Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This character turns down a marriage proposal in "Little Women", breaking the heart of a very close friend; later, she runs a school for boys from a big old house she inherited. Who is she?

Answer: Josephine March Bhaer

Josephine ("Jo") is the second oldest of the four March sisters. In "Little Women", her best friend Theodore Laurence ("Laurie", or "Teddy" as only Jo calls him) proclaims his love for her and asks her to marry him, but Jo turns him down. His heart is indeed broken, but not forever, as we learn before the end of the book. Jo goes on to marry another and starts a boy's school at Plumfield, bequeathed to Jo in her aunt's will.
2. The character is a twin! In young adulthood, this character starts out to be a reporter but changes course and goes into publishing instead.

Answer: John "Demi" Brooke

Demi, as he is nicknamed, is the son of John and Meg Brooke and brother to Margaret ("Daisy") and Josie. His mother disapproved of his becoming a reporter, and his aunt Jo finds him an entry-level job in a publishing house; Demi and his mother are both happy with that!
3. This character is first seen in "Little Men"; he is a teenaged orphan, very troubled and troublesome, but with strong values that he's not afraid to take a stand to uphold. He ultimately loses his life in a noble cause, as a young adult.

Answer: Dan Kean

Dan leads a knockabout life, and does not do well with rules and regulations. He fights a lot with others, but is true to his values and true to his friends. He is Mrs. Jo's favorite of the boys in the school although she worries, prophetically, that his headstrong ways will get him in trouble with the law. Dan is killed out West fighting for a tribe of Native Americans.
4. This tender-hearted musician is seen in two of the books. He ardently loves a young girl whose mother frowns on the match. Who is he?

Answer: Nathaniel Blake

Nathaniel Blake, or Nate, is found by Mr. Laurence subsisting in a basement and brought to Plumfield. A gifted violinist, he blossoms under the care of the Bhaer family and does well in his new surroundings. It is he who introduces Dan to Plumfield. As he grows up, Nate falls in love with Daisy Brooke, who returns his affection, but Mama Meg has grave doubts about the match!
5. An exception to the rule, one girl is permitted to enter Plumfield. She is strongminded and independent, and she grows up to study medicine. What is her name?

Answer: Nan Harding

Nan comes to Plumfield following her mother's death. She is a little bit wild, and announces early on that she wants to be a doctor and not have a family--VERY unusual for a girl in the late 1800s, when the story takes place. Nan sticks to her guns, and does indeed become a doctor (not married) when she grows up.
6. This character appears in all three books, although in the first he is absent for a long time, coming into the story after being wounded in war. In later books he plays a background role, serving as mentor to the students.

Answer: Mr. March

Mr. March is a minister who served in the Civil War as a chaplain to Union soldiers. He comes home to convalesce after being wounded.
7. The character of Amy March is found in all three books. Which of the descriptions below best depicts her?

Answer: Artistic, a bit vain, desires to be rich

Amy is the youngest of the March sisters. She is described as having golden hair and blue eyes, and she appears quite taken with her own charms! Amy is artistic; she is seen painting and sculpting, but the impression is given that she is not overly gifted as an artist.

The characters in the books were drawn from actual people in Louisa's life, and the sister on whom Amy was modeled died at the young age of 39. According to Alcott's writings, Amy's character doesn't have much of a part in the later books because the real "Amy" was gone.
8. One pair of characters listed below enjoyed a special bond in the books - which pair?

Answer: Teddy Bhaer and Dan Kean

From the moment he first sees Dan, Teddy, the Bhaer's younger son, is enthralled. Although Teddy is only two when they meet, he christens Dan "My Danny", and loves being with the rough older boy. Dan, for his part, has a distinct soft spot for Teddy. Teddy's adoration of Dan continues into Dan's adulthood.

Of the other three pairs, there are no enemies among them, but no unusual closeness, either.
9. One of the March girls is a talented actress who later has a child also bitten by the acting bug. Which sister has a flair for the stage, and who is the child who carried it on?

Answer: Meg and her daughter Josie

Meg was stage-struck in her youth, although she never pursued acting as a vocation. Her youngest child, Josie, also wants to be an actress, and does go on to make it a career. Of the others, Jo is a writer; Beth dies in her teens of complications from scarlet fever, having no children; and Amy is a painter and sculptor, not an actress.
10. One character is a tutor of another character, marries a March girl, and dies before their children are grown. Who?

Answer: John Brooke

John Brooke is a poor but steady man, Laurie's tutor (no easy job, that - Laurie was a handful in his youth!). John becomes smitten with young Meg and they marry, having first twins Demi and Daisy, then another girl, Josie. John Brooke is described as having died young in the books--the real-life man who was the model for the character died after ten years of marriage to Louisa's elder sister.
