Snakes and Ladders date back to the 1890s. It was created in India. The game is a race between players to get to the finishing square on the board. They throw a die and move their counter the number of squares that the die throw amounts to. Depending on luck, they may land on a snake and have to slide down it or on a ladder that they climb to take them higher up the board towards the end square of the game. Whoever gets to the top first wins.

In the UK, the game has chutes (like a playground slide) instead of snakes, and is called Chutes and Ladders.

It entails the use of pieces of different colours which are shaped like gingerbread men. To play it, you need a special deck of cards, a spinner and one gingerbread man for each player.
