Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Good-looking

Answer: Handsome

The word 'handsome' is used to describe someone or even an animal who is attractive to look at and, particularly for humans, the word is normally used for males. For example, cartoon heroes, such as Prince Philip in the Disney cartoon movie 'Sleeping Beauty', are shown as handsome young men. Less commonly, 'handsome' can also mean 'generous' if used to describe an action, for example 'it was handsome of you to give a lot of money to that charity'.
2. Tiring, boring

Answer: Wearisome

The word 'wearisome' can be used to describe something that makes the doer feel bored; for instance, having to do all the family's washing up can be a wearisome job. 'Wearisome' can also mean 'tiring'; for example, a journey that lasts for many hours can become wearisome. If families are travelling together this may lead to the question 'Are we there yet?' being repeatedly asked by tired younger people, which the adults may find wearisome too.
3. Scary, frightening

Answer: Fearsome

'Fearsome' refers to someone or something that makes someone feel scared or even terrified. As an example, in the fairy tale 'Jack and the Beanstalk', Jack climbed a high beanstalk and met an unfriendly, person-eating giant who seemed fearsome to him. Awful weather, such as a very bad thunderstorm or a tornado, can also be be described as 'frightening' or 'fearsome'.
4. Argumentative

Answer: Quarrelsome

People who are quarrelsome are inclined to argue or disagree with another person, often for the sake of it, instead of talking calmly and coming to understand each other's point of view. Some fictional characters who can be quarrelsome include Grumpy in the fairy tale 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' and Grouchy Smurf in the comics and cartoons about the little blue Smurfs.
5. Amazing, impressive

Answer: Awesome

'Awesome' is a word often used to describe someone who is especially talented or who has done something really remarkable. Two men who were really awesome were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who were the first people to climb to the top of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain.

The word can also be used to describe something; for instance, in the sentence 'the Southern Lights are an awesome sight'.
6. Interfering

Answer: Meddlesome

To meddle in something, such as someone else's business, is to interfere in it or to become involved in it when you are not wanted. Someone who does this may be described as a meddlesome person. The word can be used in phrases such as 'a meddlesome nuisance' or in sentences like 'our meddlesome neighbour keeps butting in to our conversations when we talk outdoors'.
7. Nasty, unpleasant

Answer: Loathsome

A loathsome person is someone who other people often find unpleasant because that person, for instance, either says nasty things about others or acts unkindly towards them. Some examples of people felt to be loathsome can be those who make up untrue stories about others, who are cruel to children or who vandalise other peoples' things. An animal or an object can also be called 'loathsome'; for instance, snakes by those who are scared of them or a nasty smell coming from a factory by people living nearby.
8. Playful

Answer: Frolicsome

Although adults can be describe as 'frolicsome', the word is generally used for young people or animals and refers to those who appear happy and lively and seem ready to play. It is often used to describe lambs who gambol or frolic in the fields, while puppies and kittens too are generally considered frolicsome because they love to play with toys or humans.
9. Quartet of people

Answer: Foursome

Words made up of numbers followed by 'some' can be used to describe groups of people, for instance the words 'twosome', 'threesome' and 'foursome' refer to a group of two, three and four people. It is not unusual for a group of four people to make up a foursome when they play a sport, such as friends who play golf or tennis together. Or two couples can form a foursome to go out socially or go on holiday together.
10. Healthy, good for you

Answer: Wholesome

Something that is wholesome is believed likely to do people good, whether it is a type of food or entertainment or other things. As an example, a wholesome diet includes a variety of fruit and vegetables, as well as not too many chocolates and other sweets. Movies made for children, for instance Disney ones, are usually wholesome, as they often end with the good characters winning something they want and the bad ones suffering.
