Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first part of "Vespers Rising" takes place in the year 1507, and tells the story of Gideon Cahill and the discovery of the serum that enhanced his children Luke, Katherine, Thomas and Jane (the founders of the four branches of the Cahill family). What is the name of the ruthless Lord Vesper whose primary goal is to conquer the world?

Answer: Damien

Vesper had been taken in by the Cahills on their small island home in the Irish Sea because of the plague sweeping Europe. All of the lands visible from the island had been under Vesper control for centuries, but the Cahill island was not part of the Vesper holdings. Gideon had invited Lord Vesper to take refuge there out of friendship.
2. Who is Lord Vesper's spy in the Cahill household who tells him of the completion of the serum?

Answer: Maria (the housekeeper)

Maria had spied on the Cahills for Lord Vesper for years, and she informed him of the change that had come over Gideon: "He's made something in that evil laboratory of his, m'lord. Sick for a while, he was. But now he's changed - turned stronger, quicker, even his hearing is uncanny! I heard him talking to himself about a formula, a concoction.

He's taken to witchcraft, I fear. M'lord, it's not natural, the things I seen him do!"
3. After the death of Gideon and the departure of Luke, Thomas, Katherine and Jane, Lord Vesper comes to Olivia to offer his 'condolences.' When the ring on Gideon's finger catches his eye, Olivia responds, "Do you want it my lord? My wedding token to Gideon? Would you deprive me of that, too? Go on, then. Take it!" Does he take the ring?

Answer: No

"Vesper's lip curled. He stepped away, immediately losing interest. As Olivia had hoped: Anything freely given couldn't be worth much to a man like Vesper."

Olivia's gamble worked. She would be able to protect the special ring from Lord Vesper, and the potentially world-changing knowledge that it could bring.
4. Nineteen years following the events that broke the Cahill family apart, Olivia and her daughter Madeleine are in hiding, having taken the name Babbitt to hide their Cahill roots. Unfortunately, Lord Vesper finds them, and Olivia sacrifices herself to save Madeleine and the ring, but not before reminding Maddy of the three promises she had made. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: Do not reveal yourself to your brothers and sisters.

Lord Vesper did not know of Madeleine's existence when he hunted down her mother. His chase for the enigmatic ring might have ended there, but Maddy inadvertently revealed herself when Vesper caught sight of her and a flash of light from the ring as she watched her mother's funeral from a distance.
5. Making her way to London, Madeleine finds her eldest brother Luke in service to the reigning monarch. Who is the king whose daughter Luke hopes to wed to his son Winthrop?

Answer: Henry VIII

Madeleine tried to tell Luke who she was, and at first it seemed as though Luke believed her, but then he explained that she could only be a Vesper spy and he proceeded to order that she be executed. Managing to escape both Luke and Lord Vesper, Maddy resolved from then on to work from the shadows to fulfill the promises that she made to her mother. "Beware the Madrigal"
6. The third part of "Vespers Rising" brings us to 1942 and a 13-year-old Grace Cahill. Where is Grace living at the beginning of her story?

Answer: Monte Carlo

Grace and her older sister Beatrice lived on their own with their younger brother Fiske (and household staff). Their father had abandoned them soon after the death of their mother, who had died while giving birth to Fiske.
7. When Grace receives an offshore Morse code message, she becomes determined to fulfill the duty required of her as a Cahill, even though her father had chosen to abandon that duty himself. Where does she go as a result of the cryptic message?

Answer: Casablanca

The message that Grace received said "VS KNOW ABOUT BULLS EYE...GO TO WHITE HOUSE AM...FIND GSP...TORCH IS MORE THAN IT SEEMS...PROTECT THE RING AT ALL COSTS." She determined that the White House referred to Casablanca, and the allied operation TORCH occurring there.
8. Who is the American General Grace encounters whom she believes at first is a Cahill, but turns out to be a Vesper?

Answer: George Patton

General Patton managed to acquire the Cahill ring before Grace did, but she managed to retrieve it and escape. With that adventure began Grace's long life of gathering the 39 Clues and setting up the means by which Dan and Amy were able to reunite the Cahill family.
9. The last section of "Vespers Rising" focuses on Dan and Amy Cahill and takes place in the present, a few months after the events recounted in "The 39 Clues" Book 10: "Into the Gauntlet". Fiske brings Amy and Dan news and tells them that the ring must be moved. Where do they go to retrieve the ring?

Answer: Switzerland

Fiske, Dan and Amy went to the bank where they opened a safety deposit box. Instead of the ring, all that they found in the box was an envelope with a letter addressed to Fiske. Of course, it was a clue keyed to Fiske's memories, and they learned where they needed to go from there: a Cahill-owned chalet in Zermatt, Switzerland.
10. Amy, Dan and Fiske find the ring, but not without an encounter with 'the enemy.' Who is the lead Vesper agent who tries to take the ring from them?

Answer: Casper Wyoming

Unlike the Cahills, who have kept things 'in the family,' so to speak, the Vespers recruited freely to find people who were ruthless and highly skilled in whatever areas that they felt were needed.
