Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'C', in its simplest form, has meaning. Which of these is not represented by 'C'?

Answer: The symbol for the element calcium

'Ca' is the symbol for calcium ... 'C' represents carbon.

In addition to the other three options from the question, 'C' could be a battery size, a type of vitamin, a radio-frequency band (4-6 GHz), a coulomb (unit of electric charge), '12' in hexadecimal... the list goes on, and that's just when keeping it a CAPITAL 'C'. The lower case 'c' can mean the speed of light in vacuum, the speed of sound, a mathematical constant, et cetera.
2. Our world is not ALL even numbers and perfect structures. The Magicicada genus of what insect species has a 13- or 17-year life cycle?

Answer: Cicadas

It is surmised by scientists that the reason for the 13- or 17-year life cycle is a response to the more regular life cycle of predators.

There are seven (strangely enough) species of Magicicada that have been identified; three have a 17-year life cycle and four have a 13-year life cycle.
3. There are many countries in the world that begin with 'C', but do you know which one extends the furthest south by latitude?

Answer: Chile

The Central African Republic is one of many other 'C' countries: Canada, China, the Czech Republic, the Cayman Islands, Côte d'Ivoire, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Chad, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cape Verde and Cameroon.

Straddling the equator are Colombia and both of the Congos.

Lying south of the equator are: Comoros (near Madagascar) at 12 degrees, 10 minutes S; the Cook Islands at 21 degrees, 14 minutes S; and Chile at 56 degrees, 32 minutes S.
4. Chronologically, which of these historical events occurred first?

Answer: Conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great

Chronologically from earliest to most recent: Alexander conquered Persia over a series of battles from 334 to 328 B.C.; the Colossus of Rhodes was destroyed in an earthquake in 226 B.C.; Jesus was crucified at Calvary circa A.D. 33; and Constantinople was founded in the year A.D. 330.
5. What popular board game, created in 1995 by Klaus Teuber, involves trade, commerce and expansion as players vie for space and resources on a variable board? Fill in the blank: "The Settlers of ____".

Answer: Catan

In its first year, "Die Siedler von Catan" won in 1995 the Game of the Year in Germany, first place in 'Deutscher Spiele Preis', the Essen Feather, and the Meeples' Choice Award. These accomplishments were followed up by receiving the 1996 Origins Award for 'Best Fantasy or Science Fiction Board Game'.

Since the release of the original game, the "Settlers of Catan" franchise has produced a number of variations and expansions, increasing the popularity of the game worldwide.
6. Comic book characters come from many different 'universes'. Keeping that in mind, can you pick the odd villain out?

Answer: Catwoman

Catwoman is a character from DC Comics, making her first appearance in "Batman" #1 in 1940. Originally called 'The Cat', her alter ego's name is Selina Kyle.

Carnage, Calypso and Carrion are all villains from the Marvel Comics universe, each making first appearances in the "Spider-Man" comics. Carrion came first chronologically, introduced in 1978's "The Spectacular Spider-Man" #25. Next came Calypso in 1980's "The Amazing Spider-Man" #209. Lastly, Carnage showed up for the first time as Cletus Kassidy (before he became Carnage) in "The Amazing Spider-Man" #344 (1991), then in symbiotic costume as Carnage in "The Amazing Spider-Man" #361 (1992).
7. In the video game "Pac-Man", there are four enemy ghosts... what colour is Clyde?

Answer: Orange

In the original 1980 Japanese release, Clyde carried the name 'Otoboke', which translated as 'stupid'. The American version's personality or character was Pokey.
8. Each of these movies feature actors whose initials are C.C., with one exception. Which one does NOT belong?

Answer: Dances With Wolves

"City Lights" was a 1931 Charlie Chaplin (as 'The Tramp') silent film about his character who fell in love with a blind girl (played by Virginia Cherrill) with a financially struggling family, while at the same time making friends with millionaire (played by Harry Myers) that allows him to help out his love.

"Caddyshack" (1980) starred Chevy Chase, along with Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, and Ted Knight. The comedy revolved around caddies at an upscale golf course, a loudmouthed rich golfer, a wager on a matchup, and an unkillable gopher.

"Fair Game" (1995) was an action movie that featured Cindy Crawford with William Baldwin and Steven Berkoff as Crawford's character (a lawyer) is targeted by ex-KGB killers whose deal with a Cuban may be threatened by divorce proceedings (his assets being lost). Baldwin played the cop who took it upon himself to protect her.

The odd movie out was "Dances with Wolves", which was produced and directed by Kevin Costner who also played the main character. Kevin Costner does not have the initials C.C. "Dances with Wolves" was a 1990 Oscar-winning film about a Union officer during the American Civil War who, through varying circumstances, found himself living with and learning the Sioux way of life. Eventually, he had to make a choice between the Sioux or his former American military existence.
9. Celestial bodies abound above our heads, many only visible through telescopes. Which of these does not exist within our solar system?

Answer: Cassiopeia

Cassiopeia, a constellation noticeable in our night sky with its distinctive 'W' shape, is named for the vain queen of Greek mythology. There are five main stars visible in the constellation; from left to right they are Epsilon Cassiopeiae (Segin), Delta Cassiopeiae (Ruchbah), Gamma Cassiopeiae (the brightest in the constellation), Alpha Cassiopeiae (Schedar), and Beta Cassiopeiae (Caph). The closest star in the constellation (Eta Cassiopeiae, or Achird), is less than 20 light years away.

Callisto is one of Jupiter's moons (third largest in the solar system), Ceres is a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and Charon is one of Pluto's moons.
10. Of these 20th-century novelists, which of them has four novels that are one-word titles beginning with the letter 'C'?

Answer: Stephen King

Stephen King's four novels in question are "Carrie" (1974), "Cujo" (1981), "Christine" (1983), and "Cell" (2006). He also has "Cycle of the Werewolf" (1985) and "The Colorado Kid" (2005) that begin with 'C', although they are longer than a single word.

Michael Crichton has lots of single-word book titles, but only "Congo" (1980) began with 'C' in the 20th century.

Clive Cussler has also written many single-word-titled books, but only "Cyclops" (1986) qualifies. In conjunction with Jack DuBrul, Cussler also wrote "Corsair" as part of the series "The Oregon Files".

Lastly, Tom Clancy had NO novels that fit the bill as defined in the question (in the 20th century).
