"Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" was a 1974 film directed by Martin Scorsese about a single mom who ended up as a waitress in Tucson, Arizona. The producers shortened the name, but the TV show "Alice" was directly based on the film. The show, which lasted from 1976 to 1985, had several characters in common with the film, and even one actor: Vic Tayback as Mel, the owner of "Mel's Diner".

Diane Ladd appeared in both the film and TV show, but in different roles.
2. Uncle Buck

John Candy starred in John Hughes's "Uncle Buck" in 1989 as a irritable slob forced to babysit his nieces and nephews. It was very popular, so there were two attempts to turn it into a TV show. First, there was a 1990-91 version that starred Kevin Meaney that only lasted one season. Then there was a 2016 version starring Mike Epps that aired for only eight episodes.
3. The Bad News Bears

Walter Matthau starred in the successful 1976 film about a disinterested coach of a little league baseball team. That film had two sequels and then the original was remade in 2005 with Billy Bob Thornton in the lead role. 4. Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice

The film "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" made quite a stir when it was released in 1969. When two couples went to a therapy retreat, wife-swapping occurred. It didn't last long (only seven episodes), but there was a TV series in 1973.

5. The Addams Family

The Addams Family TV show appeared first, running from 1964 to 1966. It was based on Charles Addams's popular "New Yorker" cartoons and starred John Astin and Carolyn Jones as Gomez and Morticia Addams. The series of films came later, including "The Addams Family" (1991) and "Addams Family Values" (1993), starring Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston in the lead roles. That was followed by "Addams Family Reunion (1998), starring Tim Curry and Darryl Hannah.

There was even a musical play called "The Addams Family" that lasted for 722 performances in 2010 and 2011.
6. Miami Vice

The show came first, lasting from 1984 to 1989. The two leads were Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs. A film based on the same characters was released in 2006. It was directed by Michael Mann, who had created the TV show more than twenty years earlier. In the film, Crockett and Tubbs were portrayed by Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
7. The A-Team

"The A-Team" TV show appeared first, airing from 1983 to 1987. The most memorable members of the cast were George Peppard as Hannibal Smith and Mr. T as B.A. Baracus. Given its popularity, a film with the same name was released in 2010. In that version, Liam Neeson played Hannibal Smith and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson played B.A. Baracus. Bradley Cooper also appeared in the film as a member of the team.
8. The Beverly Hillbillies

"The Beverly Hillbillies" came first and was very popular during its run, 1962 to 1971. In fact, it was the top watched TV show in its first two seasons. The stars were Buddy Ebsen as Jedd Clampett, Irene Ryan as Granny, Donna Douglas as Elly May Clampett, and Max Baer Jr. as Jethro Bodine.

It was followed by a film version released in 1993. The stars in that one were Jim Varney as Jed, Cloris Leachman as Granny, Erika Eleniak as Elly May, and Diedrich Bader as Jethro. A fun character in both the show and the film is the bank secretary Jane Hathaway.

She was played by Nancy Culp on the TV show and Lily Tomlin in the movie.
9. Mary Poppins

There was never a TV show-- just the very popular Disney film that came out in 1964 with Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. There was even a sequel released in 2018 called "Mary Poppins Returns", starring Emily Blunt as Mary. You might also count the 2013 Disney film "Saving Mr. Banks", about the making of the 1964 film. In 2004, a stage musical based on the film premiered.
10. Chariots of Fire

"Chariots of Fire" won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1981, but there was never a TV show based on the film. However, there a stage adaptation in 2012. It ran for a little over a month at the Hampstead Theatre in London, and then for about six months at the Gielgud Theater, also in London. The play was created to coincide with the 2012 Olympics in London.
11. The Goonies

Follow-ups to the popular 1985 film, "The Goonies", have been discussed many times. There was talk about an animated TV series in 2007 and a pilot for a drama series was tested and rejected in 2020 and 2021. There were also lots of discussion about a film sequel, but that project never got off the ground.

The one medium where the legacy continued: video games, where various versions were released in 1986, 2007, and 2017 by different companies.
12. The Nutty Professor

Less likely, you might be aware there was an animated sequel in 2012 and musical play that played in Maine in the summer of 2022.

But you definitely aren't aware of a TV version, because there never was one.
13. The West Wing

The critically acclaimed TV show, "The West Wing", aired from 1999 to 2006. Though it's creator, Aaron Sorkin, has been involved in a lot of prestige film projects since ("The Social Network", "Moneyball", "Steve Jobs", "The Trial of the Chicago 7"), there have been no plans to bring the TV show to the big screen. Several books and podcasts have looked into the success of the show, but it does not appear that the story will continue as a film.

Created by Michael Crichton, "ER" lasted for fifteen seasons (1994 through 2009). Many great actors appeared on the show over the years, but the most famous is no doubt George Clooney. Clooney was a regular for the first five seasons, and a "special guest" in seasons 6 and 15. But, nope, it was never made into a movie--apparently 331 episodes told all the story that could be told.
15. My Three Sons

Fred MacMurray starred in this sitcom about a single dad trying to raising three boys. It premiered in 1960 and lasted until 1973. McMurray played Steve Douglas, and he was assisted by a elderly live-in male relative-- first William Frawley as Uncle Bub and then William Demerest as Uncle Charley. Unlike many other '60s sitcoms, it was never made into a movie.
