Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is the first book where we see Robin Humphries as a nun. By what name is she now known?

Answer: Soeur Marie-Cecile

Cecilia Marya Humphries is Robin's real name, hence her taking Marie-Cécile as her name when she becomes a nun. She and a fellow nun, along with a male driver acting as backup, are sent by the Mother Superior to rescue Adrienne from the dodgy apartment where she lives on her own, at the request of the local priest. Both her parents are dead and she has little money and little to eat, which causes her to become ill.

She is also afraid of the concierge (and with good reason, as she is later revealed to be known to the police and has several criminal tenants).

When Robin and Soeur Monique come to pick Adrienne up, the concierge threatens to have her arrested, claiming Adrienne owes her money, but Robin refuses to back down and warns the concierge to leave Adrienne alone.
2. Which of these girls does NOT become friends with Adrienne during the book?

Answer: Heather Clayton

Heather is a prefect and therefore not in Adrienne's age group. Adrienne is able to go to the Chalet School thanks to Joey Maynard's scholarship, after Robin writes to her and asks her to give it to Adrienne so Adrienne can get a proper education. When Robin takes Adrienne to the station, because of her connections with the Russell family, she asks Ailie Russell to look after Adrienne and show her the ropes.

As Judy and Janice are Ailie's closest friends, they join in as well. Adrienne also befriends Jane Carew, Tessa de Bersac and a couple of other girls, but Ailie, Janice and Judy are her core friendship group.
3. Why does Janet Henderson take a dislike to Adrienne?

Answer: Adrienne is joint top of the class with her.

Janet is very academic and has consistently come top of the form lists, but Adrienne turns out to be very bright, and is soon tying with her at the top. She also picks up German very quickly, despite never having spoken it before. Although it is down to Adrienne's hard work, Janet suspects her of cheating and studying out of hours. Adrienne's friends quickly figure out why Janet is giving Adrienne the cold shoulder and stick up for her when Janet makes nasty remarks during a skiing class. Adrienne herself is puzzled as to why Janet dislikes her.
4. What inventive insult does Janice use to describe Janet?

Answer: Fatuous jobbernowl

Janice isn't pleased when Ailie and Judy figure out why Janet dislikes Adrienne so much, and comes out with this quote. She has been consciously trying to expand her vocabulary, as has Jane Carew, who looks in 'Roget's Thesaurus' for interesting new expressions.

The Inter V girls follow suit, and the staff see the funny side of it as Peggy Burnett remembers Joey and friends going through a Shakespearian phase (which you'll remember if you've read 'Jo of the Chalet School'). In case you're wondering, 'jobbernowl' is a 16th century term that means 'blockhead'.
5. As the weather is terrible and several girls are stuck at school, the staff organise a treasure hunt for them during half term. Which girl finds her parcel in a bathroom, and gets drenched in the process?

Answer: Prudence Dawbarn

Adrienne isn't sure exactly what a treasure hunt is, but soon gets into the spirit of things. The girls have to hunt in the upstairs area, including their dormitories (though not in the drawers as Matey would not be happy!), the bathrooms and a few other places, for tiny packages.

Although she needs a bit of help from the teachers, Adrienne finds her package - which turns out to be a little painting of Lake Lucerne - behind a list of bathroom rules. Prudence Dawbarn is the last to find hers, which is tied to the top of a shower.

She stands on the edge of the bath to get it, slips, grabs hold of the shower cord and ends up getting soaked. Miss Burnett has a go at her, but Miss Annersley sees the funny side. Prudence's package turns out to be toilet soap.
6. Joey Maynard throws a sheets and pillowcases party at her house for the Seniors. What does Adrienne come as?

Answer: A white cat

Specifically, it's the White Cat from the French fairy tale of the same name. Ailie is the angel, Judy is the Christmas pudding and Janice is the Normandy peasant, and if you have the '80s Armada edition of 'Adrienne', you'll see all four of them on the cover.

