Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "It's a Long, Long Way to Tipperary", according to the song by Jack Judge, written in 1912. So, where exactly is Tipperary?

Answer: Ireland

Jack Judge wrote the song using Tipperary as a reference to his ancestral home (his grandparents lived there), and the song became a popular war song (during the Great War). Today, the town of Tipperary, in the province of Munster, has welcoming signs that say, "You've come a long way...".
2. I've always loved swinging to the Glenn Miller rendition of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo". Can you tell me where, exactly, Chattanooga is?

Answer: Tennessee

Harry Warren and Mack Gordon's inspiration for this song was a wood-burning steam locomotive owned by the Cincinnati Southern Railway, but the song itself describes a train that runs from Pennsylvania to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The city is in the south-eastern part of the State, in Hamilton County, on Chickamauga Lake and Nickajack Lake, which are both part of the Tennessee River.
3. Murray Head spent "One Night in Bangkok" in 1984. In which country in Southeast Asia can Bangkok be found?

Answer: Thailand

Bangkok is the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand, and has existed since a trading post was established at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River in the 15th century. In Thai, the name of the city is Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, or just Krung Thep for short.
4. In answer to the British Invasion of the 1960s, the Lovin' Spoonful released "Coconut Grove" to tout their American roots. Where, oh where is Coconut Grove?

Answer: Florida

"Coconut Grove" was composed by John Sebastian and recorded by The Lovin' Spoonful in 1967. Coconut Grove is a neighbourhood in the city of Miami, Florida. It was originally incorporated in 1919, but was shortly after absorbed into Miami (in 1925).
5. I've always wanted to meet "The Girl From Ipanema". Where would I need to go?

Answer: Brazil

The popular bossa nova tune is believed to be the second-most recorded pop song, after The Beatles' "Yesterday". Since its release in 1964 it has reached the pinnacle of being instantly recognized as elevator music.

Ipanema is a neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is in the South Zone, right on the Atlantic Coast, and has an extremely popular beach, made famous by the song.
6. Graham Nash wrote "Marrakesh Express" in 1968 after vacationing there in 1966. Where is Marrakesh?

Answer: Morocco

Crosby, Stills & Nash released the song in 1969. Nash's Moroccan vacation included a train ride from Casablanca to Marrakesh, and it was apparently just like it is presented in the song, including the 'ducks and pigs and chickens'.

Marrakesh was founded in 1062 AD, and can be found in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in central Morocco.
7. The Beach Boys wanted to go to "Kokomo". It's a little island off the coast of which Caribbean nation?

Answer: Jamaica

No, the Beach Boys were not singing about Kokomo, Indiana. The island of Kokomo (now named Sandals Cay) is off the coast of Jamaica in Montego Bay. The name change came after Sandals purchased the tiny (2 1/2 acre) island, and built a couples resort there.
8. If you want to "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66", you have your choice of nine different U.S. States. Do you know which city is the eastern terminus?

Answer: Chicago, IL

Beginning in Chicago, Illinois, Route 66 (now also called the Will Rogers Highway), the road ran through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before finding the west coast at Santa Monica, California.
9. If you ever went to Sunday School, you would know that "Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho". In which of these regions is Jericho found today?

Answer: Palestine

The biblical Battle of Jericho can be read about in the Book of Joshua, and even though (as the story goes) Jericho's 'walls came a-tumblin' down', the city still stands today. It is located in the Palestinian West Bank, in territory occupied by Israeli forces since 1967, although since 1994 it has been under Palestinian administrative control.
10. No, I didn't forget about "Scarborough Fair". Simon & Garfunkel knew where Scarborough was when they sang their rendition of the traditional ballad in 1966. Do you know in what English shire (county) it can be found?

Answer: North Yorkshire

"Scarborough Fair", as a traditional English ballad, has existed in one form or another since the mid-17th century, although songs with lyrics referring to the Scarborough Fair and the line "Parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme" did not appear until the 19th century.

Scarborough is a city in the county of North Yorkshire in northern England on the coast of the North Sea. It is a popular resort town, and has earned the nickname "Brighton of the North".
