Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How was Lorna told that she was about to acquire two stepsisters?

Answer: In a letter from one of the new stepsisters.

Lorna is summoned to the Headmistress, and asked why she has been sent a letter at school. Rosemary has written a letter to welcome Lorna to the family, but only knew the school address, so couldn't send it to her home.
2. Why isn't Kit at home when Mrs. Arnold arrives with Rosemary and Marigold?

Answer: She is studying at Oxford.

Kit left school at the end of the summer term, and is in her first year reading for a degree at Oxford.
3. After their tests, in which forms are Rosemary and Marigold placed?

Answer: Rosemary in Upper Third and Marigold in Lower Second.

Although Rosemary is a little older than Lorna, she has learnt very little mathematics, so she is placed in a lower form than Lorna, who is in Lower Fourth. Marigold at thirteen is younger than both the other girls, but appears to have learnt very little from her succession of governesses, so she is placed in a class of ten year olds.
4. On their first morning at Wynyards, where do Mrs. Arnold and Lorna take Rosemary and Marigold for coffee?

Answer: The Golden Cockerel.

Rosemary and Marigold arrive at half-term, and coffee at the Golden Cockerel is one of Lorna's usual half-term treats. The rest of half-term is spent in obtaining uniforms at Evesham, buying bicycles in Oxford, and a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon.
5. How does Marigold spend the first afternoon at her new school?

Answer: Studying arithmetic in the Headmistress' room.

After a disgraceful performance in class during the morning, Miss Grace takes Marigold to the study, and makes her stay until she has completed ten sums correctly. Marigold doesn't finish until half an hour after everyone else has gone home.
6. What triggers the fight between Lorna and Marigold about a week after the latter arrives at Wynyards?

Answer: Marigold read the letter which Lorna was writing.

Marigold looked over Lorna's shoulder while she was writing a letter to her cousin, Kit. Marigold didn't like what Lorna had written about her, and called her a 'Selfish pig'. Lorna accused Marigold of being dishonourable, and Marigold started having a screaming fit on the floor.

She bit her sister's hand, when Rosemary tried to quieten her; and woke Mrs. Arnold, who was sleeping off a headache.
7. What happens when Marigold practises riding her new bicycle?

Answer: She brakes too sharply, and goes over the handlebars.

Marigold has finished school earlier than Lorna and Rosemary, so she is allowed to take her bicycle up to the new road to practise riding it. She is told that she must not try riding down the steep hill back home, but she thinks she is doing really well, and doesn't stop at the corner; then she is frightened by the speed, and brakes too sharply.
8. What injuries does Marigold sustain when she has her bicycle accident?

Answer: She bruises her spine.

Marigold had sat down hard when she came off her bicycle, and inflammation has set in around the bruised spine. She will be in a plaster cast for several weeks, to keep her immobilised. The doctor insists on Marigold being taken to the Cottage Hospital, so that Mrs. Arnold doesn't have the strain of nursing a very spoilt child.
9. Why can't Rosemary see her sister as often as she would like after the accident?

Answer: Marigold is in hospital, and the weather is too bad for anyone to get there.

Dr. Russell, who is an old friend of Mr. Arnold, knows that Nurse and Matron at the hospital will be better able to make Marigold control herself than anyone else. He doesn't want Mrs. Arnold to tire herself out trying to look after the girl.
10. Why did Miss Grace close the school for over a week?

Answer: The snow was too bad for anyone to get there.

The thick fog, which had made it difficult for many girls to get to school after Marigold's accident, was followed by several violent snowstorms.
11. What happens at school at the end of term?

Answer: A carol concert with recitations.

The concert was highly successful, and over £20 was raised for the Shipwrecked Mariners and Dr. Barnado's funds.
12. How does Marigold abbreviate her sister's name?

Answer: Roses.

Marigold frequently calls her sister "Roses". Rosemary often uses "Mari" to her sister in return.
13. Who, unexpectedly, spends Christmas Day at Lambcote?

Answer: Mrs. Monty.

Mrs. Monty was going to her sister's, but the children have caught mumps, so she can't go; instead she helps cook the Christmas dinner. The Altons are expected to tea on Christmas day, but they can't come, because it is snowing too heavily. The snow also means that Mrs. Monty has to stay the night.
Mr. Arnold has been dead for several years.
Mr. Corbett and Mrs. Carey (who has recently married him) are both in Madeira.
14. What is Mrs. Arnold's best Christmas present?

Answer: Lorna accepts her new stepsisters without any reservations.

After many trials, Lorna is as willing to welcome Marigold into the family as Rosemary. She tells Mrs. Arnold that she won't mind if her stepsisters use "Auntie Kath" when speaking to her aunt, as her mother had somewhat precipitately told them they should. Until that time, Lorna had felt that it was inappropriate, since Mrs. Arnold was not any real relation of Rosemary and Marigold.
15. How many books, altogether, did Elinor M. Brent-Dyer write about Lorna and Wynyards?

Answer: Two.

Elinor M. Brent-Dyer only wrote two books about Lorna and Wynyards, to the disappointment of some of her fans. Apart from the very long, and probably best known, Chalet School series, EBD also wrote two shorter series ( La Rochelle and Chudleigh Hold) and two other pairs of books (Janeways and Skelton Hall), as well as twenty other books.
