Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Arriving back at school after the holiday, Jo Bettany was told about the new chalet, St. Clare's. Which mistress was to be in charge of St. Clare's?

Answer: Miss Wilson

Mademoiselle Lepattre was the Head of the Chalet School. Miss Wilson was to move into St. Clare's house to take charge there. Jo and her friends Marie, Simone and Frieda were also to live there, and help keep an eye on the naughty middles to whom the chalet was to be home.
2. Jo had toothache, and so was sent to the dentist in Innsbruck. Whilst in Innsbruck, who did she meet unexpectedly?

Answer: Mrs. Venables and her daughters, Daisy and Primula

Margot Venables was Jem Russell's sister, who had come from Australia to try to find her brother. Daisy had heard Jo and Frieda talking together in English and asked them to help her mother find the hotel in which they were staying. Mrs. Venables became matron at the Chalet School.
3. What was the name of the new matron in St. Clare's house?

Answer: Matron Besly

Matron Besly was very unpopular, going against many of the Chalet School's traditions. The middles revived the S.S.M. (Society for the Suppression of Matron), a society that had been founded to 'suppress' Matron Webb in 'The Princess Of The Chalet School', in the hopes of making her leave the school. They did their best to annoy Matron Besly without getting into trouble themselves.
4. Which of the following girls were NOT involved in the making of Baby Voodoo and the attempt to frighten Cornelia with it?

Answer: All of these were involved

Cornelia, very conscious of her position as a senior middle in the new chalet, had rebuked Mary Shaw for using slang. However, in doing so she had used more slang than Mary and thereby brought down Miss Wilson's anger on herself. In order to pay Cornelia back for her actions, the seven middles made a truly terrifying puppet and dangled it from the roof to the window of Cornelia's bedroom.

Unfortunately, they did not waken her and ended up scaring some of the maids that worked in the chalet instead.
5. When Biddy O'Ryan began telling stories about banshees after lights out each night, who had bad dreams and started sleepwalking?

Answer: Alixe von Elsen

Miss Wilson told Biddy that she was not trustworthy, and said she would have to sleep on a camp bed in Miss Wilson's own room for a whole week. Alixe and Jo, who had been startled by the sleepwalker, were soon recovered from their scary night.
6. As there were only nine weeks in the term, the girls did not have their usual half term holiday. Where did they go for the day out they had instead of half term?

Answer: Mayrhofen

The girls were joined by Grizel Cochrane and Juliet Carrick for their expedition. They had a brief look at the village, then went to picnic in the woods. Despite forgetting the basket with the fruit, the girls had a lovely day, and were exhausted when they finally returned to the school.
7. Did the Chalet School win the cricket match they played against St. Scholastika's School?

Answer: No

Despite the best efforts of Marie, the Games Prefect, who scored 47, the 'Saints' won the game by five runs. Jo, Margia and Elsie all scored ducks, although Jo did take two wickets when she was bowling.
8. What sort of group was formed by the middles of St. Clare's?

Answer: An orchestra

Cornelia and Evadne had been to spend the weekend with their families in Salzburg and had returned to school with a crate of musical instruments. The girls practised well away from the school, and gave a highly entertaining concert at the end of the year.

The high spot of the concert turned out to be Cornelia's performance on the saxophone, which reduced the audience to tears of laughter!
9. Which of the following girls had an argument with Jo at a time when they should have been studying for their end of term exams?

Answer: Anne Seymour

Anne had rudely said, "Go and stick your head in a bag," to Jo, not an appropriate remark for a sub-prefect to make to the Head Girl. Jo was upset by this, and became very cool towards Anne. However, Anne fell over a ledge whilst the seniors were out gathering flowers, and needed to be rescued by Jo. This helped the two girls to sort out their differences.
10. Who became betrothed to Eugen von und zu Wertheimer at the end of the story?

Answer: Marie

Marie was to marry the young Baron, Simone was to go to the Sorbonne, while Jo and Frieda were to stay at home and help their families. The quartet remained good friends after leaving school, even though they were to go their own way and not meet often.
I hope you have enjoyed the quiz; Elinor M. Brent-Dyer's 'Chalet School' series is well worth reading if you have not already done so.
