Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nagini
Answer: Snake
Voldemort's companion and later horcrux, Nagini, is often used to kill some of his enemies by biting and then eating them. One of Nagini's most notable victims was Severus Snape, even though Voldemort had not yet realized that Snape had betrayed him for Dumbledore.
He simply killed him because he believed it was the best way to become Master of the Elder Wand. Nagini is decapitated and killed by Neville Longbottom, using the Sword of Gryffindor.
2. Hedwig
Answer: Owl
Harry receives Hedwig as a birthday present from Hagrid in Diagon Alley even before he makes it to Hogwarts. She is a snowy owl who keeps Harry company during his lonely summers at the Dursleys. In the "Harry Potter" universe, owls are used to deliver letters from magical people to one another.
3. Buckbeak
Answer: Hippogriff
Hippogriffs are legendary creatures from Greek mythology - they have the front half of an eagle and the back half of a horse. Buckbeak was a hippogriff introduced to the Care of Magical Creatures class in his very first stint as professor. However, due to a run-in with Draco Malfoy, the creature was to be executed by the Ministry for Magic. Using the time-turner, however, Harry and Hermione were able to rescue the hippogriff and save Sirius Black's life by allowing him to fly away on Buckbeak's back.
4. Fluffy
Answer: Three-headed Dog
Hagrid's delusion about his very dangerous creatures is rarely as obvious as with Fluffy, a large, three headed dog based on the Greek Cerberus, who guards the gates of hell. Fluffy, in this case, guards the trapdoor leading to the tests that protect the Philosopher's Stone in the first book.
5. Fawkes
Answer: Phoenix
A phoenix is a bird from Ancient Greek folklore, though it has similar analogies and origins in Egyptian and Persian mythology. A phoenix is an immortal bird that ignites upon its "death", but is reborn from the ashes. Fawkes is Dumbledore's trusty pet phoenix who is the namesake for the "Order of the Phoenix", the organization that is tasked with defeating Voldemort. Fawkes leaves Hogwarts forever after singing a long lament to mourn its master's death after Dumbledore is killed by Snape.
6. Norbert(a)
Answer: Dragon
Hagrid's love for dangerous creatures is again highlighted when he receives a baby dragon that he calls Norbert. Unknown to him, Norbert is a female, and is later named Norberta by her handlers, as referenced by Charlie Weasley, who works with dragons in Romania. He was the one who took "Nobert" off Hagrid's hand after "he" was becoming too big to handle.
7. Firenze
Answer: Centaur
Centaurs are half-horses, half-men and originate from Greek mythology. Firenze, Bane, and Ronan are three centaurs that Harry meets in the Forbidden Forest. They are a proud people and take particular offense to being insulted or degraded by humans, and consider themselves a superior species to human.
When Firenze decided to teach Divination, replacing Professor Trelawney, he was banished from his own tribe.
8. Aragog
Answer: Acromantula
Hagrid hatched Aragog from an egg and he was subsequently framed for being the one who opened the Chamber of Secrets and murdered Moaning Myrtle, even though it was Tom Riddle with his basilisk. Aragog is an aggressive acromantula who decides to kill Ron and Harry, although they manage to escape.
He dies in "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" and Hagrid is very distraught over his death.
9. Griphook
Answer: Goblin
In the "Harry Potter" universe, goblins are small humanoids with excellent blacksmithing skills that run the Wizarding Bank, Gringotts. Griphook is the goblin that leads Harry and Hagrid to his vault, where he discovers that his parents left him a tremendous amount of wealth. Goblins, like centaurs, are very proud creatures and consider themselves to be oppressed by wizards.
10. Winky
Answer: House elf
House elves in "Harry Potter" are effectively slaves for very rich wizarding families. As a species, they embrace their enslavement for the most part, and they can only be released if given clothes by their masters. Dobby, the most prominent house elf in the series, actually wants to be free, and he is heavily indebted to Harry after he tricks Dobby's master, Lucius Malfoy, into releasing him by giving him a sock. Winky is Barty Crouch's house elf and she is freed, against her will, by her master, after she irresponsibly allows his son, Barty Crouch Jr., to escape and release the Dark Mark over the wizarding camp following the Quidditch World Cup.
She is then given a job at Hogwarts, where she is utterly miserable following her dismissal from her family.
