Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which cartoon strip features ants playing golf, a toothless crocodile, ducks that have to attend flying school, a pair of lazy toads named Mort and Wart, and rats who surf through sewer pipes?

Answer: Swamp

Old Man Croc and his constant, and annoying companion, the Nit-picking bird; Ding Duck, who wears learner-plates to flying school; filthy rats who call the local dump 'home'- 'Swamp' has them all!

Gary Clark, who hails from Brisbane, Queensland, is the author of this very funny strip, which is distributed throughout Australia, New Zealand and parts of Europe.

The three wrong answers are the product of my rather warped imagination.
2. Which comic strip takes its name from a dormant volcano and National Park in New South Wales?

Answer: Warrumbunglers

Warrumbungle National Park is in central New South Wales, about 600 kms north-west of Sydney, and is popular with rock-climbers.

The 'Warrumbunglers' features the Ritz Pie Cart (run by Gunna the goanna) with its totally inedible food, poor swagmen, and clever koalas.
3. Allan Salisbury wrote under the pseudonym 'Sols' and created a couple of comic strips. One was 'Lennie the Loser', but what is the more famous strip, first drawn in 1974?

Answer: Snake Tales

Poor Snake. He is constantly bemoaning the fact that he has no arms or legs and his kangaroo friend does little to cheer him up. Lady Snake also continually torments our little hero with her rather obvious charms.

How would YOU feel if your best friend was a rock?!
4. Which Australian comic strip, originally named "Fat and his Friends", was devised to be a direct competitor to the highly successful "Ginger Meggs" strip?

Answer: Fatty Finn

Hubert Finn, aka Fatty, was quite the multi-media personality, with the "Fatty Finn Weekly", first issued in 1934, being the forerunner of comic books in Australia. He had previously appeared in a movie called "Kid Stakes" in the late 1920s, and another movie, "Fatty Finn" was made in 1980.

Unfortunately, the strip ended with the death of the writer, Syd Nicholls, in 1977.
5. Australians have a habit of adopting (stealing?) anything good that comes from New Zealand- think of Phar Lap and the very talented musicians, Marc Hunter and the Finn brothers. 'Footrot Flats' is a very funny cartoon about a dog's view of farming life in rural New Zealand. The owner of the farm is Wal Footrot, but do you know who Wal's part-time girlfriend is?

Answer: Cheeky Hobson

The Dog is extremely jealous of the attention Wal pays to the painted strumpet and tries to sabotage the relationship at every opportunity- after all, a man's best friend is supposed to be his dog!

Cooch is the owner of the adjoining farm, and Wal's best friend, and Cathy is Cooch's rarely seen cousin. Delores is a rather large pig, and unlikely to be the attention of Wal's dalliances.

A movie based on 'Footrot Flats' was released in 1986, and the theme song from that movie, 'A Slice of Heaven', sung by Dave Dobbins, occupied the Top 40 for many weeks.
6. Which political satirist was known in the 1980s for his 'Playmates' calendars, depicting famous Australians in the nude?

Answer: Larry Pickering

Among Pickering's targets were the leading politicians of the day, and his caricatures were usually shown with greatly exaggerated parts of the body that are usually kept under wraps.
7. Stan Cross drew what has been called the 'funniest Australian cartoon ever' way back in 1933. What was the subject depicted over the tagline 'For gorsake, stop laughing, this is serious!'?

Answer: Two men clinging to a scaffold outside a tall building

One man is hanging from the scaffold, with the other hanging around his waist. The inevitable pull of gravity is gradually taking effect of the lower man, and the other man's trousers. Despite staring death in the face, the bloke is laughing hysterically at the situation.

My rather bland description does not reflect the comedic pull of the cartoon- I guess you have to see it to cop the full impact.
8. Gerard Piper started his career with the 'Brisbane Sun' newspaper in 1983 as a press artist. He left to join Disney TV Australis where he worked on the animated version of the famous "Blinky Bill" movie. In 1996, he created which cartoon about a rather lackadaisical university student whose best friend is Brian?

Answer: Trevor

Tall, skinny and with a shock of orange hair, that clashes delightfully with his customary purple pullover and lime-green pants, 'Trevor' has been successfully exported to Canada, UK, and several other countries.
9. Not all Australian comic strips are centred on bucolic characters or ratbag kids. One young lady is a 'real' outer-space super-heroine. Who is the eponymous head of F.I.P.K.O. (Federation of Intergalactic Peace Keeping Organisation)?

Answer: Staria

Staria heads a motley crew that consists of a cute telepathic creature named Horry, an alcoholic navigator and doctor known as Dr Umbo, and the bird-faced dromad lothario, Kru.

Their adventures take them to all corners of the known universe aboard the ship 'Venus II'.
10. Ginger Meggs is one of Australia's longest running strips, having first appeared in newspapers in the 1920s. His archenemy is Eddie Coogan, and he is constantly being beaten up by Tiger Kelly. Ginger's parents are named John and Sarah, but what is his young brother's name?

Answer: Dudley

Ginger is a lovable ratbag of a kid who hates school, and loves racing his billy-kart down Dead Man's Hill.

Mike is Ginger's dog, Tony is his pet monkey (I wonder how many 10-year-old kids have one of THEM!), and Chubb is one of Ginge's football mates.
