A Bird's-Eye View Trivia Quiz

Animals and eyes...eyes and animals. A birds-eye view has the ability to see the span of an object from above, so we'll be doing the exact same thing with the topic of animals and eyes, mostly with pop culture references. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Drew Barrymore appeared in the 1985 film "Cat's Eye". Who wrote the story upon which the film is based?

Answer: Stephen King

Derived from some of the material from his "Night Shift" short story collection, "Cat's Eye" follows the story of a cat and those it comes into contact with. The third story features Drew Barrymore's character and the cat almost entirely as they fight to stop a troll from stealing her breath away. Directed by Lewis Teague, who also directed "Cujo" in 1983, the film is less remembered than most of Stephen King's other adaptations.

The stories within border more on fantasy than the characteristic horror we see in the author's work.

The movie was King's second screenplay (after the George A. Romero film, "Creepshow" which also used a number of King's stories).
2. If you add the pips showing on a pair of dice rolled to 'snake eyes', what number have you rolled?

Answer: Two

Snake Eyes, depending on the game you play, is either really good or really bad luck. Much like rolling double-sixes, the snake eyes roll is one of the rarest you could achieve when playing with normal, six-sided dice. Symbolizing treacherous luck, "Snake Eyes" is also the name of a movie starring Nicholas Cage released in 1998.

This Brian de Palma film earned over $100m worldwide and it's actually about wrestling. Snake Eyes is also a term used for a specific wrestling throw. Those snake eyes sure have a way of slithering around.
3. Which of these breeds is typically NOT used as a seeing-eye dog?

Answer: Chihuahua

While German Shepherds were the first to be recognized as guide dogs, later working class breeds were also inducted for their services. The Chihuahua, on the other hand, is not typically a guide dog due to its small size. Instead, more mid-to-large sized breeds are utilized.

In many countries, said dogs are allowed to go anywhere with their masters as they are integral to their daily routines. Dogs are also trained for hearing-impaired owners and for typical medical services (ie. working with autism, psychiatric help, etc.).
4. In photography, a 'fisheye lens' is a type of wide-angle lens.

Answer: True

Although films won't typically use a fisheye lens, this type of lens can provide an extremely large, wide shot with distorted edges and a clear, centralized focus. With a circular fisheye, only a circle of image will be visible in a distorted sense but with a full frame, the entire shot will radiate and skew outwards from the middle of the image. Fisheyes are named as such due to the fact that they project an image characteristic of that seen through the small, circular eye of a fish.
5. This 1982 song was notable for appearing in "Rocky III" (1982). What is the name of this song by Survivor?

Answer: Eye of the Tiger

A characteristic 'get-ready-for-the-fight song', "Eye of the Tiger" was the only single from Survivor to reach #1 on both the US Billboard charts and the UK Singles Chart. Appearing on the band's third album, "Eye of the Tiger", it became the band's breakout hit. Survivor also contributed singles to the soundtracks for "Rocky IV" (1985) and "The Karate Kid" (1984). "Eye of the Tiger" also appeared in "Rock Band 2" as one of the earliest obtainable titles in the game.

The "Eye of the Tiger" album reached #2 on the Billboard Charts. So close, yet so far.
6. In the 1929 film "Un Chien Andalou", one graphic scene depicts a woman getting her eye slit open by a razor blade. In reality, the effect was created by slicing what type of animal's eye?

Answer: Cow

This scene, made to shock French Surrealist film-goers, became notorious in this Luis Buñuel/Salvador Dali movie released in the late 1920s. One of the opening scenes shows Buñuel holding open his female protagonist's eye and he takes a razor to it. A change in cuts allows for the switching of the proper eye with a cow's eye.

This film movement persisted for less than ten years and consisted of movies made based on Freud's theories of the subconscious. Because of this, films like "Un Chien Andalou" show a number of seemingly unconnected scenes which evoke unknown desires and thoughts of the viewer, however extreme or unconventional they may be.
7. What type of animal, notable for its round, stereoscopic eyes is able to see 360 degrees around its body?

Answer: Chameleon

Chameleon eyes are one of the more popular, notable traits of this reptile (with the others usually being their ability to camouflage into most natural environments, their curly tails, and their extremely long tongues). Chameleon eyes are able to perceive two different images, one from each eye, in their surveillance. Because their eyes are small and protrude from their faces, they can spin in many different directions, allowing them to view the sides, front, top, bottom, and back sides on a whim.
8. What is the name of the "Daredevil" villain who "never misses a shot"?

Answer: Bullseye

Bullseye, originally appearing in a 1976 issue of Marvel's "Daredevil" comic series, is known for his ability to shoot any object at a precise target. His name hearkens to the image of a dartboard in which the bullseye is regarded as the center circle of the board and the most difficult to hit. Since Bullseye's ability doesn't rely on powers attained through mutation or technology, he relies on his own precision, skill, and dexterity to make himself a good adversary to the blind superhero.

In the 2003 "Daredevil" film, Colin Farrell portrayed Bullseye.
9. In 1997, this musician with a unique name released the song "Save Tonight" on his debut album. What is the name of the artist?

Answer: Eagle-Eye Cherry

Released as the first song on Eagle-Eye Cherry's first album, "Desireless", "Save Tonight" became the artist's first and only successful hit. While the album hit Platinum in the United States, his later releases didn't fare so well in North America though he did collaborate with Santana on his "Supernatural" album. "Save Tonight" appeared on six different Billboard Charts (hitting #1 on three of them). Eagle-Eye is the son of Don Cherry, the famous jazz musician.
"Eagle Eye" is also the name of a 2008 film starring Shia LaBeouf and directed by D.J. Caruso.
10. Humans themselves seem to have a fascination with eyes. Which of these proverbs typically refers to deception?

Answer: Pulling the wool over one's eyes

'Pulling the wool over one's eyes' alludes to the masking of the truth or tricking one into a belief. On the contrary, someone or something that is 'a sight for sore eyes' a welcome event or occurrence. If something is regarded as 'the apple of your eye', it is an object of your affection and delight. Contrasting the correct answer, seeing something 'eye-to-eye' generally means that you're (to use another proverb) 'on the same page' as someone else; both of you are in the know and of equal information.
