A few celebrities had gathered to give a charity Christmas concert in 2023, a couple of nights before Christmas. They were all backstage in the green room awaiting their individual curtain calls.

"I am so glad it's the end of the year" said Freddie, grabbing a glass of wine from the proffered tray and plonking himself down in front of his band mates, " ".
Karen and Richard Carpenter were both wearing Gruber and Mohr T-shirts. They stuck their heads out of the door leading to the stage, then shut the door,
"It's pretty quiet out there, I can't hear the audience" fretted Karen "In fact, it's a ".
" ?" asked Bob Geldof incredulously, or was it Midge Ure?
" " cried a really old man stuck in the corner. No one knew who he was - his name tag said "John Francis Wade" but he looked like King John IV of Portugal. "We are here to celebrate the birth of Christ", then retreated into his dark corner hoping to be teleported back to the 18th century. Faith Hill got up, sat down beside him and consoled him with, "I feel the same way you do".

"Yes," said Andy Williams, trying to invoke the spirit of the season, " ".
" " finished Bruce Springsteen (a few jaws dropped).
Suddenly Brenda Lee started jigging in front of a decorated tree in the centre of the room.
"What's she doing?" someone asked.
" " said some Flashy guy, who knew his music.
Bing Crosby was swirling his whiskey wistfully, "I wonder if we will have a ?" he asked no one in particular.
"I know I will have a " whined Elvis. "The doc said no more peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwiches".
"I know how you feel" said John with Yoko at his side. "We were hoping to sing ' ' but we can't sing that this year so we will go with " ".
"You think you have problems", said one of four brothers slumped around a table watching the other one of them practising moonwalking, " , and Christmas will never be the same".

Chris Rea was on the phone. Everybody could hear the voice at the other end of the phone - it was Darlene Love. "It's ' " she pleaded "After all, my song is the original", she added cryptically.
"I'll be " " agreed Chris, nodding into the phone.
But then Mariah Carey complicated things by going over to Chris saying loudly, so everyone could hear " ".
Otis Redding, sensing danger, sprang up and steered Mariah away from Chris mollifying her by whispering " , but if you try that line, you might just be singing..."
"... " finished City Slicker Spike Jones who had a chipmunk called Alvin on his shoulder.
Michael Buble and the Puppini Sisters, also eager to dissolve an awkward situation, started singing that old Christmas standard, the rather 'a-pealing' " ".
"Whoa" yelled Bobby Helms, "This isn't a kid's concert, we need a bit of rock 'n' roll - Try my song " ".

Just then the green light went on above the stage door. The four guys from Slade got up, grabbing guitars as they were the first act. They waved to all the other performers. " " said Noddy Holder brightly, as they filed out to the stage.
It was quiet then, just for a moment, as they all realized the big event had started. However, Rod Stewart, not one to miss an opportunity, walked purposely up to Mariah Carey and whispered " ?".

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

"Thank God It's Christmas" was written by Roger Taylor and Brian May and released on November 27, 1984. It was not included on any Queen studio album. It spent six weeks in the UK charts over Christmas of 1984 and the New Year of 1985, reaching only number 21 on the UK singles chart. This low, for Queen, position was possibly due to there being no video for the song. Another reason might have been because it was released about the same time as Band-Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" This latter song was written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure as a response to the Ethiopian Famine of the early 80s. A host of vocalists contributed to the song including Bono, Phil Collins, Boy George, Sting, George Michael, Status Quo, and Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet who collectively were called Band-Aid. It was one of the UK's biggest-selling singles of all time.

Franz Xaver Gruber (music) and Joseph Mohr (lyrics) wrote "Silent Night" ("Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht" in original German) in 1818 and is one of the most popular Christmas carols of all time. Frequently included in many contemporary artists' Christmas albums, the Carpenters' notable version appeared on their 1978 "Christmas Portrait" album.

"O Come, All Ye Faithful", is a Christmas carol that has been attributed to several people, including John Francis Wade, John Reading (unlikely) and King John IV of Portugal (1604-1656). The earliest written version is in a manuscript by Wade, dated 1751. Faith Hill had a lovely version on her 2008 Christmas album "Joy To The World".

Edward Pola and George Wyle wrote "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" in 1963 for Andy Williams for his first Christmas album "The Andy Williams Christmas Album". It was not released as a single but as it is one of Mr Williams' signature tunes, it has appeared in the Billboard Hot 100 consistently in the 2000s.

A rock version of "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" (1934) was recorded by Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band in 1975, and was released in 1985 as the B-side to "My Hometown". Springsteen features the song in most of his November and December concerts and it often concludes his shows.

"Rocking Round the Christmas Tree" was recorded in 1958 by Brenda Lee when she was 13 but it did not enter the Billboard Hot 100 until 1960 when Ms Lee was better known. It also charted in 1961 and 1962. Between 2014-21, it charted on the Billboard Top 100 in the top ten every year. It hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 in December of 2023.

