Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS: Which of these is NOT a breed of cat?

Answer: Bearcat

A bearcat also known as a binturong is part of the viverridae family of mammals. They are found in Southern Asia and they are declining in population making them a vulnerable species.

Bearcats are long, heavy animals with thick black hairs. Their tails curl upwards. They have a pointed muzzle which is rather short and points it upward. They have large black eyes. Their feet have five toes with sharp claws.
2. BRAIN TEASER: Fractured Cat: Some all ye kit

Answer: Somali cat

The Somali cats are similar to the Abyssinian cats. However, unlike Abyssinians, they have beautiful long-haired coats. In 1979, the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) officially recognized the breed in North America, and in 1982, they were recognized in Europe.

Evelyn Mague named them Somali in reference to Somalia which is on the border of Abyssinia (now Ethiopia).
3. CELEBRITIES: Which of these movies did Kitty Carlisle star in with the Marx Brothers?

Answer: A Night at the Opera

"A Night at the Opera" (1935) co-stars Kitty Carlisle as Rosa Castaldi. Rosa is dating Lassparri (Walter Woolf King); however, Ricardo Baroni (Allen Jones), one of the lead singers of the chorus in the opera, has hired his best friend Fiorello (Chico Marx) to be the manager. Fiorello is also in love with Rosa.
4. ENTERTAINMENT: What other name does Kitty Pryde go by?

Answer: Kate

Katherine Anne "Kitty" Pryde is one of the Marvel X-Men comic characters. She first appeared in "The Uncanny" in January 1980. She is a human mutant and can pass through solid objects and levitate. She also goes by the alias 'Shadowcat'.
5. FOR CHILDREN: In Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat," why didn't the children go out to play?

Answer: It was too wet to play.

The very first line of the book states, "The sun did not shine, it was too wet to play." The picture then shows Sally and her brother watching out the window as it rains. The brother is the narrator of the story. He is unnamed in the book. In the 2003 movie with Mike Myers, he is named Connor, but that is a writer's license the screenplay writers took for that movie.
6. GENERAL: Black cats as bad luck is a universal superstition.

Answer: False

According to the History Channel website, there is a link between witches (that is, those who practice the religion of Wicca) and cats, especially in the 1600s when the witch hunts were happening. In particular, these witches often had as pets black cats, so the Catholic Church at the time claimed that black cats were linked to Satan. No one associated with the Church wanted to be connected to Satan, so black cats came to be linked with bad luck.

However, at least today, this belief that black cats bring bad luck is not universal.

For example, a fisherman's wife will keep a black cat in Britain in the belief it will bring their husband home safely. In southern France, black cats will be well-fed because it is believed that doing so will bring the one who feeds the cat good luck.

If a director sees a black cat in the theatre on opening night, it is better than any broken leg. A black cat will ensure your show is a success!
7. GEOGRAPHY: Where in North Carolina did the Wright Brothers first fly from on December 17, 1903?

Answer: Kitty Hawk

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina is located in Dare County. It was made famous when Orville and Wilbur Wright flew their airplane from nearby Kill Devil Hills. However, at that time Kill Devil Hills was unnamed, so Kitty Hawk was the closest place with a name.

Kitty Hawk is seven feet above sea level.
8. HISTORY: On what continents were cats first domesticated?

Answer: Africa/Asia

Cats were considered to be first domesticated in Egypt. Some scientists had claimed that the leopard had perhaps been domesticated for a short time in China, but since it was not permanent, most do not count that as the first domesticated cat. Also, not enough scientists found evidence to support that claim.
9. HOBBIES: If you and your friend want to play a game of cat's cradle, which of these items will you need?

Answer: string

Cat's cradle requires a piece of string tied so that it makes a big loop. Then it is woven amongst the four hands of the two players to create different string designs. It goes back to at least 1768 when Abraham Tucker references it in "The Light of Nature." Tucker was a philosopher, and this was his great work, (originally a three-volume piece of literature).

According to the Internet, the game can be played with more people in a more complex version.

The game goes until a player makes a mistake, or until something is created and no one can go any further. Often this happens with one called "Pinkies." More experienced players can get past the "Pinkies," but most will get stuck at this point and end the game.
10. HUMANITIES: In Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "Cats," what is the name of "railway cat"?

Answer: Skimbleshanks

"Cats" is based on a book of poems by T.S. Eliot called "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." The music was composed by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Skimbleshanks is an orange tabby cat with a lot of energy. He lives and works down by the railway trains. In 1981, Kenn Wells originated the role on the West End.
11. LITERATURE: In the Scottish play, (or if you prefer, "Macbeth"), what is the name of the cat?

Answer: Grimalkin

Grimalkin is an archaic term that means cat. In the very opening of the play, the three witches are on the stage. The First Witch says, "I come, Grimalkin." (There are different ways to spell the word). She is responding to her cat, which is her familiar.

A familiar is a spirit (often in animal form) that is there to look after a human. So the cat is not seen on the stage, only mentioned by name.
12. MOVIES: In the film "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1958), who was the "cat"?

Answer: Maggie

"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" was originally a play by Tennesse Williams. In 1958, it was adapted into a film directed by Richard Brooks, who also co-wrote the screenplay with James Poe. The film starred Elizabeth Taylor as Maggie, Paul Newman as Brick, Burl Ives as Big Daddy, and Judith Anderson as Big Mama.

Brick is an alcoholic, former football player who is stuck trying to relive those glory days that are long gone. He and Maggie go to celebrate Big Daddy's 65th birthday. Big Daddy is Brick's father, and Maggie is Brick's wife. Big Daddy says he is not dying from cancer as was originally believed. However, the doctor informs Brick and Brick's brother, Gooper (Jack Carson), that Big Daddy is dying, most likely within the year. They decide not to tell Big Daddy.

Brick tells Maggie later, and she is upset by the news. Brick has no interest in his father, but Maggie wants him to take an interest. Later, at the party, his dad confronts Brick about his drinking. Maggie tells Big Daddy about Brick's best friend Skipper, from football, who had committed suicide years ago. She was jealous of Skipper getting Brick's time and decided to seduce Skipper to make Brick jealous. But things went wrong and Brick blamed her. Now, he blames himself for Skipper's death.

During the argument, Brick slips and tells his father about the cancer. From there, everything falls apart. Maggie then lies about being pregnant, but later she and Brick try to make the lie true.

So, they changed the name but kept Cat in the name so the people who came would recognize they were the same group. The band name was used in the movie "That'll Be the Day" (1973) and its 1974 sequel, "Stardust."
