Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The creature has two legs. Which of the following is it likely to be?

Answer: Human

Humans have two legs, dogs have four, grasshoppers six and spiders eight.
2. Having landed, I find myself on the largest organ in this animal's body - it's mostly smooth and covers the whole body. What is it?

Answer: skin

An organ is made up of different kinds of cells working together. The skin is the largest; it keeps out germs and keeps in moisture.
3. Although where I've landed seems solid, it has many small holes in it that allow some moisture to escape. What are these holes called?

Answer: pores

Although all these choices sound the same, the correct spelling for the tiny holes is 'pores'. Paws are found on dogs etc. Pause means to wait a while and pours is used as in 'He pours the tea'.
4. Pressing the Shrinko button on my console, I reduce my spacecraft so I can fit through one of these holes. Yuk! I find myself being swept along in a red liquid. What is it?

Answer: blood

I have entered the bloodstream which carries oxygen and nutrients to all the body cells. Plasma is the clear part of the blood. Sweat, or perspiration, carries impurities out of the body through the pores. Tears come from the eye sockets when we cry.
5. The vessel I am in now is a capillary. I soon join a larger vessel returning to headquarters. What is this vessel called?

Answer: vein

Veins carry the blood back to headquarters while arteries carry it away.
6. Arriving at headquarters, which is pumping away very busily, and gasping for oxygen, I spend a short time here. Where am I?

Answer: heart

The heart is the organ that pumps blood around the body and receives it back. It is situated slightly to the left of centre of the chest. The kidney, one of two, is located in the lower back. The liver lies in the abdomen. The brain is found in the cranium (skull).
7. I now make a short detour to a a pair of large sacs containing air before continuing on my journey around the body. What is my destination?

Answer: lungs

The blood arrives at the heart in one of the four heart chambers (right atrium). It leaves for the lungs through the right ventricle, where carbon dioxide is lost and oxygen picked up. (Phew! That's better.) The useless (to humans) appendix is found in the intestines.
8. Feeling refreshed, I travel back to the left atrium and leave again through the left ventricle. A lot of blood leaves here through the largest artery in the body. What is this artery?

Answer: aorta

The aorta, located at the top of the heart is the largest artery. The pulmonary artery carries the blood from heart to lungs and the pulmonary vein makes the return journey.
9. This artery branches out to smaller and smaller arteries carrying oxygen around the body. One branch carries blood (and me) to the most important organ, which controls all of the body. Which is this?

Answer: brain

The brain needs a constant supply of blood and without it, we would die within minutes. The spleen is found near the stomach and is not really vital. The appendix is so useless to us that it is often removed if it becomes inflamed. The liver is an important organ but not as vital as the brain.
10. Which of the body's systems, covered by many questions in this quiz, is concerned with the behaviour and function of the liquid which has carried me around the body?

Answer: circulatory

The circulatory system circulates (spreads) blood around the body. The digestive system is concerned with the breaking down of food for the body's use. The respiratory system involves the interchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs. The nervous system is concerned with the brain and nerves.
