Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These are often found in busy towns and cities to help control traffic - which light colour means it is safe for drivers to go?

Answer: Green

The picture shows a traffic light. Traffic lights are often found in busy towns and cities to help control traffic and stop cars crashing into each other. They are used at busy intersections and cars are only allowed to go through when the light is green. If it is red they must stop.

Many countries traffic lights also have an amber or orange light, this is used to warn traffic that the light is about to change.
2. You might use one of these to find your way but what is it called?

3. Which one of these would you NOT be likely to put in a container like this one?

Answer: Money

This is a trash can, or bin as we say in the U.K. These are often found on streets for people to get rid of their trash or rubbish. This helps to keep the streets clean by stopping people from leaving rubbish all over the street. Chocolate bar wrappers, empty cans and used chewing gum are all things that should be put in a bin so as not to litter.

However you would not want to throw your money away!
4. What is the name of this vehicle that people use to get around their town or city?

Answer: Bus

The picture shows a bus. Buses are a type of public transport that enable people to pay a fare and get a ride to where they need to go. In order to cut pollution some cities are now using buses powered by electricity rather than diesel.
5. If you need a rest while out and about you might sit on one of these - what is it called?

Answer: Bench

This is a bench. Benches are commonly found in towns and cities as a place for people to take a quick break while out and about. They are particularly useful for older people or people who are disabled who may struggle to walk and stand for so long. The bench in the picture is made from wood and metal but they can be made from many materials including concrete and even recycled plastic.
6. Objects like these can often be found in towns and cities but what are they called?

Answer: Bollards

Bollards are a common sight in many towns and cities. They are usually used to stop vehicles from moving into a certain area, for example if the area is for pedestrians only. Some cities have electronic bollards that move up and down. These allow certain vehicles, such as delivery vans or the emergency services to access the area while keeping other vehicles out.
7. In the U.K., as well as some other countries, this type of crossing for pedestrians is named after which animal?

Answer: Zebra

The picture shows a zebra crossing. The crossing is called this as it has black and white stripes a bit like those found on a zebra. In the US these are often called crosswalks. At a crossing like this traffic has to stop to let people cross the road. This makes it a safer place to cross the road than a location with no crossing.
8. In the U.K. do you put mail you want to send in boxes like this?

Answer: Yes

Boxes like this are a common sight in the UK and are for people to put their letters in so they can be collected by the post service. They are usually called post boxes. Traditionally post boxes are painted red. They also usually have a symbol representing the King or Queen. This post box has the symbol for King Edward VII on it meaning it was first put up during his reign.
9. Places such as this are used by vehicles that use what type of power?

Answer: Electricity

This is a charging point for electric vehicles. These vehicles do not need gasoline instead they have an electric motor and are powered by batteries. When the batteries get low on energy they can be recharged at places like this. Electric vehicles do not emit fumes like gasoline vehicles and so are good for keeping the air free of pollutants.
10. You might see items like these in the street - what would you use them for?

Answer: Parking bicycles

Metal stands like these are for parking bicycles. The metal loops are secured to the floor and you use a bike lock to secure your bike to the loop. This helps to stop your bike being stolen. Stands of this type are sometimes called Sheffield Stands because they were first used in the city of Sheffield in England.
