Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Traffic cone
Traffic cones are used to warn people of a hazard ahead and to block or divert traffic away from the hazard. Modern traffic cones are made of plastic and often have a weight at the bottom to stop them from moving around on windy days or if traffic gets too close to them.
2. Pumpkin
A pumpkin is a type of vegetable belonging to the squash family. Pumpkins have a tough outer surface and on the inside there is pulp and seeds, both of which can be eaten. The pulp from pumpkins is often made into a custard and baked in a pumpkin pie. At Halloween it is traditional to create jack-o'-lanterns out of pumpkins by carving spooky faces into them.
3. Orange juice
Orange juice is a drink made by squeezing the fruit oranges to get their juice. Orange juice contains lots of vitamin C and is often drunk at breakfast time. Orange juice can include small pieces of orange called pulp in the US or can come in a smooth version with these bits removed.
4. Clownfish
Clownfish are a type of fish that live in warm water areas of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They are often thought of as being orange and white in colour; however, there are actually many different species of clownfish - some of which are differently coloured. The characters Nemo and Marlin in the movies 'Finding Nemo' and 'Finding Dory' are clownfish.
5. Lifebuoy
A lifebuoy, which can also sometimes be called a life ring, is a device designed to help someone who is in difficulty in water. The lifebuoy is designed to float in water and to support the weight of a person to stop them sinking. A rope is usually attached to the lifebuoy so that the person in difficulty can be pulled to safety by a rescuer. Lifebuoys are commonly found on boats and in public places near bodies of water.
6. Basketball
Basketball is a sport in which players have to score points by throwing a ball through a raised net called a basket. Basketballs are usually made from rubber and inflated with air. Traditionally basketballs are orange and black in colour but it is possible to find them in other colours too.
There are different sizes of basketball with different diameters and weights which are used by different groups of players; for example, junior players use a smaller, lighter ball than professional male players.
7. Carrots
Carrots are a type of root vegetable, meaning the part we eat grows under the ground. Humans first started growing carrots for their seeds and leaves and only later started to eat the root part that we enjoy today. Originally carrots came in many colours including white and purple until Dutch farmers developed the orange variety we know today.
8. Orangutan
Orangutans live in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in the countries of Indonesia and Malaysia in southeast Asia. Orangutans are a type of great ape, so are in the same family as gorillas, chimpanzees and humans! Orangutans are an endangered species.
This is due to the number of orangutans living in the wild falling as the rainforests they live in have been destroyed for logging and growing crops.
9. Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes are a vegetable with a rough outer skin and a usually orange coloured inner flesh. Even though it is called a potato, sweet potatoes are a different type of plant to that from which normal potatoes grow. Sweet potatoes are sometimes called yams in North America, however this is not technically correct as they are not a member of the same plant family that produce vegetables classed as yams.
10. Monarch butterfly
The monarch butterfly is a bright orange coloured butterfly found in the Americas and parts of Oceania. The butterfly is said to be called 'monarch' after King William III of England who was also known as the Prince of Orange. A number of states in the USA have the monarch butterfly as their official state insect.
