Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of food does Sunny find on the boat that left the Hotel Denouement?

Answer: White beans

After the tragic end in "The Penultimate Peril", the Baudelaires and Count Olaf were in each other's clutches in the middle of the ocean. This had been achieved when they had floated the ship off the sunning roof of the Hotel Denouement after it set on fire.

The three children tried to think of their own plans for survival while the nefarious Count Olaf attempted to cosmetically alter their ship to their benefit. Sunny found the dusty jar of white beans under a seat on the boat before a storm, more furious than Hurricane Herman, swept up and knocked the boat into a coastal shelf.
2. What is the name of the young girl that the Baudelaires first meet on the coastal shelf?

Answer: Friday

After their ordeal on the ship, the Baudelaires and Count Olaf make their way around the coastal shelf with no sense of direction until they come across a young girl in a white robe named Friday. She offers the Baudelaires shelter and a place in the local island community but tells Count Olaf to leave as he does not look like a nice person.

At the island, the children experience their first tastes of Coconut Cordial and meet the odd ruler of the island who constantly keeps his feet in a type of clay that helps his foot pain.
3. Which is not an object found by an islander amongst the detritus on the coastal shelf?

Answer: Spatula

Shortly before what the islanders call 'Decision Day', they hitch a sleigh to the feet of sheep (which appeared after a fierce storm) and it heads to the arboretum on the far side of the island where few dare to go. Another custom for the islanders is to reach the single apple tree in the arboretum and bring the bitter apples back to the other side where one would take a bite and leave the island forever. Of course, no one has wanted to leave the island for many years, so the islanders simply built the boat as a tradition and set it on fire out to sea. Amongst the other items returned to Ishmael (and then refused for odd reasons) were overalls, skis, and a salad spinner.
4. Kit Snicket was found on a cube comprised of which objects?

Answer: Books

While searching for detritus, the Baudelaires come across a large cube comprised entirely of books. On top, the children find Kit Snicket, still pregnant, who is unconscious from the storm. When the other islanders hear of this, they come and decide to push the cube back to Ishmael, but are unable to finish this. Meanwhile, Count Olaf shows up dressed in Esme Squalor's fiery red dress (somehow amongst the detritus) claiming to be the pregnant Kit Snicket.
5. Where is Count Olaf placed after the islanders (and Ishmael) decide to leave him on the coastal shelf?

Answer: In a large birdcage

The Kit Snicket disguise created by Count Olaf doesn't fool a single person on the island and they decide that he can't be trusted. They decide to place him inside a large birdcage to prevent him from causing trouble. Meanwhile, the Baudelaires and Friday discover that the Incredibly Deadly Viper, which they once met at Uncle Monty's house, has shown up on the island (though Kit Snicket reveals that it traveled on her cube of books).
6. Which two islanders are responsible for asking the Baudelaires to find weapons to cause a mutiny against Ishmael?

Answer: Erewhon and Finn

After Ishmael forces Count Olaf to stay in the birdcage, he declares that it would be impractical to bring another outsider to the island unless she could vow to agree to their ways. The Baudelaires find this to be a horrible idea as Kit is not only pregnant, but the coastal shelf could be stuck underwater at any given time.

While they stay with Kit, two islanders, Erewhon and Finn, reveal that some of their friends are organizing a mutiny against Ishmael.
7. What is the nickname of the Incredibly Deadly Viper?

Answer: Ink

After being approached by Erewhon and Finn, the Baudelaires decide to agree to their mutiny and travel to the arboretum and obtain weapons for what they think will become another schism. They make their way through the thousands and thousands of uncatalogued items in the arboretum to the apple tree in the center where Ink shows the orphans a hole in the trunk.

When they get inside they find a comfy room with a kitchen and sitting area. This is when Ishmael reappears.
8. Which person's handwriting is identifiable in the book found in the apple tree?

Answer: The Baudelaire family mother

This book is found inside the sitting room of the apple tree and it's a lot like Klaus' commonplace book. It chronicles the history of the island dating back many years. Ishmael explains that the Baudelaire parents resided on the island prior to Violet's birth, but left in order to expose her to the real world.

This commonplace book is also known as 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'. According to Ismael, the Baudelaires had planned to dig a tunnel to Anwhistle Aquatics, but the tunnel had collapsed and the islanders feared that the Medusoid Mycellium could enter the shaft.
9. Where do the Baudelaires find the cure for the Medusoid Mycellium on the island?

Answer: In the arboretum

The orphans and Ishmael return to the islanders on the sheep-drawn sleigh to find that the schism has already begun. However, Count Olaf arrives, having escaped his birdcage, and Ishmael shoots him with the harpoon gun that was found on the coastal shelf.

Unfortunately, this hits his fake pregnant stomach (still disguised by the fiery dress), and it turns out to be the helmet containing the Medusoid Mycellium spores. Everyone is infected and the Baudelaires race to find a cure. As everyone else tries to escape on the outrigger, the Baudelaires find that the horseradish needed to cure them from the poison was in the apples of the apple tree in the arboretum.

The hybrid was an idea created by their parents.
10. What name is given to Kit Snicket's child?

Answer: Beatrice

The Baudelaires race to the islanders before they can leave, but they refuse to eat the horseradish apples. Ishmael persuades them to leave (knowing that he is safe as he had already been eating the bitter apples). The children focused their attention on Kit, who was still on her book cube in labour.

She refused to eat an apple due to the harm it might cause to her baby, and the children were running out of ideas. Luckily, Count Olaf was still around (though in poor condition). They were able to help the baby, but both Count Olaf and Kit Snicket passed away due to the Medusoid Mycellium.

The Baudelaires vowed to raise the child as their own and give it the name of one who had previously passed on, as was their tradition. With the children safe from the world's troubles on the island, they lived for a year cataloging the detritus before they decided to set sail for the mainland, where they may or may not have continued as members of VFD.
