menace he, too, has a statue in Dundee city centre.

Minnie the Minx, from 'The Beano', was a red-haired, wild tomboy who wore a red and black striped jumper. Created by Leo Baxendale, she first appeared in the comic in 1953. Minnie lived up to her name because she was rebellious and loved to cause chaos, which she called 'minxing'.

She is the cousin of Dennis the Menace. Minnie has a statue in Dundee, Scotland, the city that is the headquarters for D.C. Thompson the publisher of many comics and newspapers.
7. In 'The Beezer' comic, the character Pop had two sons. Can you name them?

The comedy trio Pop, Dick and Harry was created by Tom Bannister for 'The Beezer'. Comic and made its debut in 1956. It ran until 1990. Bannister illustrated the strip until 1981, followed by Peter Moonie and Brian Walker. Pop, the father, a stout, balding man, was the exasperated parent who kept trying to keep his mischievous and rebellious twin sons, Dick and Harry, in line.

Mickey the Monkey was a much-loved character from 'The Topper' comic. He first appeared in the debut issue in 1953 and was on the cover for many years. Mickey was created by Dudley Watkins. Sporting human-like clothing, this playful, mischievous character was clever and resourceful and always up for adventure, which led to his finding himself in humorous situations.

He remained a central figure in the comic until the 1970s.
10. Which 'Beezer' character was always wangling his way out of things?

Answer: Roger the Dodger

Created by the comic artist Ken Reid, Roger the Dodger made his first appearance in 'The Beano' comic in 1953. Roger, with his sly grin and air of self-confidence, was an expert at dodging things he didn't want to do, often consulting his 'Dodging Manual' for tips and inspiration.

His friends and rivals sometimes unwittingly became part of his schemes. His family found themselves exasperated by his antics. One of the longest running characters, he continues to dodge his way through the comic today.
