Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before Olaf renames it, what is the name of the boat that the Baudelaires and Count Olaf are sailing on in the beginning of the book?

Answer: Carmelita

Carmelita is a child Count Olaf used to take care of with Esme. There is a picture of him changing the name to "Count Olaf" before the first chapter.
2. What is the name of the girl who finds Violet, Klaus, Sunny, and Count Olaf after their ship wrecks?

Answer: Friday

Friday is storm scavenging when she finds the orphans and Count Olaf. She proceeds to take the Baudelaires to the island she lives on but refuses to take Count Olaf because he was rude to her.
3. What is the name of the beverage the Baudelaires drink on the island?

Answer: coconut cordial

The coconut cordial is made from fermented coconuts and is drunk at every meal on the island. Parsley soda is a beverage the Baudelaires drank in "The Ersatz Elevator".
4. What is the name of the island's facilitator?

Answer: Ishmael

At the beginning of the book the islanders believe that Ishmael can't stand; however, by the end they find out that he can. As facilitator Ishmael decides what items scavenged from storms are worth keeping.
5. What type of fruit grows on the big tree in the middle of the island?

Answer: apples

None of the islanders eat the apples except for Ishmael, who secretly walks over to the tree to get them. It is later revealed that the apples contain horseradish, the antidote to the deadly fungus Medusoid Mycelium.
6. Who does Count Olaf disguise himself as?

Answer: Kit Snicket

To make this disguise Count Olaf uses seaweed for a wig and his diving helmet with Medusoid Mycelium for a baby bump. This disguise does not fool the islanders, who then place Count Olaf in a birdcage.
7. Who harpoons Count Olaf in the stomach?

Answer: Ishmael

Ishmael does this because he is tired of Count Olaf's lying. Unfortunately, he ends up shattering Count Olaf's diving helmet, releasing the Medusoid Mycelium across the island.
8. Count Olaf dies.

Answer: True

Count Olaf dies soon after he saves Kit Snicket so she can have her baby. The last thing Count Olaf says before his death is the last stanza of "This be The Verse" by Philip Larkin.
9. What do the Baudelaires name Kit Snicket's baby?

Answer: Beatrice

Kit Snicket dies shortly after having her baby, and she leaves the Baudelaires in charge of her. The Baudelaires choose the name Beatrice in order to name her after their mother.
10. What punctuation mark is in the water in the picture at the end of chapter fourteen?

Answer: a question mark

Kit Snicket tells the Baudelaires that the Quagmires and Captain Widdershins were taken by this object. In "The Grim Grotto" it appears in Count Olaf's radar, and he quickly sails away from it.
