Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dem Meeses get everywhere. Which cartoon character is the best friend of that famous moose, Bullwinkle?

Answer: Rocket J. Squirrel

Quick bio on Rocky and Bullwinkle for the deprived: Rocky is a grey brainy, flying squirrel (with a grey nose NOT black) who lives with his best friend Bullwinkle in Frostbite Falls, Minnesota. Rocky is the brains in the magnificent duo, can fly with a little assistance from Bullwinkle and never goes anywhere without his cap and goggles. Our beloved moose Bullwinkle is dim. BUT, he is also lucky. Bullwinkle's full name is Bullwinkle J. Moose and he is currently President of Monnsylvania too.

He collects box tops, is an avid birdwatcher, has the mark of Rue Brittania on his foot, and is known for being the stupidest in America. Our perpetually naked friend is brown and fuzzy and wears a size 22 shoe.

The Rocky and Bullwinkle show ran from 1959 until 1964.
2. Toronto, Ontario, Canada recently displayed a herd of life-size fibreglass moose placed through out the City, thanks to the City's slightly bizarre mayor. From what North American city did Toronto's mayor get his idea for the moose, because of fibreglass cows exhibited in the other city?

Answer: Chicago

Chicago was inundated with fibreglass cows between June 15 and October 31, 1999 as an art exhibit. Hundreds of cows were placede through the streets of Chicago. The life-size bovines were works of art that were painted, pomaded and all dressed up for the city by Chicago artists, architects, photographers and designers, including several celebrities. Chicago's 1999 summer public art display was originally conceived by Beat Seeberger-Quin and presented in Zurich, Switzerland, during the summer of 1998.

In Toronto, Mayor Mel Lastman has placed the moose in hundreds of locations throughout the City. The moose are individually sponsored by corporations and government agencies. The moose located at Bay and Bloor streets, even has a laminated picture of Bullwinkle on it..
3. What is the Latin and biological name for Moose?

Answer: Alces alces

Alces alces is the largest member of the deer family, Cervidae (order Artiodactyla). It is common in North America, and goes by the name elk in Europe. Moose stand 1.5-2 m (5-6.5 feet) tall on average up to the shoulder and weigh approximately 820 kg (1,800 pounds).

The brown coat is coarse and shaggy. The male has enormous antlers and is called a Bull. Moose inhabit the northern parts of North America and Eurasia and prefer being near water, as they often feed on submerged aquatic plants. They also eat a variety of grasses, herbs, and bark. Usually solitary, moose in North America often assemble in small bands in winter and tramp the snow firm in a small area to form a 'moose yard.' Moose are usually shy, but they tend to be aggressive when disturbed. Moose are generally hunted both for trophies and meat, in fact unrestricted hunting has virtually eliminated them from the southern parts of their range, especially in the United States.

They are now generally protected by law, both in North America and in Europe, and hunting is closely controlled.

The Moschinae, by the way, is the Musk Deer.
4. Which U.S. President formed the 'Bull-Moose Party'?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

The Bull Moose Party actually originated as the Progressive Party, a U.S. dissident political faction that nominated former president Theodore Roosevelt for the presidency in 1912. The Party was formed when Roosevelt was denied the Republican Party nomination for that year and opposed the entrenched conservatism of the regular Republican Party, controlled by Pres. William Howard Taft.

The National Republican Progressive League was organized in 1911 by Sen. Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin, then became the Progressive Party the following year.

The party's popular nickname of Bull Moose was derived from the characteristics of strength and vigour often used by Roosevelt to describe himself. The Bull Moose ticket polled some 25 percent of the popular vote, causing a split vote and giving the election to the Democrats under Woodrow Wilson.

The Bull Moose Party evaporated and the Republicans were reunited four years later. When asked how he was doing, Roosevelt had the habit of saying 'I feel as strong as a bull moose'.
5. Which of the following are the traditional arch-enemies of Bullwinkle and his friend?

Answer: Boris Badenov, Natasha Fatale

Boris and Natasha are from Pottsylvania, where they plan all sorts of evil for the world.
6. What was the name of the 'moose' from Archie comics?

Answer: Big Moose

In the Archie and Friends comic series that has been popular in the United States for oh so long, Moose (called 'Big Moose' by the gang) is a tall, muscular athlete, who is also the very jealous boyfriend of Midge. He is a good guy with a small brain.

He is always catching guys looking or talking to Midge, especially Reggie, and beats them up. Due to his amazing stupidity, however, he is often easily tricked, especially by Reggie. His favorite saying is 'd-uh' which is usually all he has to say. Moose is best friends with Dilton Doiley, the brainiest guy in school and the smallest, the classic brains and brawn duo.
7. The popular Canadian beer Moosehead ran a successful advertising campaign in the 1970's with what landmark slogan?

Answer: The Moose is Loose

Moosehead beer is a Canadian invention, but is not generally that popular north of the 49th parallel. This may have something to do with the fact that it usually comes in green bottles, which has the effect of making the beer brackish. In the 1970's Moosehead began an advertising campaign with the slogan 'The Moose is loose' in the United States and one decade later it had become the fourth largest beer import in the United States.

It is a clear lager beer, brewed in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada by the Oland family.

It's heritage reaches back to 1867, making it the oldest independent brewery in Canada and it is also the third largest brewery in Canada.
8. Where is the City of Moose Jaw?

Answer: Saskatchewan

Moose Jaw is a city in south-central Saskatchewan, Canada. It lies along the Moose Jaw River and the Trans-Canada Highway, about 44 miles west of Regina. Its name is purported to derive from an Indian source that refers to the contours of the river, which resemble the jawbone of a moose. Founded in 1882 with the arrival of the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the settlement grew as a rail terminus and distribution centre for a large wheat-growing area.

The city is now one of the most industrialized in Saskatchewan, with major oil refineries, a sheet steel mill, flour-milling operations, large grain-storage facilities and extensive stockyards. The city's annual International Band Festival in May is one of the biggest events of its kind.

In 1884 it was only a town, but was renamed as a cityin 1903. The population in the metroploitan area was 36,552 as of 1991.
9. Which baseball team has a moose as its mascot?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

Officially called 'Mariner Moose', this mascot was created in 1990 and became the Mariner's first and still standing team mascot. The idea was chosen from over 2,500 submissions made by children 14 or under on the West coast. The kid who came up with the idea gave his reason fro choosing a moose as: 'I chose the Moose because they are funny, neat and friendly.

The Moose would show that the Mariners enjoy playing and that they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. It shows they're having fun no matter what the situation.' Yep, them Mariners, such a funny bunch of guys, eh?
10. The Moose is the official animal of which state or province?

Answer: Maine

Don't ask me why, but Maine is the state with the moose as its state animal. Maine is one of the oldest state in the United States (Maine claims America's first chartered city: York, 1641). It has 5,500 miles of coastline, is about 320 miles long and 210 miles wide, with a total area of 33,215 square miles or about as big as all of the other five New England States combined.

It's comprised of 16 counties with 22 cities, 435 towns, 33 plantations, 424 unorganized townships and 3 Indian reservations. Maine abounds in natural assets, state and national parks, the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, the Acadia National Park (one of the top ten most visited national parks in the United States), and Baxter State Park (location of Mt. Katahdin 5,268ft and the northern end of the Appalachian Trail).
