Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story centers around a family. What is their name?

Answer: Campbell

The story covers the lives of the Campbell cousins and their parents. Family troubles do abound, but don't they still!
2. How long a period does the action of the book cover?

Answer: One Year

It is a one year trial period for Rose to decide with whom she wishes to live. Her guardian wants her to be happy with whom ever she has to live with, not just have to stay somewhere because her dad thought she might be happy there. Towards the end, she even spends time visiting each aunt's house to help her make her choice.
3. How many of the cousins are boys?

Answer: Seven

There are eight but Rose is the only girl so there are seven boys. Good thing for her they were cousins and not brothers!
4. Who is Rose's best friend? (The one that is her age.)

Answer: Phebe

Phebe worked in the kitchen but Rose adopted her in the beginning of the book. They remain friends all the way through the sequel too. Note, Annabel and Kitty were also friends, but Sally's just a name I choose from another Louisa May Alcott book.
5. Which one of the cousins belonged to Aunt Clara?

Answer: Charlie

Charlie was Aunt Clara's only child, and rather used to getting his way. His father lived in India, which left Aunt Clara and Charlie to dote on each other.
6. Who was Rose's guardian?

Answer: Uncle Alec

At the end of the book, Rose is given a choice of who her guardian will be, and who else would she choose?
7. What does Rose's guardian believe are bad for a young girl's health?

Answer: Lack of exercise and restrictive clothing

Uncle Alec really didn't mind that the aunts disapproved of his way of raising Rose. He was rather forward in his thinking, a reflection of the author's upbringing, no doubt.
8. Which cousin was the bookish one?

Answer: Mac

Mac was the quiet thinker of the book, apt to surprise you with his observations on people. He wore glasses, as most bookish people do, and just maybe that's why he's my favorite.
9. Which cousin was the oldest?

Answer: Archie

The order of the cousins age-wise are as follows: Archie, the leader of the clan, as they are called, Charlie, the more self-centered one but he does try to be kind, Mac, see question #8 extra information, Steve, also called Dandy (that says it all!), Will and George (eleven and twelve), and Jamie, the sweet one who never quite learns the art of not saying the wrong thing or how not to give away a secret.
10. Which of these did not belong to Aunt Jessie?

Answer: Steve

Aunt Jessie had four of the eight cousins. Interesting bit of trivia! I hope you have enjoyed this quiz, and that you maybe even learned something. I love this book, pretty hard to guess I know, but I think that we can all use a little encouragement sometimes in dealing with family, especially extended family, and learning that though we may not know why something is certain way we can be fairly certain there is a reason. Wasn't Uncle Alec always right? :)