"White Christmas" was a 1942 Christmas standard written by Irving Berlin. It was Bing Crosby's signature tune and sold over 100 million records making it the biggest-selling single of the 20th century. Christmas songs were not as popular in the early 21st century, but Eric Clapton revived the genre with a rockier and bluesy version of this song in 2018.

"Blue Christmas" was a 1948 song written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson which Elvis Presley recorded with the Jordanaires in 1957. It was not released as a single then, but as part of his LP "Elvis' Christmas Album". In 1964 It was released as a single in the UK where it reached number eleven on the UK Singles Chart. It first charted in 2019 on the US Billboard Hot 100 for the first time.

John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir recorded their Christmas song "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" in 1971 but its release was delayed until November 1972 before being released as a single in the UK where it reached number four in the UK Singles chart. The song is an anti-Vietnam War protest song and was voted tenth on the 2012 television special "The Nation's Favourite Christmas Song". "Give Peace a Chance" is not a Christmas song but is an anti-war song written by John Lennon and released as a single in July 1969 by the Plastic Ono Band on Apple Records, while John Lennon was still part of the Beatles, It reached number two on the British singles chart and number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100.

American singer Jimmy Boyd recorded "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" in 1952 when he was 13. The song has been covered by many artists with The Ronettes' (1963) and the Jackson 5's (1970) versions being the most famous.

"Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" was written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector for Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes. Ms Love then recorded the song. It became an enduring success over time and is Ms Love's signature tune. She sang the song each year on the last pre-Christmas episode of "Late Night with David Letterman" (1986-92) and "Late Show with David Letterman" (1993-2006, 2008-2014). Mariah Carey also recorded a successful version of the song (Aha!).

"Driving Home for Christmas" was a 1986 minor Christmas hit for Chris Rea. It was written in his car driving home for Christmas on snowy roads in England. It re-charted in the UK every Christmas from 2007-2020.

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" was first released in 1994 by Maria Carey who was very business savvy as well as a talented singer. The song had all the makings of a chart-topper: a love song with bells and Christmas references by an artist who knew her market. However, it did not reach the Billboard Hot 100 number one position until 2018, making it the song that took longest to reach the coveted hot spot in 25 years.

Donald Gardner wrote "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" while teaching music at public schools in New York State in 1944. He asked his second-grade class what they wanted for Christmas, but noticed that many of the students had at least one front tooth missing so they lisped when answering. He wrote the song in 30 minutes. It was originally recorded by Spike Jones and His City Slickers in December 1947. It went to number one on the Billboard number-one singles chart in January 1948 and again in 1949. It has been covered by many artists including Alvin and the Chipmunks.

"Merry Christmas, Baby" was written by Lou Baxter and Johnny Moore and was first released by Johnny Moore's Three Blazers in 1947 where it was a modest hit. Many performers have recorded versions of this song, including Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, Otis Redding, B.B. King and Elvis Presley. Otis Redding recorded a particular soulful version in 1968 (released posthumously) as a Christmas single (backed with "White Christmas").

"Jingle Bells" was written in 1850 by James Lord Pierpont from Massachusetts, but was published under the title "The One Horse Open Sleigh" in 1857. It was originally written to be sung by a Sunday school choir for Thanksgiving and has no connection to Christmas. One of the most covered songs of all time, Michael Buble and the Puppini Sisters recorded a jazz version in 2011 for his "Christmas" album. The subsequent video shot the Puppini Sisters to fame as they modelled themselves on the Andrews Sisters of the 40s.

"Jingle Bell Rock" was written by Joseph Carleton Beal (1900-1967) and James Ross Boothe (1917-1976) for American singer Bobby Helms. However, the singer disputed this saying the song given was "Jingle Bells Hop" and the final song was a complete rewrite. Helms never received a writing credit or any royalties. The song is rolled out every Christmas and in 2016 it charted for the first time on the Billboard Hot 100. It charted again in 2017 and 2019. On the latter occasion, it reached number eight making Helms' song break the record for the longest wait to the Hot 100's top ten as he achieved this in 60 years four months after his first entry in 1958.

Slade was at the peak of their glam rock career in 1973 after they had two UK singles charts number ones that year. Their manager coaxed them into recording what they considered to be a novelty song, "Merry Christmas, Everybody" after they recorded it. It was a hit and has been covered many times, However, lead singer and songwriter Noddy Holder stated in 2015 that the song was his pension scheme as it earned him over 500,000 pounds in royalties per year.

"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" appeared on Rod Stewart's 2012 platinum Christmas album "Merry Christmas Baby". It features Ella Fitzgerald and Chris Botti. This song has been covered many, many times. Margaret Whiting first recorded the song in 1947 after it was written by Frank Loesser in the same year. It first charted for The Orioles, in 1949. Playing the song only in December used to annoy the writer as the song is not about the holidays but about making a long-term but rash commitment to the future.
