"Bloom County" and Related Strips

Even though its initial run ended before I ever existed, Berkeley Breathed's "Bloom County" is one of my favorite comic strips - I'll test your knowledge of it in this quiz, because that's fun for me. Quiz title by reedy from the Author Challenge page.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Milo Bloom, the de facto protagonist of "Bloom County", lives in a building which is also a place of business owned and operated by his grandparents. What kind of business is it?

Answer: Boarding house

The Bloom County boarding house has always been the primary setting of the strip, though its actual role has changed over time - early on, the house and its eccentric residents were the focus of the strip, while the later years gave way to a smaller cast of people along with the numerous talking animals who inhabit the nearby meadow.
2. In Opus' first appearance in "Bloom County", another character had claimed him as a pet. Who was it that brought him home?

Answer: Michael Binkley

Opus' inaugural appearance in "Bloom County" occurred in 1981 - Binkley brought him home, having confused the penguin for a German Shepherd. Oliver Wendell Jones had not yet appeared in the strip, debuting in 1983.
3. Milo and Opus both have a hand (or wing, as it were) in the production of what newspaper, once called the Bloom Beacon?

Answer: Bloom Picayune

"Picayune" is a fairly archaic English adjective referring to something petty or of little value, derived from the name of a coin. Milo serves as a reporter under the editor, Armand Diphthong, while Opus wears a few different hats, including cartoonist (though he calls himself a "stripper").
4. Despite being a penguin, Opus is frequently told that he looks more like what other flightless bird?

Answer: Puffin

It's true - while in early appearances he had a long, thin beak indicative of the Antarctic waterfowl, his later designs gave him his now-famous schnoz which looks decidedly more like the wide, round beak of a puffin. He's sensitive about it.
5. Milo was the lead guitarist of the band Deathtongue, for which Opus played the tuba.

Answer: False

Opus did play the tuba, but there was no guitarist - Milo helped found the group along with Steve Dallas, who also recruited Bill the Cat on "electric tongue" and Hodge-Podge on the drums. Milo was not personally involved in the band's music.
6. Who was Opus' girlfriend in the late '80s, with a rhyming name and a tattoo of Dan Fogelberg?

Answer: Lola Granola

Lola's hippie-ish, vegetarian lifestyle frequently clashed with Opus' relative conservatism, culminating with an annulment immediately following their wedding on the grounds of "incompatible noses". Twenty years later, Lola would appear in two "Opus" strips which were widely withheld from print due to their controversial political nature.
7. Bobbi Harlow, a character prominently featured in the early years of "Bloom County" as a romantic interest for both Steve Dallas and Cutter John, held what occupation?

Answer: Teacher

Bobbi was Milo and Binkley's teacher in the first few years of the strip, though she had entirely stopped appearing in it by 1984. Years later, it was stated retroactively that she'd gone to work for Phil Donahue.
8. Milo does not appear in any form in "Outland" or "Opus", the sequel strips to "Bloom County".

Answer: False

While he isn't prominently featured in either, he does appear a few times as an extra in "Outland" and in flashbacks in "Opus". He wouldn't properly return to the page until 2015.
9. Berkeley Breathed wrote a children's novel about Opus which was adapted into a TV movie in 1991 - what was it called?

Answer: A Wish for Wings that Work

The TV special, produced by Amblin, starred Michael Bell as Opus and John Byner as Bill the Cat. "Goodnight Opus" is a real book by Berkeley Breathed (and a childhood favorite of mine); "Mars Needs Moms" is a separate Breathed work which was adapted infamously to feature length, and "The Nose Knows" is a fabrication.
10. In his time as a reporter, Milo was known to hassle Senator Bedfellow about the disappearance of what real-world figure?

Answer: Jimmy Hoffa

James Riddle Hoffa, leader for a dozen years of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, disappeared in Michigan in July 1975, and Milo believes Senator Bedfellow may have been responsible. Bedfellow was jailed for smuggling Bill the Cat tote bags on the black market and disappeared from the comic after 1983.
