Answer: John Charles Maynard

Charles, the fifth Maynard child and the second boy in the family, is not named after Jack, but was actually given the name Charles because it is Joey's favourite boys' name. Richard is the name of Joey's father and brother (Dick for short), Kevin is one of Madge's twin sons, and 'Green' was jokingly suggested by Jack as a middle name for Stephen, his firstborn son, when Joey accidentally dyed her hands green.

Answer: Dorothy Brentham

Dorothy first appears as a new junior middle in "The Rivals of the Chalet School", and she is mentioned periodically throughout the rest of the Austrian books. Her final appearance is as a fifth former in "The Chalet School Goes to It" ("The Chalet School at War"). She and her form mates discuss their future careers, and Dorothy says that she intends to become a surgeon, and as she is an only child her doctor father will pay for her training.

'The Youngest Shepherd' is the first of many Christmas plays written by Madge. It is performed in English, albeit with multilingual carols, and tells the story of the Nativity. Joey Bettany plays the titular character, Luigia di Ferrara and Wanda von Eschenau are Mary and Joseph, and the Robin - the youngest girl in the school - is a cherub. At the Margaret Roper School, Elinor M Brent-Dyer's short-lived school in real life, the girls performed the play, though it is unknown whether they did the same version as the one in the book. ('The Smallest Angel', incidentally, is a real Christmas play about angels looking for a place for Jesus to be born. I was a narrator in it when we did it at infant school.)

In order, the four Bettany and Russell Head Girls were Peggy Bettany, Bride Bettany, Josette Russell and Maeve Bettany. Peggy and Bride were Head Girls in the St Briavel's years, later moving on to St Mildred's, and Josette and Maeve were Head Girls in the Swiss years. The only other families with sisters becoming Head Girls are the Lucys (Julie and Betsy in the Swiss years) and the Maranis (Gisela, the first Head Girl when the school was established in Tyrol, and Maria during the short period in Guernsey). Joey Bettany and Len Maynard are the only mother-and-daughter pair to be Head Girls. Although Sybil Russell was a prefect, she was never chosen as Head Girl. As for the younger ones, Ailie Russell is in the Fifth Form at the time of 'Prefects of the Chalet School', the final book in the series, while Daphne Bettany is a Junior, and the series ended before either of them could have been promoted (though the idea of mischievous little Ailie being Head Girl is an entertaining one).

Armishire is located on the Welsh border, hence the many Welsh-speaking characters. The school moves to Plas Howell, a large house belonging to the Howell family, in Armishire in 'The Chalet School Goes to It', and remain there until a problem with the drains forces them to move in 'The Chalet School and the Island'. Gwensi Howell, whose brother owns the house, becomes a pupil at the Chalet School.

Or, to be precise, an 'omelette aux fines herbes', an omelette using a herb mixture, usually parsley, tarragon, chervil and chives. Joey is ill, and Simone makes the omelette to calm Joey down after she and a couple of other girls accidentally fish what they think is a dead body out of a lake. It turns out to be an artist's dummy.

As well as games, Miss Marjorie Durrant also teaches country and folk dancing, and gives the girls a session in 'Jo of the Chalet School'. She has played hockey for her county, and coaches the girls with cricket. During the war years, she returns to the school to teach. By then, she is a widow, her husband having died at sea, and has also lost her young daughter in an air raid.

Gisela was the oldest of the four, at sixteen; Bernhilda was fifteen, and the other two were only fourteen. Madge Bettany, the School's founder and first Head Mistress, would have preferred an English girl but her sister, Joey (aged twelve), was far too young, and Grizel Cochrane was too irresponsible. Gisela served four terms as Head Girl, and set the standard for others to follow. Gisela is Head Girl in both "The School at the Chalet" and "Jo of the Chalet School".

Grizel Cochrane was an unhappy pupil when she arrived at the Chalet School. Her mother had died, and her father's new wife treated her badly. As a result, she had problems settling in at the school. When she was punished for her prank, she ran away and decided to climb the Tiernjoch, a local mountain known to be dangerous. Fortunately, Joey figured out where Grizel had gone and went after her, and both were saved.

Simone was very homesick, and wanted Joey to be her only friend. Joey insisted she would have as many friends as she liked, but didn't mind being pally with Simone. When Joey told everybody about two new girls who would be coming to the Chalet next term from her old home in England, Simone thought Joey would love her more if she had short hair, like Joey's, instead of a long pigtail. Juliet persuaded Grizel, Anita, Sophie and Suzanne to join her one Saturday morning so that Mr. Eades could film them for the movie about "Life in the Austrian Tirol", despite Miss Bettany having forbidden the filming of her pupils. Herr Mensch was taking Joey and Simone out with Bernhilda and Frieda; they saw what was happening, and he interfered and sent Anita, Sophie and Suzanne home, while he took Grizel on with the other girls. There was a severe thunderstorm when everybody was having a picnic on the Mondscheinspitze to celebrate Miss Bettany's birthday. Simone and Amy Stevens were both frightened, but the whole party took shelter in the herdsmen's hut overnight before returning to Briesau the following morning after the storm had died down. Grizel ran away to climb the Tiernjoch near the end of term. She didn't get lost, but did get trapped in the mist which came down. Joey found her, but Grizel was too scared to move because they were on a precipice. They were rescued by Herr Marani and Herr Mensch, but Grizel was ill with bronchitis, and it was feared that Joey might have brain fever. Happily, both girls made a full recovery.
