Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In baseball, relief pitchers sit in this area and warm up in preparation of being called in to pitch.

Answer: Bullpen

The bullpen is where pitchers warm up before going into a game. Recently, relief pitchers have started to develop celebration dances in honor of a teammate who just made a great play on offense or defense.
There is much disagreement about the actual source for the use of the word 'bullpen'.
2. Which pigs' parts were sold as future commodities in stock exchanges?

Answer: Pork bellies

Pork bellies were introduced as a commodity in the stock exchange in 1961 and remained on the market until 2011 when interest in this commodity waned to the point of its no longer having significance.
Pork bellies were used as an example of how commodities trade in the movie 'Trading Places' with Eddie Murphy.
3. To 'pig out' would describe what action?

Answer: Eating without limit/overeating

Pigging out was a favorite college activity in my day. It didn't make a difference whether it was with ice cream, grill meats, Pepsi and potato chips or, heaven forbid, salad.
Chicken out is to be cowardly.
4. This bovine-sounding contraption was on the front of many trains.

Answer: Cowcatcher

Sometimes called a pilot, the cowcatcher's function was to clear the tracks from debris in order to prevent the debris from getting caught in the wheels and causing a derailing. Modern trains are required by law to have some form of protection from on-track debris.
5. If you've got an 'axe to grind' with someone, you can also say you've 'got a ________'.

Answer: Beef

'Having a beef' or 'having beef' describes having a strong disagreement with another.

For example, "I had a beef with the pension fund over how long it takes them to release funds."
6. When someone is being 'pig-headed', it means they are being what?

Answer: Stubborn

Though a pig named Napoleon features quite centrally in one of Orwell's books, 'Animal Farm', being Orwellian generally refers to describing the government control depicted in his book '1984'.

In a 2003 NY Times article by Geoffrey Nunberg, it was claimed that the term Orwellian was the most widely used adjective derived from the name of a modern writer. Nunberg further asserted that the usage of the term Orwellian is even more common than the usage of Kafkaesque, Hemingwayesque and Dickensian together.
7. What bovine term is slang for a well-built man?

Answer: Beefcake

This term is often looked at derogatorily as being sexist in both directions, it insinuates that the subject of conversation is nothing more than a piece of warm flesh to satisfy one's sexual hunger.
8. Someone who loves being in the spotlight is said to be this:

Answer: Ham

"He always over acts; he is a real ham."
In pickup basketball games, however, the one guy who always dribbled himself once he got the ball, never passed the ball to teammates and most often took a shot was called a hog.
9. Pigtails on a person describe what?

Answer: Hairstyle

There is still some discussion whether pigtails are a single or double bunches of gathered hair and whether or not it must be braided to be properly called pigtails.

Ponytails, however, almost always refer to a single bunch of gathered hair.
10. A 'ham operator' describes what profession/hobby?

Answer: Home radio operator

Apparently, it started off as a pejorative term for unskilled radio operators until experienced amateurs took on the term with pride.

A ham radio was even operated on the International Space Station by astronaut Doug Wheelock.