The Seniors make cakes and sandwiches, dress up in sheets and pillowcases and have a fancy dress contest over at Freudesheim, followed by games. Joey herself gets into the spirit of things and dresses in a medieval outfit. (If you've read 'Jo Returns to the Chalet School', you may remember the sheets and pillowcases party where Cornelia Flower has the same idea as Géneviève Rosier, and dresses up as a ghost with sports equipment to make her wings.)
7. Which of these correspondences does NOT appear in 'From the Post-Bag'?

Answer: Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson

A few 'Chalet School' books contain a chapter which solely consists of letters between characters, and 'Adrienne' is one of them. Adrienne writes to Robin to thank her and keep her updated about her progress at school, but is also concerned about Janet. Janet writes to her cousin Kate Dalziel, asking if she can leave school and move in with them, as she can't stand Adrienne and finds her smug and annoying (Kate replies telling her not to be so ridiculous). Joey asks Robin to do some research into Adrienne's family background, as Adrienne reminds both her and Jack of someone, but she isn't sure who.

She also tells Robin that Daisy and Laurie Rosomon are moving to the Platz. There is no correspondence between any of the teachers.
8. Sybil Russell, who is now living in Australia, is getting married and Ailie flies out to see her big sister and parents. However, Joey is unable to come to the wedding. What is the reason for this?

Answer: Phil is ill with mastoiditis.

Phil, Joey's youngest daughter, becomes seriously ill with mastoiditis and has to be admitted to hospital for a surgery, and Joey is deeply worried about her. As a result, Joey and Jack stay behind in Switzerland (the triplets wouldn't have gone anyway as they have exams coming up and Miss Annersley would have said no). Miss Annersley sends Janet to Freudesheim with a message, in the hope that she might be able to talk to Joey, and Adrienne also goes over there with typing paper for Joey. Mary-Lou Trelawney also arrives for a visit and asks after Robin. Joey tells both girls that Phil is recovering, and Janet momentarily forgets her grudge against Adrienne. Mary-Lou hints that she knows something, but won't say what, to Joey's annoyance.
9. Adrienne's form do a series of tableaux as Saturday night's entertainment, which is cut short when Janet's dress catches fire. What is the theme of the tableaux?

Answer: Catastrophes in history

A pretty morbid choice! The scenes depicted in the tableaux include Adam and Eve being exiled from the Garden of Eden, the Massacre of Glencoe, the eruption of Pompeii and the burning of Moscow, with poetry readings by Jane Carew and songs in between. During the Moscow scene, Janet, who is dressed as Marie Antoinette, discovers a live match which has accidentally got mixed in with the coloured lights and set the scenery on fire. Janet's dress catches fire and Adrienne rushes to put it out, while others extinguish the burning scenery. Both Adrienne and Janet are injured, and two of Len's fingers are burned; when Reg Entwistle (who you might remember from 'Jo to the Rescue') bandages them, she realises that she is in love with him.
10. Adrienne has to have her hair cut short. Which former Chalet School girl - who turns out to be a distant relative - does she resemble after she has her hair cut?

Answer: Robin Humphries

Who'd have thought it? Mary-Lou has a hunch when she sees Adrienne with short hair, and she's right - Adrienne turns out to be related distantly to Robin on her father's side. Although she was born and raised in France, her parents were English and her father turns out to be related to Robin's dad Ted; Joey asks her brother Dick to do some research, as Ted was a friend of his. Dick has an old letter from Ted and tells Joey that Ted's uncle was an artist called Charles Desmoines Corbett, who dropped the 'Corbett' part, and Dick reckons that Adrienne's dad was Charles Desmoines' son, making him and Ted cousins, and Adrienne and Robin second cousins. Janet also confesses to Miss Annersley, and Miss Annersley reveals that she has known all along about her dislike of Adrienne but didn't want to interfere. (Also, Matey gets locked in the bathroom due to a dodgy lock.)
